Best DSLR cameras for complete amateurs?

I just want a camera that will take good high-quality photos for cosplay and such, nothing too complicated.

Also, most affordable and effective cameras?

>> No.6548885

Bump for OP. I too am curious. I'll need to purchase a good camera for a film class I'll be taking soon, plus I would like the option of having myself or my boyfriend take pictures of my cosplay.

Outside of of camera, any recommendations for beginner light setups as well? Sorry for turning this into photography general.

You dont need a DSLR to take "high quality photos" - a DSLR gives you the control of full manual mode + interchangable lenses.

If you're going to get a camera and leave it in Auto, dont waste your money on a DSLR. If you're willing to take the time to practise and learn auto and spend the money (glass is often as expensive as the camera) then a good entry is the t2i or t3i if you're a canon fan, D5100 if you're a nikon fan.

I know olympus and sony make DSLRs as well, but I dont know much about them.

tl;dr unless you have the money and time to make a DSLR worth it, go for a higher end point and shoot.

>> No.6548899

Well what's your budget?

I'm a big fan of my Canon Rebel. I've purchased a few lenses for it and have been really happy with it but now that I'm getting into photography I want to upgrade to something nicer.

First learn the basics of using a manual camera, then see if you want to invest in something expensive.

also a good list of starter cameras

The Canon G line is a really good gateway camera. It's technically a point and shoot, but it offers heaps of control and pretty good quality pictures. I have a G10 and it still does everything I need. It'll help you figure out whether it's really worth it for you to buy a full blown DSLR.

So I spent a long time doing research and playing with different cameras to find the best for me for boxing day.

Basically, Nikon is the cheapest for the best quality, right now that would be the D5100.

Canons are a little easier to use with a better interface, but you're looking at at least $200 more for the same quality photos (which would be the Rebel T4i right now).

Both of these cameras can be found online for probably around $500 for a kit. I bought my D5100 for $369 (body only) brand new and $219 for a separate lens.

You can also go a step down if you want to pay even less money, which would be the Nikon D3100, Nikon D5000 and Canon T3 or T3i.

Hope this helps!

>> No.6548937

What are the thoughts on the Canon T3i?

>> No.6548948

>>6548937
Canon rebel is a pretty standard okay camera. i've seen good photos with it, and i have the T2i. and they're easy to learn to use, and not that expensive, so they're very popular.

also- for like a reference a lot of people will recognize, Dakota Rose used a Canon Rebel when she got tumblr famous. idk what she uses not a days, but when she used to take a ton of a photos that's what she used.

Theoretically, you should be asking >>>/g/ about this, OP.

>> No.6548980

Fisrt of all, keep in mind that what will really make the difference are the lenes, and not the camera.

If you plan to take cosplay pictures, I suggest you to buy a semi-pro kit. The basic lens that come with those kits are good enough for you to take good looking cosplay photos and you can learn more about photography with them.

Then you can just buy a new lens focused on what you want.

I suggest you google some more, there are many sites that will give you better advice. then you can go to /p/ to ask questions on how to use your camera.

I recently obtained a Nikon L310. Not a DSLR, but it's probably the worst camera I've ever used.

I thought it would at least outperform my 5 year old Sony Cybershot, but I was mistaken.

Sage for slightly off topic and venting about all my shitty photos from ALA.

>> No.6549049

>>6549037
I think they meant "learn manual". Those guys are good but honestly for the price you might as well get an SLR. Better quality, more control more opportunity for upgrading lenses in the future, more accessories, etc.

Those little guys are excellent for learning manual controls on but they just aren't able to give you the same results. It's really not hard how to learn to use a DSLR, and even if you do want to use auto it will still look better than a point and shoot until you get used to manual.

The same will happen if you use your DSLR in Auto.

You need to learn how to use your camera, be it a high0end p&s or a dslr.

You can't go wrong with Nikon or Canon. If you need to ask, though, you should pretty much go with whatever the cheapest model Canon or Nikon have available now. Don't expect great pictures, though. NOT because they're not great cameras: they are. You need to learn to take pictures if you really want to make the most of a SLR, digital or not. Unless you paid less than $100 for your camera, it CAN take good photos, you just need to learn how to use it. Spend a few days with google and looking at photography websites. You'll be taking much better pictures and won't have spent any money.

this, I can't express enough how much it is as much the user as it is the camera. I've seen some great photos done on an iphone and point and shoots. Having a dslr is great when you need full manual control over every aspect of your photo. Which was the case with me and why I upgraded from an epl-1 to a t3i after a 5 months.

The Epl-1 is still a great camera and is kind of a cross between a point and shoot and a dslr. You have access to manual controls if you need to and they go for around $300 i think used. It also has great video. I switched over to the t3i because I hated menu surfing and the magic lantern program for canon camera's is awesome for video. I used the epl-1 along side my t3i for photos since my t3i would be on a video rig and its a hassle to take pics with it sometimes.

Anyway pic related, it's some random pic from the epl-1

So as an aside, I got a higher end P+S a while ago, I really like it, but I have a hard time getting closeups on it. Are there any suggestions for this? I mean tiny things- macro imagery even. Even when I have the macro on.

please for do not shit up /p/ with another one of those threads. instead READ THE MANUAL IT CAME WITH, most of your questions can be answered by just reading the damn manual. if you want to learn more about taking better photos, go to your local book store and pick up a book about photography and composition.

it's a physical limitation of the lens/camera. there are some macro adapter things you can put in front but they're more like stopgap measures and not meant for serious macro.
