So, for my next con I'm going to be doing 2 fairly open back costumes, and I have a (rather large) tattoo on my back between my shoulder blades. Normally its covered by my clothing or wigs, but one of my costumes has a short wig that doesn't reach my shoulders. Should I cover up the tattoo with make up, or just hope the photographer covers it with their magic wand in photoshop? Normally showing my tattoos wouldn't bother me, but its a ball gown so I feel like the tattoo might look a little vulgar. (pic related - its my tattoo)

Also, general cosplay related tattoo thread?

What reality do you live in where it makes a difference whether a tattoo is good or not? It's still trashy + tasteless as fuck, and aside from that, there are a number of other reasons top-tier modeling companies rarely hire girls with ink.

You'll just have to have someone stand behind you and work on it for you, since I doubt you'll be able to reach well enough.

On a different note, what is the basic consensus here on getting tattoos as part of an emotional healing process, or for a cause? I know it's kind of pretentious, but in my case getting a tattoo helped me a lot with something I was having trouble dealing with.

I don't have a tattoo, but scars I got from years of physical abuse from my parents and they're in really obvious places. I used to feel like a freak because of them, but after years of therapy and incredible patience from my new family, I have learned to accept them. I had spent years lying about them to people, citing an accident, but now it almost feels good to tell people honestly about their origin. For a long period of time, I was thinking of getting tattoos and I'm still thinking about it.

So yeah, for some people it's for the best to get a tattoo and I really understand the things you've been through. Even if they were different from mine.

Stay mad bro. You'll find in the business world that most people don't give a fuck about tattoos or piercings so long as they're not offensive. Sure, if you want to be a model or kawaii idoru then tattoos may hold you back but honestly, employers don't care about them now as much as they did 10 years ago. They used to specifically ask if you had any. now it's just a case of them hiring you and THEN saying "oh yeah, any tattoos? Cool, as long as it's not a naked nun getting fucked by a cross then we're cool". An employer most likely would never say that but hopefully you get what I mean.

That's actually a big part of why I got it. I got to the point where a big part of healing had to be uncovering the truth. It's also for my grandmother, and other women in my family who went through the same thing. A lotus was a good way to describe the women in my family, because we "hold our heads above the water no matter how murky or deep it gets." I must sound incredibly obnoxious to talk about it like this, but you're right. When people ask me about the tattoo, I bring up the abuse, and it makes me feel a little better. It was a big healing thing for me.

I think there are a lot of similar things you can do without tattoos, though. To me, that worked best, but I've met girls who wear specific jewelry, keep their most noticeable scars uncovered, etc.

Don't quite agree with trailer park trash though some tattoos are dreadully stereotypical (a butterfly? On your hip? Aren't you so unique and special!)

But they should acknowledge that people are going to judge them for it. Pro tip, you're altering yourself and therefore look DIFFERENT from the majority. Much like how people will judge you for how you dress or your hair style, you will be judged for tattoos and piercings.

Are they more accepted now? Sure. But there's a stereotype attached to them that a lot of people still see. Girls with lower back tattoos are tramps, people with tattoos on their faces or hands are probably not people you want to do business with, etc.

Just accept it, you're making a life choice, there will be consequences you may not like. You may be passed over for jobs that want a more "professional" look about you, people will make assumptions about your intelligence or other aspects of your personality, and guess what? You go into this life choice KNOWING that is how people are viewed with those alterations and therefore can't bitch when you make a dumb choice.

But enjoy those fairy wings on your back, or the stars behind your ear, you unique little person.

Getting a tattoo is a choice, do it up. But expect some people to judge you on it, is what I'm saying.

I'll never tell anyone to NOT get a tattoo. Get it. But don't give a shit if someone else doesn't like it. It's YOUR tattoo, the only person that has to like it is you. It's people who give such a metric shit that other people don't like their tattoos that bother me. Mine are hidden because if someone doesn't like it, I don't want to hear it. If I ever got one on easily visible skin, I'd be ready for comments on it both negative and positive and I wouldn't have a fit if someone didn't like it, I would just tell them that it's their opinion and I respect they feel that way.

>>6460718
Never said you have to be unique or have a good reason for it, but you gotta expect people to pass judgement.

My first tattoo was spur of the moment and has no meaning past "My sister took me to her friend's parlor and said pick something I'll pay for it". I've had people who've seen it ask about it and pass judgement, and because I don't give a shit what other people think of it, it doesn't bother me when they don't like it.

tl;dr people are going to judge your tattoos, stop caring so much, or if you give a shit, get them where other people don't see them unless you want them to.

So you think there's no such thing as stupid tattoos? You approve of every tattoo you've ever seen? You've never looked at one and go "jesus christ how drunk WERE they?"

To me, a tattoo is not inherently a stupid choice. A stupid choice would be getting a tattoo of a penis on your arm and wondering why no one will hire you. Or a shark on your forehead.

A stupid choice limits you in life. Sure, you can probably find a job SOMEWHERE with any tattoo, but it does limit your options depending on what it is and how visible it is. A neck tattoo of a swastika, for instance, is probably a stupid choice.

You just sound like someone who's been judged on what many view as a stupid tattoo and are butthurt about it.

Better than flippin' burgers, yo. Suppose you're a manager of your own firm then huh? Wanna compare e-peens? Look, I'm not saying it's worth bragging about, it's a managerial position though like I said so my point is that people with body modifications can progress in a professional environment. I've only just turned 21 and I fully intend on progressing upwards in the company -and- getting more modifications.

I fully accept that some people don't like them and that other people love them. There's no point in trying to justify why people get tattoos, that's not what I'm trying to do. It's personal choice. If you put enough thought into your tattoos and get them done by someone who knows what they're doing then why the hell not? The piercings are just a vanity thing. My experience with courts is that you need to look professional in that you aren't going to go to court looking like you're a. going to the club. b. going out to see your friends. c. going out to cop some drugs from your dealer.

At the courts I go to, it's professional attire at all times if you are presenting. Do people have tattoos? Yes. Do people have piercings? Yes.. but generally you take them out for court if they are visible. I've gone to court with purple hair (done nicely, mind you, up in a neat bun) without an issue.

Most judges are not going to give a shit if you have a tattoo on your hand since they aren't there to judge your choices, they are there to judge at whatever the case is at hand. But again, that's my own experience, and I'm in court on a weekly basis.

>> No.6460870

>But give me a reason of why it is a stupid choice.

Not that anon, but:
- your tattoos can turn out like OP's
- people like >>6460820 will judge you and that WILL hurt your career opportunities
- by going out of your way to modify your body, you automatically push yourself into the "special snowflake" group, which can limit your circle of friends to other special snowflakes
- additionally, well-to-do men are usually pressured to avoid alternative women, so you are relegated to the bottom of the barrel when it comes to the dating world. If you don't believe me, take a quick look at /r9k/ and see how even shit-tier men react to girls with tattoos.

Tl;DR: yes, you will be judged whether you have a tattoo or not. However, getting a visible tattoo, or piercings, or what have you, is a poor life choice because it will ultimately decrease the quality of your life in crucial social arenas. Most people already recognize this fact, and while the special kids think their tats make them deep, the rest of society finds you retarded for putting yourself in such a position.

That's because most of them are trying to make some spare cash for school and college. I don't know what it's like where you live but the employees at Starbucks here are usually students. Same with bar staff. I never see the same barista or bar tender working in my usual places for more than a couple of months, and they're all about the same age as me. I've been working customer service jobs since I was 16, I got my first tattoo when I was 15 and first piercing when I was 16. No job has turned me down over my physical appearance because I'm not some unhygienic slob with mouldy tattoos and piercings. In fact I've only been rejected for jobs when I was doing my degree because I wasn't flexible enough in terms of hours I could work for them.

I find it interesting that you don't think people in the upper class are judged, it's the same petty world that you live in. Money is the only difference.

As for the "type of man" I've found, he's everything I've ever wanted. He isn't some kind of "bad boy". He doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, and I honestly think it would be funny to imagine him at the bottom of any barrel. He is intelligent, shares in my hobbies, and he's treated me better than anyone else I know. I don't see why I have to prove anything to you, though. It's my life, not yours. You're probably also thinking that there is no way a decent human being would want his "woman" to have a tattoo, but he went with me to get it. It's dedicated to survivors of sexual assault and child molestation, and I will never regret it.

I'm exactly where I want to be in life. I've dedicated all of my time to volunteer work. I do everything from hosting children's events at the local library to mentoring teens, to helping at the ASPCA and the women's shelter. and I have a lot of fun with it. I also write, volunteer for political causes, and take time for any art or hobby that I take an interest in. My life is exactly what I want it to be, and I'm happy with it. Once again, I can't see how any of this really matters. You can name call and quote freshman-level political science all you want, but it isn't going to do anything to me. I'm not going to go home, and decide that my husband must be the worst kind of human scum because he doesn't find tattoos repulsive. I'm not going to suddenly decide that the meaning behind my ink is less important than what a stranger on the Internet thinks, and I'm not going to wither into a state of self loathing at the thought of all the other things I could be doing with my life.

Unless you plan on being a CEO or go into some line of work where professionalism is a life style (i.e. sales jobs, client meetings, etc) then tasteful tattoos are always fine. It's a simple fact that people care less and less about tattoos as they become more common. So long as you avoid the face (an extreme that nobody appreciates), aren't offensive and can look/act the part you work for, it's fine.

As far as cosplaying with tats, which is the point of this thread, I say don't even cover them. You're already destroying the chance of looking EXACTLY like a character when you get them, so show them off. Fan tats are appreciated, and good ink is always a plus.

Perhaps it's just that the Army has different standards of tattoo acceptability, but the most 'professional' ncos and officers I know have tattoos. My captain does, my first sergeant does, nearly every nco I have any level of respect for has a tattoo. These are the men I'm deploying with so I sure as shit hope the number of tattoos they have doesn't directly effect their professionalism.

All the tattoos I've seen on here are shit. As an alt girl who works corporate, yes tattoos can ruin your life (just as anything can). When I cosplay or am doing anything out in public I cover mine up with tattoo cover.

I don't think they honestly make your existence worse though. It's all a matter of taste and opinions

i have two tattoos but theyre on my back and ribs respectively so nobody ever has to look at them.
This is the one I regret though, because I got it for a character but they changed a lot. Also the purple ink faded in like three weeks.

Jumping on the bandwagon late, but my CIO has tattoos. You can see them often when she wears pumps with her pantsuit. I'm pretty sure the CFO has them too as he seems like the type, though I've never seen them.

I also live in the north east, which although is less conservative about your religious status, is generally considered one of the most conservative parts of the country when it comes to business.

Tattoos will generally impede your ability to get a job, but if you're good at what you do and are generally clean cut, have manners, and are well spoken- you'll find a job.

Tattoos are only trashy when you're trashy and don't care how they're placed and don't get them from a reputable artist. Just like buying a suit from walmart will make you look cheap. (except tattoos are for life.)

I'm in school right now. I want a tattoo of a double helix down my arm for some reason. I think it would be cool, particularly at the end if there's some sort of artsy rendition of the DNA unravelling and replicating along my shoulder and upper chest area. It would mean I'd have to cover up when I go to work, but that's fine with me.

I can see how easily fucked up that can get though. I can barely draw as it is, and describing it to a tattoo artist only to get a shit job forever is terrifying

This is why you ask them to draw it out beforehand (and look at examples of their work). My friend went into a tattoo shop with a basic idea of "bearded skull" and the artist came up with pic related.

Do any of you seagulls have experience with laser tattoo removal? Does it leave scars and is it really as painful as they say it is?

I like tattoos that are from something but in a subtle way. People will only get it if they've seen the show and it also can stand alone as something.

I just recently got a tattoo and I have mixed feelings about it.
The design is great and the art is amazing but I'm not sure about the spot, it's on my hip bone.
I'm going to visit my boyfriend on christmas and even though I showed him pictures and said it turned out great I'm afraid he won't like the way my body looks now because of the tattoo and I feel very insecure. So far I've ony gotten positive reaction towards it but I'm afraid my boyfriend will not like my body anymore. He likes tattoos, but he hasn't gotten one yet.
Any sort of experience with this?

Well since this is a tattoo thread I need some help.
I want to get tentacles on my back and have the ends wrap a little around my side.
Problem is I can't find any pics like this. I drew this up real quick as an idea but I can't draw for shit.
Does anyone know where I can get this designed? Or know of any pics that could work for it?
The only tattoo artist I'm able to go to didn't really draw it how I like and hasn't gotten back to me with revisions. Maybe if I had some better pics to show him he'll get a better idea of what I'm taking about.

Except if it's the kind of tattoo that is literally in your face or badly executed. I think it should be ok. Even if he doesn't feel very amazed by it, I don't think he will "not like your body anymore". Because, somehow, tattoos soon become part of the person, and the entourage gets oddly quickly used to them.

I want by all means to get a tattoo. But I have no idea where. I don't want it to be visible and I want it to be small. Alas, in my field of work nobody cares /at all/. Lots of my professors have visible tats, some of them even have full tat sleeves. And they are still great professionals and people still go to them. And yes, I'm at a field that deals a LOT with people, talking to them and convincing them we're right. But it's also a field where people go to professional congresses smelling like shit (literally)

>> No.6470295

>>6470287

Which field are you in? It sounds awesome and not uptight at all, and I'd work in it even if it had mediocre pay. Sounds like you get to work with a lot of people who are passionate and don't give a fuck about appearance.

Veterinary. We work with animals and animals don't care, but we also work with owners and... Well, they don't care either.

Though I had a professor that insisted on giving us a class on "how to look professional", which included everything from wearing a suit on all occasions to women not being allowed to have more hair-do than a ponytail or wear make-up at all. Then we talked to other professors about it and we all had a good laugh.

Though I suppose it may be different depending on the country. But pretty much everyone I know that works with exotic or wild animals has tats, most of people that work with cattle too, surgeons have a lot of them as well... It depends, but it's generally accepted.

If you want something small and non visible the foot is a good place, that way it can be visible when you wear sandals etc, but not at work in prof. attire. If you're looking for anything bigger you have pretty much anything covered by normal clothing, back, chest, stomach, upper arm legs etc. and if you're feeling really adventurous the inside of your mouth. I've known tons of people you wouldn't guess/realize they had tats until they go swimming or something so you're not really that limited space/place-wise tbh

I've got multicolour hair, a few small facial piercings, stretched ears (though reasonably small) and 6 large, visible tattoos and I work as the front desk receptionist at a pretty well respected/reputable organization. My bosses have been pretty good, thankfully the CEO is a bit of an artsy type and likes my 'style', so I don't think even if somebody else hated it they would get very far. I thought maybe they were just tolerating me because they couldn't fire me just for my appearance or something, but I recently got a great review, a big raise and some extra hours too.

No, I'm not saying well-paid receptionist is the pinnacle of employment, and no I'm not saying I'm ~so unique~ - just pointing out that in the right environment, nobody really gives a shit and you can be judged on your own merits not just your chosen aesthetic.

More on point, I guess...OP - dermablend for cosplay for sure. I think it wouldn't look "bad" but certainly out of character unless you were cosplaying biker Wonderwoman.

I like this idea. Seconding asking someone from deviantArt. I had a design done up by a deviant artist that I took to my tattoo artist, who then polished it up further. It helped that all 3 of us were big fans of the subject matter.

Do you really want someone you can't trust to make a design you like to permanently etch something on your skin? Really that should be sending alarm bells ringing.

Tattoo artists generally have a certain style when making their own designs, and that style isn't what I want.
But any half assed tattoo artist can copy an image, unless it's something like a picture of a person. Those barely ever come out right.
So I will get it designed by a person whos style I like and then have them tattoo that.
Also I didn't say he was a bad tattoo artist, I just don't want him designing my tattoo because I'm picky about the style.
There's nothing wrong with making sure your permanent tattoo comes out how you want.

>> No.6475096

>>6474412

DIfferent artists have different styles. Not every one draws the same way, therefore if two artists were told to draw the same design, it would look different.
I've drawn all my own tattoos and not every tattoo artist has been able to pull it off exactly how I want because here's also then the matter of their skill at shading, etc. So it's important to pick someone whose work you like, even if they aren't technically designing it.
