So sick of Homestuck. I don't even mind the series, the costumes are just mostly so boring and even the more intricate ones have been done to death.

One of my biggest convention thrills was going down into the lobby and looking out into the sea of technicolour costumes.

I would take hundreds of pictures, spend hours just sitting around with friends playing 'guess the character'.

It's just not the same when 50% of the crowd is cosplaying from the same series, and there are a hundred of each character wearing very similar costumes. You just stop seeing them afer a while and don't really want to take pictures.

I think gijinka can be a nice way to show some con spirit without committing to a full on costume. To use your Halloween anology, say you went to some big Halloween party. Some people come in full costume, which is cool-- those are your full-on cosplayers. Some people don't come in costume, but they still make an effort to be festive and wear a cute black and orange sweater and some bat clips in their hair-- those are your gijinka folk. It's still more fun and playful than showing up in a t-shirt and jeans.

I think a lot of people have just plain moved on from Final Fantasy stuff since the popularity has kind of waned after X-2. Homestuck, can't blame the fandom though, it's just fucking terrible character designs/outfits. Shirts and black hair wow.

MLP/Gijinkas/Ironic Cosplays due to the fact that most are just closet cosplays with little-to-no effort. I love when good gijinkas or MLP cosplays are done, but honestly, seeing 40+ Applejacks all wearing daisy dukes, a plaid shirt and cowboy boots gets really old really fast.

And finally bad genderbends/shit crossplaying. Bad genderbends are straightforeward, tits and thighs everywhere, slight resemblance but they look like strippers who decided to buy a leg avenue theme costume to cater to a nerd to get more tips. And bad genderbend is when girls decide to crossplay that male character but don't even bother to bind/just look fucking sloppy. Yeah, I realize Tony Stark wears suits and Goodwill has $10 suits that you can buy. But he's a fucking billionaire, he gets that shit tailored. Don't run around looking like you're in babby's first suit and at least spend the extra cash to make it fit right. If people spend hundreds to make decent costumes, you can spend the $50 to get a suit tailored.

My first reaction to seeing Vanellope and the children of the candy corn while watching Wreck it Ralph is holy fuck there's gonna be a lot of cosplay of this.

I know it's brought up here every once in awhile but I'm kinda irked at seeing so many western franchises being cosplayed at anime cons. I know blah blah blah every should be welcome at a con. Whatever I still don't like it. I would almost say that western franchises are beating out eastern stuff. I can kind of deal with it at cons but when people are wearing Homestuck to Japanese culture festivals is where I think it really crosses a line.

BTW my local anime store owner says when he sells in con dealer's rooms that Homestuck cosplayers are the number one thieves. If you're butthurt Homestucks about how outsiders feel about your fandom it's half because of unsealed body paint and half because of shitty behavior like this.

Oh and I've seen that there's a lot of designs from that series that are kinda cool, but for the most part people just wear those fucking goofy ass troll costumes.

Oh and I have pretty much and genderbend 'lolita' outfit. I have yet to see it work once.

Naruto is one of my favorite series but i rarely see cosplays from it anymore. I did Kushina last year before i saw other people cosplay her, only a few fans recognized me but thats fine since i just love her character alot :)

Just cosplay who you like but i think you'd get more respect for doing someone who isn't overdone. I would love to see some side or lesser known characters like Kotetsu, Izumo, Jugo, Shikaku, Inoichi, Choza (a father InoShikaCho group would be amazing!), Ao, Darui, Ibiki, Genma, Anko, Yamato, or maybe seasonal versions of the main characters from the movies. Homestuck - not enough variety and not enough people that don't just slap on some gray paint and call it a day.
Black Butler - mostly Ciel and Grell. It's always the same outfits and various levels of horrible.
Vocaloid's Miku - overdone and 99.9% always horrible

"Bunny" versions - I'M SO SICK OF THIS SHIT. It got mega popular all of a sudden so now everyone is jumping this bunny bandwagon and making characters into bunny suits. It's one thing if it's a concept art - I get it - but if I see another Bunny!Avenger I'm giong to punch them in the tit.

Not true here. Assassin's Creed doesn't sluttify their women as much as, say, Street Fighter. Actually, many American and Canadian video games are getting better about this. Sure, we still have to deal with boob armor and the like, but many games have the women fully clothed nowadays.

As for manga and movies, well that really depends on genre. If you're a male (and I suspect you are), media aimed at you will feature a lot more sexy women. I'm a woman, so the media I enjoy has a lot of fine male asses. As a teen, much of my entertainment was BL. This does not mean that all manga is fujoshit, it just means that that is what I happened to read.

Cons are full of casual as shit cosplay (MLP and homestuck mostly and even supernatural/tony stark) now so it just looks BORING staring into the crowd just like someone mentioned here already. I remember cons being full of all kinds of colors and exciting suits, even if they weren't god tier quality they still showed some effort. Now you can just order a shirt from cafepress and put on a wig and shitty styrofoam horns and call it a cosplay. No more elaborate anime/JRPG costumes. Now the con crowd is just people in plain clothes with a wig. The few anime costumes are some shitty polyester vocaloid dresses from eBay. If you're not familiar with homestuck you can't even tell the characters apart since they're all just black wig+black shirt+grey skin+jeans. And there's a billion of them. -Finn and Fionna (especially the latter). If people are going to do Adventure Time, why not do a character who hasn't been done to death? Where's my Lemongrab and Ice King cosplay?
-Fad-of-the-month movie cosplays. Jack Frost, the Once-ler, what have you.

I just have pet peeves for gijinkas not done well. Like I see so many closet cosplay of Applejack and it's just annoying. Like I've seen a few done well (like at one con there was a couple with a baby that did a gijinka cosplay of a Leafeon and an Glaceon and the baby was an Eevee that was adorable!) but I'd say 9 times out of 10, they're just incredibly sloppy and lazy.

I am a huge comics fan and mostly /co/splay. That being said, I wear my comicbook costumes to COMICBOOK CONVENTIONS. It just seems logical to me. Do you wear a pirate costume to a toga party? toga to a disco party? edwardian costume to a victorian party?

It just seems in poor taste and a little silly to completely disregard the theme of an event just because its fan related. You don't see people wearing soccer jerseys to a basketball event, and they're both sports.

When I go to an anime convention I wear an anime or at least related (like a JRPG) costume. If you don't even like anime enough to have one character you'd like to dress as, WHY ARE YOU THERE?

I'm really sick of going to anime conventions and anime characters being the cosplay rarity. I know non-cosplayers are disappointed by this too. I guess the main reason why I don't get why this is such a big deal is just because the only cons I've been to were mashup cons, like Phoenix Comicon, where it's an anime/vidyagame/comic convention and it doesn't matter where shit came from. It just seems kind of dumb to get mad about it because the three overlap a lot, and while it's not hard to go, "Well this is an anime. This is a game. This is a western cartoon." I would love to see a good Isaac and Miria, especially if they kept doing wardrobe changes throughout the con.

There are also lots of other shows/games that are/were reasonably popular and have interesting character designs, but I haven't seen much. At least not at my local cons. Some of the ones that come to mind are Jojo, YGO, K and the game Legend of Dragoon. Sure, they have some criticisms, but still.

It'd be nice to see a lot of the less common (but still recognizable) characters from a series cosplayed, too.I love seeing some of the cool-looking aliens from DBZ whenever I come across them.

I also feel like I don't see enough cosplays from the series I enjoyed as a kid, but that could just be nostalgia talking.

Does that mean that cosplayers shouldn't wear make-up if their character doesn't seem to wear some? No. You just contradicted yourself. Make-up is used to enhance facial features. And cosplayers have every right and logical reason to do the same thing they did on a set.

That said not everyone is gifted with make-up skills and common sense. Hence the raccoon eyes.
