My sister's got kids, so I dress them up for the local con. They come for a few hours on my slow staff days, walking around with me and getting their pictures taken.

When the girl is old enough, I'm going to Sakura Kinomoto the shit out of her. I love all of Sakura's outfits, but they stop looking cute once you're a teen.

I've been obsessing over this idea for a while now. I have a few ideas, including Cotton Tail Teemo or Kyubie (I'd probably dress up as Mami). Idk, just the thought of a toddler barely able to walk, tottering around in a onesie is just adorable. I was also thinking that once she became old enough, I'd dress her up as Annie and I'd dress up as Tibbers or find some other cosplay we could do together.

I don't have pictures, but I have a story.

Let's go back to the year... fuck, I dunno. It was like 2006 or something like that. I was 13. It was the first con I'd ever gone to. My little brother was 5. I lived about two blocks from the Mesa Convention Center, which is where Phoenix Comicon used to be held. On Saturday, my parents had to work, so the one stipulation for them paying for my full con ticket was that I had to have him with me until they got off work on Saturday, since kids under 10 or something were allowed to get in with someone who'd bought a con ticket.

I wanted my brother to dress up and have fun with it, because I didn't think he'd have a lot of fun otherwise. So I put him in his Darth Vader halloween costume.

Well, there were some guys in full storm trooper gear at the con, and they actually welcomed him as their leader, saluted him and whatnot.

My brother absolutely loved it. He's 11 now, and he still remembers it.

Funny you should say that, I actually had to trade him a pack of lego minifigures for the right to dress him up this year. He was afraid everyone would make fun of him for the costume I chose, Meelo from the Legend of Korra.

But we went to JoAnns to get fabrics and ran into some fellow cosplayers going to the same con, and they were just squealing over him, and now he's all proud and excited, and more eager than ever to cosplay. I'm not sure how long I'll get to choose his costumes, but I think he'll be dressing up for a while. I'm glad I ran into those girls, he's a lot more eager to let me fit him now!

If you're a guy, do Hughes and his daughter from Full Metal Alchemist. Guaranteed to break hearts - Hughes adores his wife and daughter, and when he (spoiler) dies, his daughter is devastated.

If you're a girl, maybe something like Mom and Rose from Homestuck, or Ms Weasley and Ginny from Harry Potter.

You could even do something like Madoka and Homura - her as Madoka, you as Homura, magical girl outfits. Homura's always trying to protect Madoka, after all, and Madoka does wear a pretty pink dress!

I'm married and hubby and I don't have any kids yet. He's kind of gotten tired of anime conventions and I mostly go for work. Usually prefer the comic book or game conventions.

Part of me is "God it'd be so cute to do a family cosplay" but then part of me is "Got make sure the kid actually enjoys the con, is comfortable, and do I want to drag them around a convention center?"

Maternal instinct has to override the cute factor.

Well yeah but it's actually about a little girl whose mother died when she was young and never coped with the death because she's being raised by her mother's cousin who is emotionally damaged and wants to replace the mother with the daughter.

The girl hits on the teacher to piss him off but eventually falls in love with him for being the only compassionate and determinedly good adult person in her life. He helped pull her out of her darkness (she got a teacher fired and almost pushed another down the stairs) and he intervenes on the mutually parasitic codependent relationship she has with her caretaker.

It's good if you get a hotel room and then treat it like a mini vacation. Go with your kid and husband to the convention on a Saturday afternoon just for a few hours, then let them chill in the room/go explore the city (if you're not local). You can enjoy the rest of the convention.

Not a mom, but I just hate watching people try to bring their children to these events but then plan no sitter or anything and try to drag their kids around the ENTIRE time. They look so bored and frustrated, the kids.

This is exactly what my husband and I do with our kid.
We usually get a suite and do con stuff in moderation.
A lot of cons have kids play rooms now which has been a life saver.
