so many cosmetic additions "reclassify" a firearm as an NFA item, which imposes restrictions on distribution and modification not just ownership of said itemretriactivel,. NFA violations are felony criminal offenses and are more serious than most people would assume, so modifying your AR into looking like that epic super railgun laser full auto minigun will turn you into a felon, because the ATF hates fun.
it's too risky for the venue and organisers to let people cosplay with such because of that.

even with cons with metal detectors it only protects those inside the detectors, not outside. given that there's lines and shit somewhere outside, or crowds, there are plenty of targets.

you can also socially engineer your way inside with a gun even with a metal detector. it'd be pretty hard to do that with a long gun, but handguns, easily. although you could probably get in with a sbr or breakdown gun if you absolutely had to.

The problem with this is that toy guns are usually not as heavy unless you spend good money for a realistic replica. Metal and everything.
This also means that people who somehow smug them into cons likely CAN'T DROP THEM, so they are forced to carry it all-day. Also because leaving something like that unattended raises the possibility of some who picking it up and trying to pull the trigger for fun without knowing any better. Also, a gun nut could likely spot someone with the real deal and suddenly a stupid decision for personal fun turns into an entire event being evacuated because someone thinks there's an eventual shooter right in the center of the event.
