Going to a-kon, anime fest, and dragon con. Might do san japan too if I can get that much time off. Cosplaying tsubaki and a friend is going to be black star for a-kon. Can't decide between nia or madoka though. And I'm going to get a table in artist alley for the first time at anime fest. Going to be a busy summer.

Anime Matsuri & San Japan for competition and overall "good cosplay" in the halls (though AM just posted about some rule changes that are causing quite a stir)

For photoshooting, San Japan is still pretty good since the riverwalk is right there, The woodlands was amazing but AM moved again so no one is sure how this year will go. They did post some "shoot locations" though and it looks promising. A-kon surprisingly might turn out well for photos this year too because of the Anatole and it's huge courtyard. AND if you have a costume that would make sense at a beach, Oni-con.

A-kon will be at the Hilton Anatole in 2013. I was there last month for an audit professionals convention and I must say that it's going to be pretty fucking awesome.

They have a MASSIVE Asian art collection spread out throughout the hotel. They also have a huge atrium with lots of space. The place is fucking massive as well. Plenty of space for the 20,000+ people they expect to show next June.

Yeah... about that "cosplay" bit... I actually only go to A-kon because one of my buddies is a staff head there so he and many of my other friends are usually there. I also greatly enjoy the people watching. I come to /cgl/ on rare occasion. I can't honestly say why, frankly. Boredom I guess... I'm more of a Hearn-weeaboo than anything else. It's pretty standard. Enjoy Austin while you're in town is my advice. Go off site and eat at legit austin restaurants. I'll give you some suggestions if you want. Also, if you are planning on entering the cosplay contest go read there rules, then be completely confused. Either way brace for a royal clusterfuck of a cosplay show this year (possibly worse than last...and that's impressive since last year's was in a tent.)

>>6468644
word of advice, if you are going to be promoting another convention on any level you do not want to associate yourself with 4chan. For Cosplay, not Akon, their competition sucks like whoa, but I've heard great things about their new property so shoots should be good there. San Japan has a good competion, and Matsuri did, but their cosplay head just quit so, i'm doubtful that will carry on. Matsuri also had a great shoot location, but their move has changed that. Onicon actually has a good location for beach shoots and San Japan has the river walk so...

My cons in 2013 will be Dallas Comic-Con, A-Kon & Animefest for sure, but my only set in stone cosplay so far will be Brett Booth's Superboy concept.

I have other cosplays I want to do, but really deciding what fits in my budget/schedule for the next few months. Gonna have less time with work, school, and starting gym in a few weeks.

>> No.6483025

I'm new to Texas (moved from Alabama a few months ago) and plan on going to A-kon, AnimeFest, and hopefully San-Japan. I'm going to keep toting around my various Norway cosplays to cons, but this year I also hope to do Holo (Spice & Wolf), Shieme (Blue Exorcist), and Yoshino (Blast of Tempest).

Kinda unrelated to cons, but I'll admit, I'm a Hetaliafag. So anyone have the scoop on the infamous DFW Hetalia group? I've scoured the internet and am not turning anything up except dead links to the drama here and some vague tumblr posts.

Exactly what happened? It's even more fishy now that I can't turn up info on them. Please, I don't want to have a hate thread on one person. In general, what are these events that have made the group so infamous? I need to know what I could be getting into being a Hetaliafag in Dallas (even if I don't join them).

Lol last years was BAD, the year before was ok. The year before that was ok. It hasn't been AMAZING in like three years, but that is ok, neither has A - kon. Honestly last years was awful because of the drama with the Hilton and them moving to the convention center. It also did not help many normal dealers did not show up, or could not, because for starters there were no weapons allowed to be sold. No porn either, and all the dealers had pretty much the same stuff. If that happens again this year I would be pretty pissed. However, over all the people made it a lot of fun, and so did the amount of games and panels there. So I will give it a chance, there is no way it could be worse than last years.

chances are that was not Ikkicon's decision and it was a rule the ATT center had. Since they are back at the hilton, if they had those things there in the past they will probably have them this year.

I've always liked Ikkicon, and even after "tentcon" I've still managed to attend much worse conventions, plus I just like having an excuse to go to Austin.

Okay, keep in mind this is coming from a Houston Hetaliafag, but here's the deal with DFW Hetalia: they had a lot of people with personality clashes. That's it. People fought with each other, were extremely petty and rude, and just in general unpleasant people to each other. There were a lot of accusations tossed around that the group was "elitist" and "not welcoming to newcomers" but from an outsider's perspective, I don't think that was the case. They had a tendency to be clique-y, yes, but that is literally every cosplay group ever.

Nowadays, I hardly hear anything, because a majority of them have moved on to other fandoms, especially Homestuck. I like to think that means that they've calmed down, but who knows for sure?

Thanks for the info. That seems to be indicative of Hetalia fandom in general. I'm hoping the new anime revs up the old base, since I kinda miss how things used to be back in like '09 when Hetalia was still this cool, underground movement.

Random question, if you cosplay Hetalia, do you carry your flag and how big is it? A lot of the cons I've gone to recently there haven't been many cosplayers with the large 3' x 5' flags like I have. I wondered if they're going "out of style" for the fandom?

You're right that most of the group has moved on.

Thankfully there is a pretty large faction of the group that now realizes ending friendships and whining up and down Facebook over costumes and panels is pretty fucking dumb. To the newbie: Do what I did. If you want to make lasting friends in the group, just be a wallflower for a while, and be acquaintances with everyone. Don't commit, and wait for drama. The people who roll their eyes and denounce it whenever drama comes around rather than frothing at the mouth are the people you want to hang around.

And wait for real drama to happen, everyone says omg I hate drama it's so dumb but half of them will step aside and refuse to get involved when it does happen and the other half will sit there and talk shit and spread rumors. No one likes to think they're the reason drama used to be so prevalent in the group.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the tip. In general, are they comprised of a lot of teenagers, or are there some adults in the mix too? Even if they've calmed down, I'm only interested in joining or interacting with members who are post-college (no offense to those still in school) and actually work. Again, nothing against the college kids or even the teens, but my group back home was full of these types and as a recent college grad, I can't relate to people who's greatest problem in life is what to wear to Homecoming.

If someone is mature enough, yes. I guess the type I'm thinking of is people who have no direction in general. I had bad experiences at my group back home even with the people in college, same age as me. Incredibly immature: one girl was in school with a self-designed major to be a voice actress... and flunked out because all she did was play video games and not go to class/do her homework.

It's mainly more of an issue of being able to relate. I know some teenager or regular college student can't relate to me as a working adult, just as I cannot relate to them (beyond liking the same anime, I mean). I've also heard from a source that the DFW group seems to be one where people constantly need rides. I just want mature, adult Hetalia fans. People who can love it immensely, but are chill and realistic about life.

I wouldn't discount being friends with someone still in school, but maturity is the deciding factor.

I know exactly the kind of person you're talking about. The kind of person who sees nothing wrong with living off their parents' dime and usually can't hold down a job because of some kind of bullshit about anxiety or ADD or fibromylagia or Attentionus Whorititius.

I dated a guy like this, who constantly whined that his life wasn't going anywhere. When I tried to offer solutions like federal financial aid for college or job fairs or whatever, he'd bitch about how nobody would hire him because he had a GED instead of a diploma and he'd never get into college. I tried to tell him community colleges didn't care and he whined about how companies don't hire community college graduates. It all depends on your cup size and the costume. If you're A/B range you can get away with a sports bra, providing if you're a B cup that the shirt you're going to wear isn't too tight. Loose fitting clothes will hide any boobs the sports bra doesn't flatten out. I'm a B and still wear sports bras, though I need a binder since the sports bra doesn't work for me anymore.

If you're anything above a B/C you are going to need a binder. I've seen them for $40 or so. It depends on what type you get. Just look for MTF binders for people who are transitioning.

Personally, as long as you make an effort, I think it doesn't matter as much. Now if you're a DD and obviously didn't bind for a crossplay... that's where I would take issue. But do what feels comfortable, too. If it's painful, don't do it. And never, never use Ace bandages.

I've tried to wear two sports bras and the straps KILL ME. But I'm in need of a new one and a binder since I'm a larger B now (stupid college weight gain). Sports bras, like any bra, need to be of a decent quality. No need to get the $100 bra, but don't go to Wal Mart, essentially. If you want a sports bra, try one from a sports store and a good brand, like Nike or something. It'll last longer, too.

http://ftm.underworks.com/ is a good site for reasonably priced binders. Unlike a sports bra, a binder will give you more of that male look. Sports bras on B cups tend to give you more of "hills" and a kinda rounded out "peck" if you will. Which would work if your guy was really beefy, but in the end it just looks weird and like your boobs have been compressed. So if you're worried, go with a binder. I've never used one so I can't vouch for comfort, but I'd imagine if they're designed for everyday use by individuals in transition, they can't be that bad.

Well, get pants that flatter you and are true to the character. But if the character wears really tight pants... like say, Edward Elric. I cosplay him and have a pair of really tight pleather pants. Probably wouldn't be the most flattering on someone who has really big hips. If your character wears general guy pants (not too loose, not too tight) getting actual men's pants would be good. Go to the thrift store to get some cheap. Pants from the men's section will be better than larger women's pants because women's pants have the crotch a lot closer and more fitted. But in general, it's all about fit and style.

Cosplay what you love and who you love, but keep in mind what's flattering. You're free to do whatever you want, but if you want to look good and not end up in a bad cosplay thread, use the same rules you would when you dress normally (get something to fit your figure and FLATTER you).

And you're welcome. Just want to make sure your first crossplay is good!

If you do, try and remove some of the offensive insignia, otherwise you're pretty much asking for drama. Even if inside the con people are okay with it, being around outside... just know your surroundings. You may be fine with dressing as an SS officer, but I can guarantee there are people who will not be and will be incredibly offended by your choice of outfit.

Also, why not get a wig for Phoenix Wright? No need to dye your hair. Unless your hair already could be styled like his anyway, you'll need a wig.

There is a difference between wearing and doing what you want and doing something completely insensitive. I feel you really cross a line with this type of outfit and would bear some sense of responsibility for anything that happens because of this costume choice. This is exactly the kind of stuff fandoms advise against doing. All it's going to do is cause wank.

Yeah, he do what he wants to do, but this outfit would cause serious issues. Probably not worth the risk of getting heckled by congoers, possible staff, and definitely anyone outside the con. I mean, who would want to be "that guy"? It's a recipe for being infamous.

>>6488671

If you really insist on wearing it again, the uniform itself may be offensive but won't be nearly as much as any Nazi or SS insignia. Though in a completely objective light, it's a historical representation and inherently, it's just a uniform. But skip the swastikas.

Also a good idea to research the con surroundings. Are there Holocaust memorials or synagogues nearby? Is the convention happening on or around a Jewish holiday. To avoid a repeat of certain incidents in years past, if you're going to do this, at least make sure you're not being completely ignorant. Still insensitive though, and not worth the shitstorm.

It's your call, but just be prepared and don't make it worse than it already is (no Sieg Heils)
