I'm snowed in and can't get into work today.

Can we have a Jojo thread to keep me entertained? I'll dump what I have, but I need to fill my collection

I have not seen a ton of jojo cosplay at local cons, not recently at least, but I definitely expect that to change (at least one upcoming con is going to be completely jojo-fied, It will be epic.)

As far as metallic spandex and vinyl? Why, I have a pile of it in my bedroom right now waiting to be turned into Trish & Hermes. It is fabulous in the best way.

I could go either way. We'll definitely see more JoJo cosplay, but people my want to go as characters they've seen in the anime. This could lead to a lot of shitty Jonathans, Josephs etc. Nobody can REALLY pull them off properly.

On the other hand, people might read some of the manga and we could get some Jotaro or similar characters who are much easier to do and pull off. We'll have to see really.

Most of the anime cosplay plans I've seen locally tend to be girls settling on child Dio because they aren't big enough for the other outfits. I'm not seeing many child Jonathans planned, though. And of course, Speedwagon.

Steel Ball Run is awesome and all, but it's not like Jojo has an overload of purely asian characters (bar like, part 4 & part 8). You are right though, the character designs are fantastic

I want to wait until a few more chapters come out, but I think I may add Nijimura to my list. And maybe something from SBR. Basically, this manga is going to need some cosplay love that isn't the storm of shitty part-1 gender-swap cosplay that is going to start popping up.

But why do that when you can be Erina instead?

I'm with you on adding Nijimura to my list. She's already great.

Although what you said brings up a good point...

Has ANYBODY EVER seen really, really good high level cosplay of the 100% Asian characters (Kakyoin, most of part 4 except Josuke and Tonio) done by non-Asian cosplayers? I've seen plenty of convincing white JoJos for the mixed-race ones, but someone like Rohan or Kakyoin, can it be done by white people?

Because they think Dio is kawaii ugu desuuuu o/~ and for some reason they think that means he should have tits. Or something... who knows what tumblr causes.

I went on a bit of a deviantart hunt to see if I could find any of those characters, I like this Yukako but otherwise I the non-asian part-4 cosplays weren't really impressive.

That said though, most of the other parts almost always look better to me with western cosplayers, especially part 6.

I think the rest for everything else is really up to cosplayer sewing, makeup, and posing skill. Most of the good JoJo cosplayers look way different cosplaying other series, regardless of where they come from. Makeup skill is pretty much a JoJo must.

But it's clearly a sweater vest in the original art, what else are you going to use?

Sweaters are such a JoJo problem. There's a ton of designs with sweater vests (Louvre Rohan, mist of part 1 anime) or sweater trim (Hermes etc) or overly complicated sweaters (Mista, Diego, Doppio, etc). What do you even do about those?

Sweater vest or not it should've at least been more fitted or a better, sturdy material. It straight up looks like broadcloth when you first look at it. It could also be the color. A lot of the sweaters in jojo don't really strike me as something that could look good if you actually do it as a sweater. I'd say just make sure to pay attention to any obvious vertical seams and make sure the costume as a whole looks good.

Basically what you'd have to do is act like you were finishing off the rows where the slashes are but like, only on a small bit of the row, and then adding more in later. You'll have to make a knitting pattern for it, I would go browse or find some and see how they work. I've did some stuff like that when I was young, but heck if I haven't forgotten all the proper terms.

I've seen a hand-knitted Doppio sweater (pic related), and it looks a bit off. I think part of it is the large gauge, but also that this cosplayer tried to knit it all as one piece, compared to something like Hanyaan's franken-sweater which looks slightly better and is also made of two different sweaters reassembled.

Either way, a Doppio sweater is probably not a good idea for a novice knitter.

I'm willing to bet she used that really cheap bulk yarn you can get; it always looks stiff and hard, and pills really easily.

You're right though, its not something to tackle initially - knitting some scarves and like, some cute things off of patterns first for practice would be good.

Since there's people who are familiar with knitting and with JoJo in this thread, I went through about 15-20 pages of steelballrunway to find this.

How is knitting sweaters like this even possible? Could you do the lines in a contrast color?

I think it's a type of cable knit.

I made this costume back at the beginning of 2009 for Katsucon, although that photo is from Katsucon 2010. It was based off Speedwagon's design from the PS2 Phantom Blood game, because there were never any official color illustrations from Araki and the colors in the game were so gaudy I had to do it.

Vest isn't broadcloth either, just some kona cotton material I got really cheap at the last minute as it was the final part of the outfit I got made the night before Katsucon that year.

As for why I didn't do a sweater vest back then? That only came about in the design in the new anime, in the manga he has a vest. Come on anon, nitpick my stuff, I really don't care and await them when I do an anime version Speedwagon come Katsucon, but at least get your facts right!

>> No.6521004

For the Doppio people: I'm just going to warn everybody that that piece of shit purple sweater is possibly the most annoying thing I've ever sewn in my life. I was picking masking tape out of the seams and my sewing machine for days. I've also had to dye it about four times; after failing to track down two white 100% dyeable fabric sweaters in the appropriate rib gauges (there's two rib gauges in the design, not just one!), I bought two cotton cream ones, used dye stripper, and then dyed them purple in the same dye bath before reassembling into the Doppio sweater. No matter what I use, they won't hold the dye very long. Doppio is probably my personal favorite of my JoJo costumes, but almost nothing else has come close to that costume in terms of headache given.

Since this is a good time to ask for this thread, do you have any make-up tips for JoJo-themed cosplay? Also, JoJo cosplay tips in general?

>> No.6521268

>>6521199
Personally I think your makeup should depend heavily on the arc. 1-6 you need some serious eyeliner regardless of character gender, 7 and 8 a bit less so. Lower lashes mascaraed is a must, again both genders. Try redrawing your brows to match the character's shape if possible (there's nothing like that ヘ arch to make something scream JoJo), contour your face with some of the shadows drawn on in the comic or anime (you often want cheekbones that can cut through butter, and emphasizing your jawline rarely hurts), try using highlighter under your brows and on your cheeks, and never use overly large colored contact lenses, although brightly contrast colored eyeshadow can be good if you're doing the more FABULOUS arcs.

If you can't find lipstick the right color, you can color your lips with a white eyeliner, dab on eyeshadow from an 88 palette over it with a brush, and then put on a touch of clear gloss.

General tips I'd give:
>POSING POSING POSING practice as much as you can
>if you do a lot of leaning-back poses, prepare to be sore
>learn to NOT care if you're almost touching someone's crotch because the poses call for it
>even if you aren't going to be Dio, someone's probably going to want you to WRYYYY, so learn how to do it
>know your character and your arc well
>consider using fake nails with nail tape to avoid screwing up your nails if you paint them blue or whatnot
>do a kajillion makeup and wig tests to make sure they photograph well
>be careful with the vinyl and the spandex until you know what you're doing
>if you're Dio or Vanilla Ice or someone like that, athletic cup please.

Thank you for sharing your tips, I'll keep all of them in mind.

Oh, and another few that I forgot.

Most of the arcs are VERY influenced by the fashion of the time that they were written, so you'll want to look at actual clothes from the period it was WRITTEN (not set) to figure out what the proper fit on things are. That sweater up there that looks just like Mista's? Yeah, that was from within 2 years of his design introduction. Part 4's pants all have that wonderful baggy 90s tailoring, even SBR features some clothing fit elements popular now. And you can't go wrong looking at 90s Versace for inspiration.

Araki is not a bad artist but he cares more about overall panel layout and shape than about whether proportions are correct. This means that 9 times out of 10, a character in any given drawing is going to be incredibly short-waisted or incredibly long-waisted, and often the same character is drawn as both. You'll have to really be careful proportioning the outfits to yourself to preserve the silhouettes, especially if your own body is drastically different. Gotta get that hourglass shape in everything that isn't part 3 or 4.

And always, ALWAYS, pointy-toed shoes with low chunk heels are your default shoe. For quick shoepants (the plague of parts 6 and later), make stirrup pants that go slightly over your feet out of spandex, and then cover some shoes in the same spandex with a small hole for your foot. It'll look like magically all one piece without actually having to magically be all one piece.

OCC Lip Tar and Sobe Botanicals are both good sources for JoJo lipstick. Some of the JoJo cosplayers also like using theatrical creme makeup (ben nye etc) with a lip brush, or eyeliner pencils.

Green lipstick tends to require either a white or green "lipliner" coat underneath because skin shows through the easiest. Blue or orange are both easier "weird color" lipsticks to wear. There's also the drag-queen-style trick where the cosplayers cover their lips in both a colored base and matching-color glitter, but that only works if the rest of the outfit is equally shiny.

...I secretly wish you could wear JoJo lipstick in the real world without getting stared at. It looks so great.

A LOT. I ended up underestimating how long this would take to sew on all the stars (each one has ten sides to sew, which seems like logic until you realize there's nine pivot points per star and the stretch stitch takes forever to sew), had to take my sewing machine as my carry-on to San Antonio, spent nights in the hotel room crying, trashed the room full of pins and left-over stabilizer, and I never want to see those stars again. There's one or two places on the leg where I should really put an extra star but nooooope I just plain don't want to.

For Nijimura, do what I'm going to do: Buy black tights with ligher-color star print (I have some already haha) and put some brightly colored tights under that. Truuuuuust me.

I've seen FF made out of tons of fabrics. The key is to match your wig color perfectly and to keep the cut accurately extreme. If you use a matte fabric, put the gd st jail logo on with something shiny (applique time!) and use a matte fabric if your overalls are shiny. Make mock ups. Sew well, match hair and wig, use funky color lipstick, and pick a nice contrast for the jail logo, and you're set. Foo Fighters is never going to be as flashy as Jolyne. Try picking a color for the back which you see paired with your "main" color a lot in art. If purple's your main, orange or gold or white. If green is your main, gold or white or pink. Or maybe orange even then; Stone Ocean uses more orange than other arcs.

The beauty of JoJo is that you can pull off pretty much any color scheme, so just go with personal preference. The purple-and-orange tends to be the first choice for most third parties (the SAS figure, the PS2 game, what have you), but pretty much any scheme will work so long as you preserve the general motif of his main outfit being darker than his wristbands and headbands.

Thanks guys!

I was thinking that since most of the ones I've seen are purple (and that purple-and-blue is default) it might stand out better to use navy, and since the few black based ones I've seen have all complained about people whining about Halloween at them, black's out. So I might just go for dark blue and orange. Complimentary colors!

Yep, and even Hermes can be more like 5'6"-5'7". And if you're like 5'5" and want to fudge, you could always use sliiiightly larger heels and those Korean height insoles.

So I'd put even Hermes as "not-midget mode," not necessarily amazon mode.

Alright, as a Jojo's fan I am not offended by her being a generic hetalia faggot but for the love of god there is so much wrong with this photo. For starters, she used fuckin' red contacts for Young Dio. Her costume looks poorly constructed, her wig looks absolutely dreadful, she doesn't appear to be binding and it doesn't appear that she knows anything about the characters aside from what she saw from the anime.

Shit's fucking stupid. And they aren't even doing anything fun or Araki-esque

I'm going to put my name out on the line here and say that, as someone who did Phantom Blood kids about four years ago from the PS2 game version, it's REALLY HARD to try and show accurate Dio and Jonathan childhood relationship (by which I mean "dio makes jonathan cry") in just cosplay pictures. I can honestly see where she would think of "forcing him to kiss my feet" would try and show the correct mood. It's going to come off as yaoi pandering, but god, when I tried I didn't do much better.

Pic related. Granted this is an outtake picture, but this is what ended up happening when I tried Young Jonathan for the first time. I don't see how this is much/any better. (And if you doubt that this is horribly sewn, YOU ARE WRONG. Fuck, I ended up holding all the buttons on my vest together with safety pins through the shanks.)

She's overreacting, but at the same time, it's frightening when people from the internet mob a picture that you don't see the problem with, and I think the people reading this thread also overreacted a bit. If she's still in here... yes, different contacts and slightly better wig would help, and spelling Jonathan right would also be a start, but newbies gonna newbie and I'm a bit sad to see my favorite fandom going all YUCK EW YAOI INVADERS instead of calmly and constructively pointing out what they don't like and how to fix it for future photos.

I don't really mind it that much either...there are a lot of homoerotic undertones in JJBA so it's not that surprising, if not inevitable that people are going to do their own spin on it regardless of the original material. Even on Pixiv there are a ton of fan comics regarding Dio and Jonathan's childhood relationship, ranging from terrible to pretty well-written. I don't see much of a difference when people are just doing the same in real-life with cosplay. It's not something worth ripping up the Jojo community for.
