Why do SAO cosplays always look like shit? It seems like no-one takes their time to actually make the costume look good and just wants attention. Lots of bad/inaccurate wigs, and lots of people not even wearing wigs, awful cardboard swords everywhere, and I'm getting really sick of seeing these shiny fabric chestplates.

To the OP specifically, I think you should consider re-doing your gloves and chestplate. They look really bad right now.

Yeah, I'm that one guy who actually took his damn time on his Kirito... made the coat and undershirt from scratch, lovingly crafted the swords, blah blah blah... Though I need to go back and fix the collar on the coat and take it in at the waist. Armor piece was kind of last-minute craft foam shit though. I'll remake eventually.

It's funny; I was worried about this at first, when I found out there would be three different Viera in the same group. But it ended up not bothering me at all; it was fun just working on our costumes without worrying about coordinating materials or any of that. I see a lot of friendships strained when people spend too much time being perfectionists and trying to coordinate everything, so for a con as small as ALA, it was nice to just relax and work on my own stuff without making sure we all had the same ear templates and materials.
Then again, I was the only one from the first FFTA, so I kind of set sail for fail there. Sage for costume already posted.

Thing is, none of us are particularly close. More acquaintances than anything. So we didn't want anyone being bitter that they didn't get to use whatever material/color scheme/etc. (You can preach all you like about the magic of friendship, but let's face it; people can get mad over the weirdest stuff and you don't want awkward chemistry in a cosplay group.) And besides, it was loads easier this way; for example, the fur for my ears was something I found in a local shop that wasn't at JoAnn or Michael's, and it was what worked best for the red mage's ears. But black-tipped ears would need different materials to look better...anyway, my wordiness aside, it was just more fun to have everyone make things as they wanted to and just hang out in costume. Thanks for the compliments on the hat! It was my second hat; the first one didn't come out how I wanted it to at all. Witch hats are hard the first time around, but now that I have the pattern, I really want to make more!

I hope it's the breastplate that's making you look fat.

If I've learned anything from making Silica cosplay, it's that one should mix at least 3 different textiles into the costume to make it look like a realistic fantasy outfit and emphasis the smallness of the waist as much as possible to balance the breastplate. And heels, sacrificing a tiny bit of accuracy for subtle, 1" heels instead of flats will make the overall presentation look so much better.

speaking of fabrics, I'm doing Asuna and can't decide on what I should use. I went to my local JoAnn's and felt around for what I liked.. and as of right now I like wool suiting for the cape and skirt and the top would be either poplin or the suiting... I'm worried the poplin will be too see-through and not sure if I want to double it, since it will be summer time....
the arms and legs I was thinking of spandex/lycra..
any advice anyone?

This wasn't my most recent cosplay, but it's the most recent one that I actually made. I failed at dyeing the wig since I got it only about a week before the con, so yeah. Inaccurate...

The dress in >>6560690 is about 100% custom, her and her mom did the sewing, and they made snaps for the boots/gloves (the red parts), and her hair is her hair. The boots were actually really hard for her to get, plain white heeled boots were just nowhere to be found when we were planning this for some reason.

Well, I was there when they made it literally the night before the con. The little plush was the only thing she made ahead of time.

Honestly, her boyfriend did most of it. I admit she didn't even attempt the hoop or petticoat, but she did have the shoes. Apparently they were hard to stand in but alright to walk in, and we were standing in line to get an autograph.

(Other Lili here) - I had the same problem with the boots. I was able to find plenty of plain white ones, but they all had platform heels (which is inaccurate) and they were way too expensive. The boots I'm wearing in my picture are temporary and I'm STILL looking for a good pair.
Mine is 100% custom too! It just needs repairs (I'm still a beginner).

I know I am on the large end of the scale unfortunately, although because of my chest size that breast plate wasn't doing the best justice as they were pretty much pushing the rest of the costume wider.
Or I just have no idea how to make armor that fits my torso properly par example my Saber cosplay from the same event (granted all the armor was made in a few days because of procrastination reasons)

I'm not surprised it's popular, but then, you need to look at it's fanbase here. Most are relative casuals flooding in from the Crunchy Roll set.

It's also popular overall (Japan ate it up too) of course, and cosplaying from something big = attention. Even better if you do it during or immediately following the show.

I think it'll be one of those things on par with all the P&S cosplay that sprung up immediately.
