It depends, I know quite a few people on /a/ that are perfectly capable of taking the step into romantic relationships. It all depends on who you talk to, while its true that quite a large part of /a/ would have trouble with romantic relationships, we also have those who actively engage in them, and those who only want a relationship with their waifu's. It's a mixed culture, most of the people who can hold relationships wont bring it up while on /a/ due to the amount of flak you get from the hardcore waifu lovers.

As far as /v/ goes, most of it is the result of being shy around women in a society where being the instigator in a relationship isn't just encouraged, but DEMANDED.

This in conjunction with the trend of "fake geeks" (Protip: we hate Jnig too) and the Call of Duty crowd basically embittered a lot of /v/ towards anything even remotely considered "normal social behaviour"
