Hey /cgl/ ive got an opinion question. I'll be doing a Mom Lalonde cosplay for AUSA this year, but I have a problem with white making my skin look weird. I just don't pull off blonde well.

I really don't enjoy the look of zentai suits heads for the guardians even if they're technically accurate, so I was thinking that maybe instead of that i'll use white makeup. Just completely white out my face/neck/hands and then do the regular black eye/lip makeup on top of that. Sort of like a mix between guardian and normal human.

Do you think this could look good, or do you think it's a bad idea? I personally think it'll look fine but I always try to get a second opinion on these things.

Her prop is awesome but that's it.

Her symbol is too dark and her glasses also look a little dark, her horns are too close together, her makeup is a little dark too, but on the plus side it looks to be applied well and evenly. The waist down is totally inaccurate.

Minor thing I sometimes notice with troll horns mounted under the wig: when horns with are flat-out placed over the hair, instead of parting the hair to mount the horn and then moving the hair back to hide the base of the horn.
Yes, I do appreciate that you're not using a headband over the wig! it's only a bit distracting to suddenly notice that there are apparently chunks of hair that vanish and reappear from under horns or that the shadows/curves don't quite line up. Picture related insofar that the Summoner seems to be the only one with covered-up horn bottoms. The Psiioniic's horns are definitely sitting atop their wig, and the Disciple's hair is too long to tell, but the left horn looks like it's flattening some of her hair and the bases are evident (might be wrong about her).

I don't mean to specifically criticise the depicted cosplayers (after everything is said, I do and still adore this picture and seriously admire the craftmanship in all the outfits!!); this just happened to be a high-quality photo with clear horn mounting examples. Also it's early in the morning and I'm procrastinating on a paper.

Style your wig. You don't have to replicate the canon sprite spikes perfectly. Layer it, make some parts, create some bangs - whatever. Just define the shape of your wig so it's not a round, grade-school Bieber blob. In the "dave-strider-cosplay" tag on Tumblr, you'll find Daves with unstyled out-of-the bag wigs.

Granted I'm not the best seamstress myself, I have to say that this looks really nice overall. The design itself is not hugely flattering, no, but they're doing their best to make it translate.

Think of all the terrible Porrim dresses that have been around lately. Now look back to the Rose photo. That's light years ahead of the Porrim dresses, regardless of whether or not you like the design.

Actually not! She did a pretty good Seer of Light (picture related) and she has a few cosplays under her belt, so she knows her way with fabric and a machine. If you look at the bottom of her WIP skirt and the weird shoulder ridges, they look very neatly constructed (ie the curves aren't puckering, and things are laying mostly flat).

I think, though, that synnesai just isn't particularly competent at designing for anyone with a more fleshed-out figure than a willow tree.

What grey makeup are you using? It looks a *tiny* bit too dark imho--but that might just be the lighting.

Your bangs are looking a little mallratty and aren't too accurate--I'd restyle them. Also, Terezi's hair flips out, whereas it seems your wig flips in--that's a pretty easy fix though.

I'd also advise you to maybe lessen your eyeliner--you're quite pretty, you don't need as much as you're wearing! Line the top lid, then maybe take an eyeliner brush and lightly line your bottom lid with dark eyeshadow without going all the way around your eye.

Of the three prominent "fancy" designers (Rumminov, Mookie and Synne) Rumminov is the only one who really understands what she's doing. What I really like about her designs is the character she invests in them--Kanaya, Aradia, Terezi and Vriska all have COMPLETELY different god tier designs, but they all really work and relate back to the character's personality/their heroic role. Plus, she knows how to draw proportionate people. Synne and Mookie, on the other hand...their designs all look kind of the same, really. JRPG-looking stuff from Synne and giant ballgowns and/or cluttered J-fashion from Mookie...for every single character. The same elements over and over again.

This. The FF comparison is spot-on, too, and made me laugh. I don't know if she realises that trying to keep something at hip-height (where she drapes a lot of her chains and sparkly, dangly things) is KIND OF DIFFICULT. Even if you sew the drapey hip thing to your clothes so it won't fall down, you still end up walking weirdly to compensate for the unevenly-distributed weight. Bad hip stuff yo.

Went to her blog and the Rose looks appealing. I'm primarily a Jade cosplayer, and while the Jade design has some neat elements (planets tucked into the hat band, red accent sleeve lining), it overall feels a bit too Madoka-y for me.

Not the worst out there, but I'm not feeling it. As an outfit in art it's certainly cool, but I feel like it wouldn't work very well as a cosplay.

As it's been said, the symbol on the hip doesn't fit with the outfit. Generally you're going to want it on the chest. I feel like the red accents could work if they were tied in better with the outfit.

You've got the red on the had an a splash on the chest, but from the waist down it's nothing but grays and blacks.

The bows in the back are cute, but three seems to be overdoing it. Big bows in real life are very limp and floppy unless you get something starchy or have a way to reinforce it, so three would end up as a weak mess.

Maybe do one bow instead and try to tie it in with Kanaya's sash she has? I realize her sash is part of her normal design, but it could help bring things together along with accentuating the waist and making it more flattering for the cosplayer.

If you hadn't self-posted and wound up here, I think everyone would be a lot harsher, but the main things:

-Your fangs appear too long for your mouth.
-The wig looks all wrong, and it's really shiny/ratty.
-The lipstick isn't dark enough.
-The base makeup seems too dark, but more importantly, there's no contouring whatsover, making your face look flat. You have to make more of an attempt at makeup than just a grey wash all over your face.

Hey, what kind of experiences have people had with Epic Cosplay wigs? Because honestly...I ordered a black wig from them for Kanaya and I am really disappointed. It has that awful, fake, shiny look when seen in the sunlight and though it's supposed to be heat resistant, styling it on a low setting has made the bangs a bit ratty. I got a blond wig from them before and it was alright. I never tried styling with heat, though. There were some thin spots in the back and the netting showed if you didn't part the bangs just so.

My advice would be to take photos of the wig and post about it on tumblr. Tag it 'wig review' since I know there are wig blogs that track it, and they absolutely will reblog your review.

When it comes to the up and coming wig places like Arda, Epic Cosplay, and Match Wigs, there's such an overwhelming response of "THESE ARE THE BEST WIGS OMG" that the people with bad experiences get drowned out.

None of these companies are perfect, and their wigs are more or less just a step above shitty ebay wigs.

look up the homestuck cosplay help board on tumblr they have info on every type of body paint you can try. Ben Nye is the most popular, but don't just buy the regular grey, it's too dark. Get either a grey and a white to mix, or spend a little extra and get the ben nye foundation makeup in corpse grey, it works lovely.
Also you need either sealing powder or baby powder, and a sealer. Ben Nye makes a great on, but if you're going to be a cheap ass hair spray kinda works.
The cosplay blog will be a huge help to a new comer though

As a fictional character, Porrim doesn't need a bra for support. However, unless you have fake boobs, there's no way you can get that full, rounded look.

I know there's that tape kind of bra, but a lot of people are probably hesitant to put tape on their boobs.

I'm all for push up bras when the other result is saggy tits. Even having small boobs doesn't mean they're guaranteed to be perky.

I don't know that there's much to help with? It's basically a shitload of armor, and there are ample resources around for prop armor using all kinds of materials and finishes and stuff. I hate to say "just Google it" but that's literally all you need to do here, along with drawing plans for the different pieces and sizing them to your body. I might suggest wearing a zentai suit underneath to give the illusion of a carapace and save yourself the trouble of doing body paint on your wrists and neck and stuff, but that might make the costume more bulky and prone to overheating. You could try wearing as small and non-intrusive jewellry as you can, or covering them with something like nude pasties, a bandaid or even one of those thin cotton wool pads taped over the top. Or you could also take some of the suggestions in this thread for wearing nude or non-intrusive bras for Porrim. I know that I've never been significantly disturbed by seeing transparent bra straps worn with a revealing top, and it's something that can be forgiven for hallway photos and easily edited out for professional photoshoots.

Having a strong, masculine body type would be the most aesthetically pleasing, but you can cosplay anyone successfully as long as you put a decent amount of effort into the costume itself. Paying attention to the horns and skin colour is half the battle won with Homestuck, seeing as a lot of the characters are just plain shirts and pants. You can amp up an Equius by having accurate stripey stockings, maybe making yourself some prop wrecnhes/tools/robot parts, possibly shading a blue blush into your makeup if you want to pull off a nervous/embarassed look. Details will be your friend here, have the cosplay as accurate as possible and nobody will care if you're not six feet tall and ripped as hell.

God Tier might actually be a good option, if you don't have the broad shoulders and chest typically assigned to Equius you can pad the shoulders and use the wings to give you a more imposing presence. I'm making a Kurloz (yeah I know) and I wanted to do applique for the bones. In my spandex/vinyl scraps stash (who DOESN'T have one of those?), when it comes to fabrics I have enough of in white, my options are shiny white 4-way stretch PVC, matte/leather look 4-way stretch PVC, and white spandex with embedded gold glitter. I'm really trying NOT to fabdazzle this up too much (although my purple boots are shiny), but... do you think either of the PVC options would work? I really don't want to spend too much money on new fabric right now, and it'd be nice to reduce my "weird stretchy shit" stash.

The fandom default for shorts is spandex right now, which looks alternately like he's about to go for a nice jog or (with the looser fits) that he's wearing a purple diaper. EYEBROWS. You are not afraid to accentuate them, and the effect carries over well in your phone picture.
Your horns look alright placement- and shape-wise, but I can't tell if they're on a headband or under your wig.
Fins look cool in the bathroom picture.

I recommend you either make/buy fang dentures or use tooth black to give yourself pointy Meenah teeth. The shark-like smile is pretty characteristic of her depictions.

I ordered the Dental Distortions Gremlin fangs but they're very.. idk bulky? and make my mouth bulge out weirdly, so I'll either try to refit them, or give tooth black a shot. I hope I can make them work though since those things are pretty pricey.

Any advice on making the trident btw? I know I can use a wooden dowel as the base but I'm not sure what to make the ends out of.

Look up some tutorials on how to use pink insulation foam. The stuff works wonders. My friend made hers out of that and a dowel and coated it with about a million layers of mod podge and gesso; then spraypainted it. I've also heard that spackle works well to make it hard; I'm going to be experiementing with that to maybe use on my Ahab's crosshairs.

Just make sure you take your time to sand it!! It's really easy to work with but if you don't put a lot of work into sanding it's going to look like shit.

For Halloween, I'm wearing my Sollux horns as a part of my costume, but no wig. (While I love getting dressed up for the holiday, I don't want to be seen as an obvious cosplayer. So I'm just wearing horns, glasses, bifurcated pants, and a grungy Hero of Doom shirt I made while playing around with bleach stenciling.)

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions in regards to mounting the horns onto a headband (or any other way without a wig)? Most headband mounters just put the horns next to each other, and it's horribly inaccurate and it looks like shit in general.

TBH, I prefer the gangster Meenah kind of look in cosplays. I think with the stylization of the comic you can get away with your design, but you definitely need to find boxers that match the symbol better and redo the paint job on your horns. Also, yeah, try to find some more accurate glasses.
Honestly, the 'gangsta' design is the best thing about your cosplay, your looks and costuming aren't really good enough otherwise to make your cosplay stand out as something high quality.

The breasts would still be a huge hindrance though. Even if you have small enough tits to open-bind, LE's coat pretty much just hangs off his body and ruin that plan.

The only way it would work would be if they airbrushed a binder or zentai suit, and I honestly don't like how that looks much of the time.

I think a 100% accurate LE cosplay would probably be the hardest Homestuck cosplay to pull off.

But if a female-bodied person managed to pull it off, I honestly wouldn't care.

The biggest problem I have with female-born cosplayers is how many of them don't fucking try to look like a guy. Just getting a pair of guy's pants can make all of the difference. Even if your "headcanon" is that Dave wears skinny jeans because he's a hipster homo pansy, there's a huge difference between lady's pants and guys pants. (Plus guy's pants tend to have giant pockets, which is always nice during a con.)

Wheelchair, most definitely. Cosplay isn't worth potential pain and suffering, and you can always step out of it for a few minutes for photos if needed.

Just be cautious with it, as you don't want to have a rouge Tavros try to run away with it. I've seen some immature Homestucks view wheelchairs as nothing more than props, and may not realize you're actually injured and need it.

I'm honestly scared to wear my Meenah costume again because I have a crop top (I'm sorry I love Meenah a lot but her design really is boring.) and "too short" rat tails and I know I'll get noticed on here after my next con because of reasons.

The thing is, I do look good with the crop top (I try to work out before cons also, so I don't have any sort of unfortunate pudge whatsoever, but I'm skinnyfat naturally) and my braids are short due to not being aware of other resources for long wig fibers. I didn't want to do that thing where Meenah's just messily braid in more fiber, because it doesn't look good imo and I'd rather have nicer looking braids with inaccurate length I guess.

I've expressed these concerns about inaccuracy to all of my friends but they've pretty much told me "do it anyways, your cosplay looks good as is."
