Okay so not exactly cosplay related but why the hell is JohnDave so popular? Not bashing everyone's OTPs and crap but its really frustrating whenever I go to a the big photoshoot meets at a con and hear them announce "AND NOW, THE ONE TRUE SHIP, THE ONE EVERYONE LOVES, ULTIMATE YAOIS JOHNDAVE" and I wish I was kidding but thats almost every freaking con shoot I ever go to.

I think she could have worked with the bostline dress if she did god tier. Like of she made a top to go Over it using one of the other cOlors on the skirt. And made a hood. She could have gotten pink shoe and blue striped rights. All of she was smart enough. But I like the idea of using the pattern on the bottom of the skirt in the trickster cosplay.

It may just be me being bitter too, since I cosplay one of the female kids and if the "slash" shoots are all done first half the population leaves right after and then there's nobody for your shoots.

idk I think its an idea that maybe some of the shoot runners could think about more if they don't already? Usually all the "major" ships are done first and then the list of requested ones after, so its understandable some kinda fall by the wayside but still.

hi hsg, looking for a little friendly critic here.
this is me from the whole "year in cosplay" fad that's going around. yeah, i know i look like complete ass in the before picture (the lighting was terrible too).
anyways, 'was wondering if 1. i improved at all, and 2. what can i do to make it better.
i know my horns are backwards in the after picture, haha (but i think that's a thing with scorpio troll cosplayers? i seen it a lot and it's just a mere mistake.)
i think my whole outfit is fine, i'm just a little worried on the horns and wig. i made the horns out of model magic and molded them around a base of aluminum foil. didn't sand paper (probably should of) and didn't let the clay sit out for like a week (i heard model magic can talk like a week to dry, and i made the after ones the night before lmao). i know a little part of my skin is showing at the top of my bangs but once again, mistake.

I don't think it's reasonable to ask for contacts for Vriska's 7-pupil eye. The only way of getting one is to shell out in the $200 range for a custom one, and that's IMO not a reasonable thing to ask of someone for a cosplay, especially since a good proportion of people can't even wear contacts for various reasons.

Incidentally, if anyone has any suggestions for commercially available cosmetic contacts that simulate her eightfold eye, I'd love to hear them. Fynale Y19 is the only one I know of that has spots around the pupil, but there's eight of them and I can't find any reviews showing how strong the effect is.

Hey HSG, can we talk about poses for a second? In the picture attached I drew some of the poses people will use in photos that I am just fucking sick of.
The "thighs" one boil down to people with chunkier legs who do this...A pose with their legs that is just wholly unflattering. If you've got more meat on your legs there are other ways to pose your legs that don't make you look like a sack of potatoes.
The rest are self-explanatory. I couldn't think of any more than these at the top of my head, though.

The best thing to do is beforehand work out a couple of poses for your character in a mirror, and then try your best to memorize them so that when someone stops you for a photo you can snap into pose quickly.

Failing that, though- I find a really easy variation on The Thighs which works quite well for girly characters (and also if, like myself, you've got a curvier figure), is to put all of your weight on one foot and then to draw your knees in together, with the toes of your foot that your weight isn't on pointed outwards, and then lean slightly in the same direction.

If your feet aren't visible in the pic just stand evenly on both and point your toes outward and squeeze your buttocks together. Minimized hips and saddlebags. Also turning your shoulders towards the front without slouching makes them look wider and more square. Both of these work for curvy crossplayers.


What I do is I go somewhere and do 30 pushups before photoshoots to pump upo my arms if I'm crossplaying. Not even my best friends know this but I always get compliments on how sexy my arms look and I'm a short and girly girl.

i feel like when black lipstick is on (or any dark color) it has to be done really neatly, when i do mine i freshly sharpen my black liner and take my time lining my lips, and then i apply my lipstick with a tiny stiff lip brush, blot once and then apply from the tube afterwards i clean up around the edges where needed with a q-tip and makeup remover

As obvious as that advice sounds, I just realized I'm guilty of doing that in many of my photos. And lo and behold, I'm never satisfied with how my binding looks, even though I wear a legit binder.

I think the reason myself (and probably others) do that is because my posture is so horrendous that I over compensate to try to appear "normal" when it comes time for pictures.

I'm not sure what's going on with your wig there? Maybe it's as simple as just pulling it down, so you don't have that line at the top of your forehead. Since you're already on planning on doing something with the gloves and fins, I would suggest doing something about your makeup. That one shitty John/Rufioh cosplayer here, I styled Ivan's wig but the lace seam is a little awkward around makeup and lace wig glue. I'll have to figure something out for that. The fins were kind of a last minute addition made out of model magic with resin scales drawn on, I'll stick to the latex in the future, I was going for a very canon look but eh, it didn't look as good as I thought.

The horns were both done by me, just model magic, an assload of sanding and jewelry resin for extra polish/durability. Mine are held in place by a long copper wire and 2 screw posts in the headband. I'll probably start doing commissions soon. I go by ColonelMayor on the tumblespace and usually try not to be too much of a goober.

Your Cronus really needs a ton of work.

You have absolutely no shading on your face and look extremely flat. I don't know if you're just ugly or what, but you could really deal with some makeup definition. Cheekbones and eyebrows would significantly help.

Also, the glued nails on your gloves look really fake, especially considering you don't have finger details. You need to at least try to replicate those.

I think it's already been said, but your hairline is awful. Ditch the wig altogether, it's not going to work. It doesn't even look like it fits your face.

Also, scars aren't just one color. You need more details in other purples, to make them look realistic. Seriously, look into makeup.

That was my first attempt machine sewing the nylon light grey tights from We Love Colors but my wrists are really small so I am going to try and stick with the nylon/lycra tights and get much smaller needle in the future. Are lycra blends similar to spandex blends for these sort of things? Also I used (a bit too much) nail varnish for the seam strengthening, is that the best product for it like the guides recommend or do people have better luck with the any other anti fraying chemicals?

All things said and done the horns, wigs, arm socks, and majority of other costume bits are first attempts. Next time I don the Rufioh wings I'll make sure I look in the mirror before doing a weird face like that. I don't understand the shapes my body makes sometimes.

I'd say go with the freezer paper method- print out the symbol, use it to make a stencil cut out from freezer paper. Iron the freezer paper shiny side down onto the shirt, and also put a piece of freezer paper inside the shirt, shiny side up (don't iron the inside paper, though; this is just to keep it from leaking through onto the back of the shirt). Paint symbol on with fabric paint, let dry. DON'T just pull up the freezer paper when dry, instead go around the edges with an x-acto knife first.

Be careful when painting around the edges- even though you're using the freezer paper as a stencil, I've notice on occasion that the fabric will soak the paint into itself underneath the freezer paper sometimes. This is all right on the black troll shirts because you can just use a bit of black paint or even a sharpie to fix it, but with Meulin's shirt you'd pretty much need an exact color match. So basically just be careful around the edges.

Alternately, it'd probably look all right if you cut the symbol out of a fabric that won't fray and used Heat n Bond to attach it.

I'm a Jane cosplayer, and while I think I'm decent Jane's a tough character to make look great, especially in her everyday outfit. What do you think makes a good Jane cosplayer? Jane is one of the few characters that I see as being a little chubbier, but you're probably not willing to put on weight for a cosplay. I don't know anything about makeup, but I prefer Janes with white or grey skirts. The symbol color skirts just seem too bright to me. My favorite one I ever saw was high waisted kind of ballooned at the bottom. Sorry, that's all I got for you. Good luck.

I kind of like this one? It's cleanly executed for a genderbend and the vest looks well made. The wig could use some more styling, but those tattoos are probably the cleanest/neatest looking ones I've ever seen on any Porrim, so color me impressed.

I cosplay Vriska and instead of lipstick I always use kryolan aquacolor for her lips (i use it for they grey too) It is vibrant, and because it is the aquacolor it doesn't come off unless you activate it with water (so just be careful when drinking but just keep it with you for touch-ups) If it gets in your mouth it doesn't hurt you, just tastes a bit off.

You already look a lot better than the majority of the Vriskas I see, but there are definitely changes that should be made. The horns are the wrong way, and are a bit out of proportion ('claw' horn looking close to becoming a ring instead of a claw in the first photo, the skinniness of the horns in the second photo). Make the horns thicker at the bottom if you remake them (since the whole direction thing) and sand the shit out of them. Your facial expression is better in the second, if that counts? It's hard to tell in the second photo, but always fill your eyebrows in. It makes your expressions look bolder, and keeps them from disappearing in the grey. I'd find a more opaque lip color as well, since some pink is peeking out. Fix the jacket, make new horns, and make those changes to the makeup and it should look considerably better.

I have a long ribcage and an invisible waist from the front, so if I don't have time to hit the perfect 45-degree angle that makes instant model, putting my hands at my waist helps define it. With long arms, my instinct is to drop them down to my hips, but that turns my torso into a square.

Personal peeve is cosplayers who slouch. You might have a fabulous costume, but I'll scroll by your photos if you have horrible posture. Shoulders up, back, and down, and keep your neck relaxed while you do it. You might be a room-dwelling computer-gazing hunchback for 95% of your life, but look good for the 5% that'll show up online.
Ladies, it helps if you think of puffing your chest up and out just a little, but not to the teenager-on-MySpace extent.
