hey guys, damaramegido here. someone pointed out the last thread to me and i thought i should at least reply. thank you to the anons who showed concern- that's really sweet of you.
it's true that i am on a pretty heavy hiatus right now and my blog is blanked out at the moment. i suffer from depression and have had a pretty rough relapse lately. it's not something i want to put on other people's shoulders so i didn't want to make a big deal out of it. i hiatused my blog because for me, eliminating distractions is one of the ways i deal with it.
i'm not sure when i'll be back, but i'm getting better and i'm sorry if i worried anyone. anyway, just thought i'd drop this off for the curious. hope you lovely folk are having a better start to 2013 than mine!

I feel it would be rude if I went and showed this to the cosplayers, yes. However, this is like saying everyone in the Photoshop threads on CGL is rude (which may be your opinion if you've seen them before).

I like seeing before and after pictures, and so do other people. I have never sought out the cosplayers in the photos I photoshop and rubbed it in their face or said they need to change.

That's cool that you find it rude, but I'm not going to stop, and neither am I going to make them aware of what I did or post it outside of CGL.

Am I the only one who'd love to see someone with special effects makeup experience do something awesome with a Homestuck design?

I think it would be really cool for someone to do a troll with crazy makeup to make them resemble an animal or beast. Like Terezi made to look like a dragon, sort of in the style of pic related.

i did a terezi/dragon thing for a ren-faire i went to, i made metalic scales out of false nails and put them on joint areas (like my shoulders) in a gradient and used the fishnet trick for more scales, i also put on claws, ill have to see if i can find a picture of it i had big red wings as well..

I know nothing about this girl but as someone who has struggled with anxiety throughout my entire life, that is very frustrating to read. If it is severe enough to the point where she gets upset for several hours after seeing a negative comment she needs to remove herself from the situation if she wants to get better.

You shouldn't post photos of yourself online if you are unprepared for feedback (both negative and positive). Any self respecting therapist would tell her this.

The whole "Don't be mean to me it hurts my health and confidence" bothers me since she is opening herself up to the hatred. Agreeing in re-stylng the wig. I know it's daunting to style, but I would suggest making the curl larger. Also, it flips downwards instead up upwards. Just pin it as such and spray it fucking hardcore.

Plum lipstick (black is hard to pull off), and a blacker than black eyeliner in your upper lid with either more mascara/fake lashes.

I see you have eyeliner on already, but it looks lke the smudgey lighter kohl type. I'd say go with a pen-tip liquid eyeliner. If you're confident enough, a smokey eye look would work well too.

I really like the flip and length of the wig and looks forward to seeing your final photos!

Okay, question about people with an astigmatism.

If you have it in one or both eyes, can you wear regular contacts cosmetically? Or will it be uncomfortable/damaging to your eye.

I thought toric lenses were used to correct the astigmatism, but since some people don't have it that bad could they cosmetically use a non-toric one?

I also have anxiety/depression issues, and I agree so much. Tumblr is a horrible place for coping with mental health problems, as the culture there is pretty fucking disgusting. Nothing makes me more uncomfortable than the way tumblr's developed a culture of oversharing, where describing every little detail about yourself/your problems is considered okay. I have astigmatism in one eye, and to be honest, a few hours worth of wearing non-toric lenses won't be too bad. My eye starts to feel a little thick and kind of sore after about eight hours, so that's a full con day, but I can wear them the whole weekend if I wear glasses for the next few days and give my eyes a break. That's just my experience though.

it would simply be uncomfortable- an astigmatism means your eye is shaped slightly differently, so a regular contact would be irritating.
On a further note, at the whole editing eyes things, I think it's ok in some situations. I'm unable to wear colored contacts at all because my prescription is so high/having an astigmatism and so I can see people in similar situations wanting to edit their eyes. However, I think it's best to avoid editing in general, and just cosplay character with shades/ same eye color as you if you are really that annoyed by the eye color.

Please get rid of the red lipstck and go with something softer. It looks like you smeared it on in photos, even though it's applied pretty neatly. It's to bright and doesn't really match, I'd say use a pink lipstick, or a red tint thats not as bright.

I'm not ashamed of my anxiety issues but they aren't something I want to broadcast, it's embarrassing getting that upset over things and it isn't something I want to share with the internet. Buy your suit from where ever you may, then go down to the fabric store and pick up some black fabric of the same material. Put it on you, mark where you want the eyes to be, cut black fabric, then hand stitch it on!
Fabric paint could also be an alternative, but y' gotta be clean with it.
You could also just glue the black fabric on, but I really wouldn't suggest it.

Ben Nye makes a zombie white product that's really more of a heavy powder foundation than a facepaint, it won't get you a pure smooth white but will definitely lighten you up past natural if you really can't use paint for some reason

It depends on how severe your astigmatism is - if your curve isn't too bad, you can wear regular contacts although you shouldn't wear them for as long because the differencial in pressure can be bad for the oxygen flow of your eyes. I wear torics normally and have a few pair of circles that I use for costuming

I just feel a mild discomfort since the contact doesn't take to my eye shape as well. But if I do wear contacts for too long my eye starts to feel dry and itchy and I'll usually have to take them out after a couple of hours.

Keep them calm, at first let them know who's running it, and lay down rules. Normally just telling them to mind themselves, to keep it PG-13 for younger children and other con goers, as well as don't touch without consent. To keep the shoot running smoothly, you can limit each shot to 10-15 seconds, then move onto the next. Other than that you really should be fine, 10-20 people isn't too hard to handle.

I would definitely talk to an eye doctor if you were considering them. Astigmatism and other eyes issues are common in my family, and I know it can be pretty complicated depending on how your eyes work. (I'm the only one with relatively sane eyes, so I don't know the specifics, other than overhearing my sister's hysterical dramatics at the eyedoctor.)

Though a quick Google'ing is bringing up results for colored toric lenses. They're all more "mundane" ones that will require a doctor's approval, but if you have any suspicion of potential problems, it's a really good idea to verify things with a professional.

That seems to go over the basics pretty well!

Though I'd really stress that you should be prepared to handle more people than your intended number. Even if you make a post on Tumblr, or even an event on Facebook, it's hard to get a good estimate of people, and there will always be those who wander in randomly. Homestuck is one of the biggest fandoms at the moment, so you should be scoping out the biggest area at the con to gather in.

It might also be in your interest to find some trustworthy people to help you. And your meet-up "leaders" should be easily recognizable. Anyone is cosplaying a popular character, you're going to need to stand out as authority. Even if it's a small group, getting everyone's attention is going to be tough, and just saying "listen to the Dave and Karkat" isn't going to work when there's five duplicates of each.

And to contribute, I had picked up Revlon's Va Va Violet lipstick for my Roxy cosplay (black is too harsh) and...it was not good. I forgot read reviews on it (because I'm allergic to research, I guess) which was a mistake. The lipstick is very sheer and blotchy and it takes more than a few swipes to get the actual color. And unless you exfoliate the shit out of your lips, it's only going to look worse. And I'm not a make-up wizard, so I won't be using it (so disappointing!) That's just my experience with it, so take it with a grain of salt.

BUT, and I don't know if anyone else has posted this already but here's a tutorial where a woman used a recipe with Crayola crayons to make lipstick! I don't know if it actually works because I haven't gotta around to actually trying it yet but it seems like a simple, cheap (and I know a lot of you guys like the word "cheap") and creative way to make your own lipsticks!

The logic behind this video seems a little weird to me? My grandmother- and most of my female family members -has been wearing lipstick pretty much every day of her life, and she hasn't died from lead poisoning or had any problems related to it. Also, if a product is going that close to your skin and mouth, I figure the FDA would be taking extra measures to ensure that there isn't anything in there that is going to kill off a bunch of consumers during prolonged use. Maybe I'm wrong, who knows.

Either way, I use Make Up Forever's satin black lipstick, and while I inevitably have to do touch ups, it has very nice coverage. Another alternative is using an eyebrow pencil, or the black from a makeup color wheel.

Yeah I would just stick to Crayola if you're going to attempt this and NOT cheap crayons, guys. Long story short, I got lead poisoning when I was younger from consuming cheapo dollar store crayons. They are probably more strictly regulated now, but I still would be careful. Whether or not lead in crayons used as lipstick would be enough to GIVE you poisoning, I don't know. But its worth throwing this out there

I plan on cosplaying Fem! Eridan soon, and I'm planning on wearing a pencil skirt with blue and black stripes. I don't want to look for one, so I plan on modifying a plain colored skirt.

I'm wondering about a couple things. One, should I buy a black skirt and add blue stripes or a blue skirt and add black stripes? Which one would be easier? And two, what would be the best way to add stripes onto the fabric?

It would most likely be easier to buy a blue skirt and add the black stripes yourself.
If you're going with the painting route, tape off the stripes and then paint the gaps, wait for it to dry, and then gently remove the tape. It'll give you clean lines but be careful to make them straight and even.

Hey, guys. I need your opinions on this. I've been tempted to write up "A Beginner's Guide to HSG on /cgl/" to post on tumblr. Basically a list of big do's and do not's on this thread, and possibly other threads. I don't like this idea for two reasons, the first being that making this site easier to use for beginners invites more normalfaggotry, but mainly, becuase you should learn how to use this site by lurking and becoming acclimated to its culture naturally, instead of reading a guide to use it. The unstained gremlins have teeth that are a little bit thinner, with a sharper, tapered edge that slightly curves. The teeth on the Grell veneer are wider and more triangular, with an even point like typical stylized shark teeth. Pic in this post is the unstained gremlins.

One more notable difference besides appearance that I forgot to mention is price. The Grells are double the cost of the Gremlins, which is why so few people use them. At that point, it's much more cost effective to make your own with false nails and a molded mouth piece then to shell out all that money.

Gremlins look more organic; better spacing, slight curve, more triangular and less pentagonal than the Grells, which are designed to look like the kind of straight-up zigzag pointy teeth.

IMO Grells are canonically closer to Terezi, but I like the aesthetics of the Gremlins better.

As for teeth and protruding lips: kind of. On cosplayers who use DD teeth, protruding lips seem a lot less noticeable when emoting with an open mouth rather than a closed one. People with smaller mouths or smaller teeth may have fit issues with them as well, but I remember one Eridan cosplayer trimming hers to better fit her mouth.

I cosplay Karkat so it's kind of a tough choice for me, he's got similar zigzag teeth but they aren't as emphasized as being a tight pack like Terezis that only the Grell's do justice. I appreciate your input also, thanks.

Not a problem at all! Personally, I really like the look of dental distortion veneers, but I'm hesitant to make a purchase since my experience with fake teeth has usually been that they run too large for my mouth, and DD is a hefty investment to make only to realize when I get them that I can't wear them without looking and sounding ridiculous.

For Karkat, I'd sway more toward the Gremlins. But ultimately, that decision is yours to make!

What's HSG's opinion on matchwigs? I know homestuckcosplay help recommends them but this is my first time cosplaying and I don't want to be another rose with a mediocre wig.

thanks! I found a great wig at a local store for the exact same price that I like better anyway. It has a sewn zigzag part, but from what I can tell it's very high quality.

From what I hear, their caps tend to run on the smaller side. Not an issue if you've got a smaller head, though.
