I'd recommend getting the feathers that are more boa-like, something that has some volume and tease to it, if that makes sense.

Like in this picture. It's a feather shape but has a texture like a fluffy boa. If you used a lot of these with various lengths it would get the feather look without being so costumey as a boa. I have seen boas used for the Pirate England, but it looks weird to me and it's very obviously a boa shape and texture when you see it.

I guess the feather is more authentic in my mind.

Aw man, that reminds me. Last year at Sakuracon, I came across a dude cosplaying America. He had gotten glomped (bullshit he was totally attacked) by some weeby fangirls who tore a hole in his pants, so he had to get them mended. When he showed up later to the Hetalia shoot, he got a round of applause and fangirl shrieks.

I'm surprised whenever I find guys in the Hetalia fandom, considering how rabid it is.

Good example of a difficult, complex cosplay gone wrong. Sadly this isn't worth $400 since there's costume satin and bad raschel lace. The fabric does have detail, but it looks like the shiny brocade they sell at JoAnn's. A nice effort, but not all complex historical costumes turn out okay. I think they fail even harder because you realize how much time and money went into making something that still looks cheap.

But that lace... please, please, never raschel lace. You don't have to get the $10 a yard lace, just good cotton lace or spring for some venice lace maybe!

You think it's going to jumpstart the fandom again? Maybe we get a new generation of younger fans discovering it, but I'm not sure it will be as big again.

I don't think you have to have seen seasons 1-4 to understand season 5, but prior knowledge of the series (and characters) is going to be something I'd think you'd need to get into it. Maybe with season 5 having such drastically different artwork though. I don't think Hetalia is something you have to watch or read sequentially per se, but I don't think you can just jump in without getting briefed on the concept and world verse.

You're more likely to get renewed enthusiasm, in my opinion, from fans who haven't been active as much or semi-left the fandom.

Belgium-anon here. No, a girl with autism wanted to use my wig at the photoshoot and pulled it out of the bag really rough. She was a friend of friends so I didn't blow up at her. I would've felt bad, you know? It's also a human hair wig so it's super easy to fix and style.

I actually found some non-photoshoot pictures of my outfit when the wig wasn't screwed up. It's still not the best (seriously) and the background is shit but it's the best one I have.

Yeah, Pirate cosplays need to be made with either felted wool, which is more historically accurate, or you can go the luxurious route with silks and velvets. Even polyester faux dupioni like they have at JoAnns is better than shiny brocade. Also, you need to mix fabrics. If it's all the same texture, it looks off. Having a good mixture of textures, slight prints, colors is what really makes something come to life and look authentic. These outfits weren't costumes to the people wearing them in those time periods. And it wasn't always all one outfit made to be that one outfit, it was pieces coordinated together. Learning which fabrics to use and how to interplay and coordinate fabric textures is probably, for me, one of the biggest factors that separates a good cosplayer from a bad one.

And the more embellishments and lace seriously don't make it better. When done right, it's 10xs more awesome. When done wrong... it's so, so, so bad. I don't like seeing shitty cosplays, but I'll take a dozen bad uniforms over this sad monstrosity.

Yeah, totally not worth $400. I wonder how much she spent making it, though.

Your post reminds me of when people do Amano-style Final Fantasy cosplays. YES his illustrations are a little odd and overly ornate, but it doesn't translate into making costumes out of every little bit of notions, lace, feathers, beads, sparkly things, fringe, sequins, etc.

I've seen some really dead-on, amazingly detailed "Amanoized" cosplays, and then I've seen some that look like they simply covered themselves in glue and rolled around the embellishments aisle at the craft store.

Manga artists are notorious for having such strict deadlines they don't have much free time. He talked to us a few months ago, we got a hello, and we got birz comics, and the information that Sealand's character song was written entirely by him.

It started as a webcomic, it doesn't mean it has to stay that way. It's expanded from that, obviously, with the volumes, the anime, and the comic strips in magazines.
I haven't been on LJ in a while, so I don't know if it's still up. He's still into this, obviously, and the last message was just an average blog update, answering questions, submitting photos, giving drawings. He's just been busy.
And people keep trying to say he isn't making new characters, but sometimes new ones appear on his blog, and he'd been teasing Luxembourg and an either Spanish or Portuguese-speaking country in the events he'd had last year.

My main issue with the blog not updating so much is just because that's how Hetalia was distributed for most of it's fandom life. Yes, I understand Himaruya is busy with other projects, but a lot of the content in the mangas was also blog updates. I guess now that's just been moved over to the magazine stuff, but there doesn't seem to have been the extras and events that really used to enrich the fandom (and give us more awesome outfits to choose from).

Maybe I should just keep up with the manga from the magazine, but I have to agree with other comments. We expect the blog to be active since Hetalia was a webcomic and has a strong web presence. Black Butler wasn't ever a webcomic, so things on Toboso's are bonuses, not the primary way we get the actual content of the series. Also, Hetalia is a 4-koma style comic save for a few more traditional pages, and lends itself to easy digital distribution. Toboso draws a traditional manga format, she isn't going to be putting up pages.

The lj is still up and running, but it's hardly as large as it used to be. There aren't nearly as many posts and some characters barely even get a birthday mention or fan post with art or fic. But also, there haven't been blog updates so fandom hasn't had that and the anime has been over. Now that it's back maybe the lj com will stir to life again. It's still there, just not as active and feverish as it was at its height. I would still say it's a good source for the fandom. But I remember when I first saw all the 2P stuff and I went on the lj to try and figure out what it was. There weren't any posts mentioning it and so I did some googling and found it on tumblr. I just kinda expected what is now such a big thing in Hetalia cosplay to have been mentioned on the lj since it has canonical beginnings, if I'm right (I still don't fully understand 2P stuff, it just seems like Tumblr bs to me).

Anyway. Yeah, 2P was something Hima created during one of the events. Someone named Beek(their url is like, beekwhy or beek-why or something, on tumblr)took the nyotalia designs and flipped them to created the non-nyo FACE characters as 2P, and got treated like a god. Even though they were just shitty genderbents, not even anything creative. It mostly stays to tumblr, though, thank god.

That is the whole reason why Homestuck is the new ultimate huge fandom. Wecomic, easy to find, easy to read, done.
That's why Hetalia was huge back then and not so much anymore. Now if you want to read the comics he posts on the god forsaken magazine, you have to wait and expect someone bought it on japan, scanned it and translated it. And to be honest, I haven't seen anyone do that.
There's the new volume, but to be honest, I couldn't even find and read the whole volume. Saw some lose pages on tumblr.
It makes me sad.

It's been more about what the countries are like now and having them do random things instead of focusing it around WWII, like it was before.
They never said directly what happens, though, but there was an ex-micronation that the other micronations met, that was a normal human. So it's kind of made people been led to believe that after you have nothing to represent, you turn back into a human.

Not really? Hima threw a couple of cute events for Halloween and Christmas but he ended up disappearing for a year straight with no word so the fans were a little worried. He was just super sick and really busy working on other projects. There was a subtle hint of HRE possibly being Germany but it could of been a bad translation.

The fans have just kind of stuck with it as others moved on to Homestuck but with the new anime out done more so in the style of the manga and Hima doing a few more updates and releasing the new volume, the Hetalia lovers are coming back with happiness and slight nostalgia. I hope a lot of new merchandise comes with the new season, personally.

I really love Hetalia and I hope there is more to come and I hope he expands more on the possible two new Nations, Czechoslovakia and Luxembourg.

That being said, would it be good to start up some Hetalia fanart and goods again for Artist Alley this year? I had some Mochi charms for the past couple of years but no one really knew who or what they were.

Maybe because it was Mochi? Most 'Hetalia fans' at cons aren't going to be as hardcore to know about the mochi characters. They weren't in the anime right? If it's not in the anime, most people who come by probably won't get it. If you stick to Axis and Allies characters + the ones who get lumped in with them (Prussia, Canada, etc). you'll probably get some business. You'll always get someone who wants a character like Poland or Sweden, but in terms of getting more business, Axis and Allies are probably your best bet. I'd also stick to their usual forms. Nyotalia and 2P might be hot among tumblr Hetalia fans, but they'll probably still buy a uniform version and you're more likely to attract casual fans that way, too.

But have Hetalia goods not been selling for you? Even if fandom has died down it's still pretty big. I went to a small local con this weekend and Homestuck was the biggest, but Hetalia was actually #2 (or maybe even tied). There was MLP, but it wasn't nearly as large as I expected.

So it kinda boosted my spirits that there was so much Hetalia cosplay, unfortunately it was mostly Shittalia. They were enthusiastic, and you could tell they loved the series and tried, but it wasn't stellar. Too much nyotalia and 2P, which I still feel is an excuse to not crossplay and not wear a wig and do closet cosplay.

Never have I seen so many "braided ahoges" in my life.

It's been active at least since late 2008 which is when I remember discovering Hetalia... so when exactly did you get into and then exit Hetalia fandom if you didn't know about the lj com?

Not related to hetalia specific idiots, but I was at a small con this weekend and there was an anime jeopardy panel. One of the "name that tune" questions was the Hetalia OP. They say the name of the anime in the freaking song and none of the panelists got it. It freaking says "Hetalia" twice. And no one got it. These contestants... faith in humanity was gone. They couldn't even get basic Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Yu-gi-oh, Pokemon questions correct or even answered at all. There were series I don't even watch/read that I still knew answers to.

When you go to an anime con and no one playing anime jeopardy can get a pokemon question right... you know they weren't even born when that game came out.

We probably get four or five asks a month (we're not a super big blog, mind you) asking if closet cosplay is okay. I think my favorite ask we've gotten before was asking if it was okay that the person in question had long, straight brown hair and no costume at all (plus couldn't wear contacts for some undisclosed reason) and wanted to apparently cosplay Prussia.

I just remember sitting there staring at the ask like--no one is going to know who the hell you are but even if I tell you that, it's really not going to stop you from showing up at a meet or a con and claiming to be Prussia.

The other admin and I have essentially given up. People are just looking for a seal of approval on things that they're going to do regardless of what we tell them. I personally love when people submit photos of themselves to us expecting us to post them, with them just in a t-shirt and a wig. We honestly try to post quality cosplayers, which is why we post very infrequently.

Here's a fun story: This girl submitted her friend to us after we asked for Latvia submissions. Her friend's costume wasn't amazing, although it wasn't the worst we have ever seen. But her friend included this long message of why this girl should be posted, about how the girl in question had hand-stitched her costume, put a lot of work into it, etc etc, and deserved to be on our blog. The costume was unlined, made out of Jo-Ann's fabric, had loose hems everywhere, and just wasn't great. But the friend kept insisting, saying it would boost her friend's confidence, and that while she knew it wasn't the best costume ever, we /had/ to post it.

We got so frustrated that we did post it, with a note saying the things we would fix. I kind of felt bad for the girl in question because she hadn't submitted herself and she was the one who ended up having to deal with our frustration and criticisms.

Great Cosplay is another good general cosplay tumblr, they generally do have "great cosplay" though sometimes I'm left scratching my head. Most of the Hetalia stuff they have posted seems of a good quality.

I've actually said this once before a long time ago in a bad cosplay thread but the thread 404'd immediately after so I doubt anyone actually saw it. Just wanted to get this out there to a Hetalia crowd.

The cosplay (I don't know if there are other mpreg England cosplays around? It was the one with a France in it as well) was actually a dare-slash-joke. In short, I bought a mochi plush in the artist alley and a few friends of ours up in the hotel room wanted to see if it fit under my cosplay when I was undressing. When it did they thought it would be hilarious if we went back downstairs like that 'because you two are like, supposed to be cosplaying a couple right?' so we did walk around like that for a day.

I'm fully aware the cosplays sucked even without the mochi, so if you wanna post it to cite it as 'what not to do' or just to laugh at then by all means. I still laugh about that godawful wig to this day and I'm happy we've both advanced as cosplayers. Just making it clear that while it was an awful cosplay and a bad joke, it was just that -- a joke. None of us were taking it seriously. So it doesn't need to be cited as yet another reason to think the fandom is overflowing with disgusting weebs. Hopefully a little bit of faith in the fandom can be restored?

And this is my personal belief on Hetalia fandom... if the reputation drives you away, then were you really that much of a fan?
