Hey, rare thread topic!

It's both but for something to go really over the top, it needs unpredictability. Stuff that sounds gay to an outsider (or anyone sober, really) but funny as hell at the time. For that, you need the right kind of people, which many con parties are actually lacking. That's obvious when you notice party people weren't on the floor in the day or vice versa.

There's tons of possible answers here. I'll stick to one and say it's the time I checked every floor until I found the only party in the house, and it was hosted by a gull. Not too surprising thinking back

I was thinking of bringing a little portable speaker for some meme music, but if I decide to use it I'll definitely keep it on the quieter end, that's definitely a good tip.

Nah, Fanime actually. And then again during AX next month. Just trying to finalize some of the finer details to maximize me and my pal's fun. As the resident con vet they expect me to do all the footwork, for better or for worse.

I plan to bring some people-friendly video games since I knew a few of my buddies are going to want to play some smash or nidhogg or something. I just really want to make sure everyone's has something to do to encourage people to have fun and converse.

Dang, and I heard that's one known for partying. I've been trying to see about AX but it's not looking very likely.

Also some parties definitely do have games, but it's actually pretty rare. Jackbox could definitely work since it's a make your own fun kinda deal

Strategy guide option is joining Discord groups or checking in here. Instruction manual option is just be cool. Cheat code is recon and look out or large groups hauling beer and / or food. Of course, be aware if there aren't cool people where you're going (i.e. a Comic Con) or it's not at a convenient spot (ex. big downtown center with no hotels attached) there may be not at all.

If it's actually a "Comic Con" and not something anime related, don't expect any partying at all. Their crowds are not into that

labelled booze if you have dispensers, good amount of mixers and booze choices, enough room for people to stand and put drinks down (suites are better for this, close off the bedrooms), some low music on in the background so people can still hear eachother, garbage bags easily accessible

Me and friends host room parties. Doesn’t have to be a hide suite, but a living room and bedroom is idea. We know one guy that always gets a penthouse. So we mostly host there. We just buy as much booze as we can get in the car. So we don’t make people bring anything. But some do anyway.

We invite people we think are cool and make sure they are over 21. We end up making great friends that way.

Craziest thing to happen was Star Wars cosplayers came to the room and before we knew it, mostly everyone started making out with each other. A Rick cosplayer pulled out his dick and said I’m pickle Rick out the window.

It's amazing how bad some people are about this, and they're usually the "normal" ones. Watch when they play the sleep-inducing rap and then follow it up with some meme or anime song for some very interesting results. Almost as if people don't wanna hear the same generic shite they can get at every club on Earth or something crazy like that

After God knows how many con parties since lockdowns, I can probably count the openly druggy ones on a single hand. Yes, even weed

I love the booze and social aspects. With the right people, you can make friends for life. I stumbled into a room party at a con and now my hotel plans for that con are intrinsically linked with them.

I've never gone to con parties before since I usually don't hotel for cons, but I have a few big ones coming up that I want to try to party at.
Any advice for joining parties? Is there etiquette like BYOB? Is it weird to join strangers, do most people just stick to their own groups?

You don't have to stay in a hotel to attend a con party. Keep in mind, the standards are different depending on what kind of venue you're in and it's actually way harder at a lot of the "big ones". For advice

I meant that I usually just commute to my local cons so I never stay late enough to party, even more so if I'm driving there.

I'm also curious if people just hook up or make out at parties? Is it not awkward if your friends are there too? Or do people just slip away for privacy? I'd like to be prepare but I also know there's no way my friends would let me leave a party with a stranger like that lol

Fair enough though you might honestly have better luck (for a number of reasons) at these local ones. I can say that pretty definitively after doing that just this past weekend.

The sex part absolutely does happen but really not that much, at least in the open. I can also say I have made out with people while friends are around and vice versa, it's usually not a big deal. Also are these friends trying to protect or get in the way?

I'm a petite girl and a lightweight, and directionally challenged even when sober, so my friends always keep a strict eye on me. They'd probably call the cops if I ever slipped away without notice at a con in a foreign city haha

But I'd also feel really awkward trying to give them a heads up....

Don't really do the drop in con parties most do cause it isn't really my thing/ they get busted a lot by front desk

Meeting up with friends particularly if i'm the one travelling

Randomly volunteering for being bartender is always an interesting experience if you find yourself in one with a kitchen/bar, especially if you brought in stuff to make more interesting mixes/drinks

Don't host one out of the back of a uhaul unless you're ready to basically run a con within a con among many other things, pretty fun if you pull it off with the right people though

It's a good kind of party con when you skinnydip on night zero, and that's considered "taking it easy"

Always have water, always have ice, always have booze and some type of music. Be polite and invite your neighbors and inform them of parties ahead of time.
