It is a calling. I don't care if you work barmitzvahs and birthdays, or sold out big-top shows, being a clown is not for everyone.

Fun fact: Even some of the top paid RB&BB, Big Apple and Cole bros clowns, still only make as much as a career cashier at Target or a high end grocery store, but because housing, insurance and medical is provided, they tend to have more disposable income.

Googled "pinnochio nose prosthetic". five seconds in google. Use sculpy to make the end pointed, and paint blue with the same facepaint you're using.

I AM a carnie. My family on my Maternal Grandfather's side is all circus and carnival folk, focusing on sideshow (my main act) and clowning.

Be objective, and don't lie to me now: was he an asshole, or did you let yourself be a mark? Did he scam you, or did you simply fell into his game? The big one is, will you still go to a carnival again, and enjoy yourself?
I am not defending you getting fleeced by the guy as something thats OK, and my folks are better than that...Im not though. I'm a stage artist, so I don't work a box, board or beat, but if I need money, and creative talk can mean the difference between $2 and $20, I'll aim for the ducat.

Any tips on how to make eyelids look sunken it, as though the eyes are missing?

bulk up around the eyesockets with a little bit of nose/chin putty. When you do the makeup, shade on a gradient that is very slightly darker in the middle, than around the edges. This creates a forced perspective.

I don't deal with children anymore, unless im donating my time to the Shriners (even then, im usually doing sideshow). Kids tend to love me though. I follow Bozo's three rules though:

1: GET ON THEIR LEVEL
Kneel down. Look them in the eye and don't loom over the kid. If you are showing them that you are "with" them, they respond better.

2: TREAT THEM AS A EQUAL
Don't talk down to them. Don't treat them as lessers unless you need command (such as an emergency etc). Use small words, and introduce larger vocab slowly and graducally. Be their friend, and they will be yours.

3: WHEN ALL ELSE FAILS, RETREAT
Some people don't like clowns. As I have mentioned many times here, fear of clowns is both natural, and fairly hard to reverse. If they kid is overwhelmed by you, GTFO.

Water based makeup is useless except for facepainting crowds. Sweat is water. The air is mostly water vapour. Even with the best sealant, it will smudge and run. Avoid.

Figured I'd be best asking here rather than anywhere else.

How on Earth would I go about making the "crest" for an Asari cosplay? It's looking pretty fucking daunting and the terribad cosplays I'm seeing everywhere aren't helping. I know it'd have to be a cap of some sort but I can't figure out how I'd make the actual crest or how I'd avoid having a stupid "seam" where the cap ends and I begin.

Latex bald cap+ tapered foam latex tentacles glued to said cap, and painted with latex paint.
The seam is dealt with though 1:spirit gum to hold the seam attached to your face, and 2: proper makeup application. If there is still a seam, use a little latex putty to blend it in.

If you feel you must. Its actually cheaper and easier than you think. Cut sheet foam-latex, glue to baldcap over a form the size of your head. Paint with latex paint/fill in gaps with expanding latex foam. Done.
