What makes a good convention party for you? Is it just the free booze? Meeting new people?
Do you remember any fun things you've done at a con party?

My hotel room is going to be the base of operations for some con shenanigans and I want to make sure I can keep people entertained. What do people who've hosted parties small or large have to suggest?

Hey, rare thread topic!
>Is it just the free booze? Meeting new people?
It's both but for something to go really over the top, it needs unpredictability. Stuff that sounds gay to an outsider (or anyone sober, really) but funny as hell at the time. For that, you need the right kind of people, which many con parties are actually lacking. That's obvious when you notice party people weren't on the floor in the day or vice versa.
>Do you remember any fun things you've done at a con party?
There's tons of possible answers here. I'll stick to one and say it's the time I checked every floor until I found the only party in the house, and it was hosted by a gull. Not too surprising thinking back
>My hotel room is going to be the base of operations for some con shenanigans

I actually spent some time looking through the archives to see if anyone had asked a similar question and came up mostly empty. I figured it'd at least be a topic of interest for some people.
>Keep the music to a minimum, if you play any at all. That's when trouble starts
I was thinking of bringing a little portable speaker for some meme music, but if I decide to use it I'll definitely keep it on the quieter end, that's definitely a good tip.
>ACEN?
Nah, Fanime actually. And then again during AX next month. Just trying to finalize some of the finer details to maximize me and my pal's fun. As the resident con vet they expect me to do all the footwork, for better or for worse.

I plan to bring some people-friendly video games since I knew a few of my buddies are going to want to play some smash or nidhogg or something. I just really want to make sure everyone's has something to do to encourage people to have fun and converse.

Me and friends host room parties. Doesn’t have to be a hide suite, but a living room and bedroom is idea. We know one guy that always gets a penthouse. So we mostly host there. We just buy as much booze as we can get in the car. So we don’t make people bring anything. But some do anyway.

We invite people we think are cool and make sure they are over 21. We end up making great friends that way.

Craziest thing to happen was Star Wars cosplayers came to the room and before we knew it, mostly everyone started making out with each other. A Rick cosplayer pulled out his dick and said I’m pickle Rick out the window.

It's amazing how bad some people are about this, and they're usually the "normal" ones. Watch when they play the sleep-inducing rap and then follow it up with some meme or anime song for some very interesting results. You don't have to stay in a hotel to attend a con party. Keep in mind, the standards are different depending on what kind of venue you're in and it's actually way harder at a lot of the "big ones". For advice
>have a costume
>be outgoing
>look for people who "seem the type"
>Check their Discord server / Facebook group / /cgl/ thread if it's popular enough
>Just straight up ask something like "Heard anything cool happening later tonight?"

I meant that I usually just commute to my local cons so I never stay late enough to party, even more so if I'm driving there.

I'm also curious if people just hook up or make out at parties? Is it not awkward if your friends are there too? Or do people just slip away for privacy? I'd like to be prepare but I also know there's no way my friends would let me leave a party with a stranger like that lol

Fair enough though you might honestly have better luck (for a number of reasons) at these local ones. I can say that pretty definitively after doing that just this past weekend.

The sex part absolutely does happen but really not that much, at least in the open. I can also say I have made out with people while friends are around and vice versa, it's usually not a big deal. Also are these friends trying to protect or get in the way?

Shameless bump (since not my thread) to say: You can probably be a little more adventurous with music choices since the people are gonna be a bit weird, even if they're neurotypical by con standards. Unless it's a real stick in the mud, almost anyone will appreciate a break from the boring standard club shit. My favorite example of that was instant conga line at full speed after the sudden shift from Drake (?) to Mario 64 Slider.

Going funky is always a good choice too

Both. Most con parties I attended were with friends and friends-of-friends, but I attended a couple with strangers that I met at late-night events and they were a blast.

>Do you remember any fun things you've done at a con party?

I'm a fan of the little moments. One time a friend of mine brought a beer bong that we chugged red wine with, and I challenged this girl that I was flirting with to give it a go; she couldn't handle it and blew wine all over another girl's mostly-white cosplay.

>What do people who've hosted parties small or large have to suggest?

1. Play anime shit instead of generic club/party tunes.
2. Unless you have a suite, keep the attendance to a "manageable" level.
3. Do NOT let the loud motherfuckers get going.
4. Even if you tell people to BYOB, make sure you're stocked.

Meeting new people is 99% of the fun of room parties, free booze is something that only matters to broke ass college students and underaged's.

A good convention party usually has
>good people
interesting to talk to people are key. you want peeps that have cool interests and are willing to talk about em. boring mfs that don't talk to anyone who are just there to drink booze are a net minus. they don't have to be extroverted, they just have to be willing to talk about whatever niche interest they have. creeps need to get wheeled out asap as well
>good lighting
lights on is lame, lights off is too dark, some ambient lighting (LED floodlights for example) is key
>good music
no music sucks, you want at least something ambient. bad music is the biggest reason why parties die. you want a mix of nerdshit and normie music, accounting for the avg age of the people at the party

people are 100% the most critical element, a party without interesting peeps to talk to will die very quickly
drinking games are a cool icebreaker but not required. video games (e.g. smash or mario kart) are optional, but I personally think they aren't great. too few players at a time for it to be worth

i don’t know, because i’ve been going to cons for years and can’t get an invite due to wearing lolita. tip to egl anons: cosplay if you’re serious about partying. wearing the fashion makes every retard who goes to cons for the party scene automatically assume you’re some kind of frigid prude.

The room party I attended that I remember the most was at colossalcon Prime 2019. It was the big gay Kevin room. First when you entered the room you had to take a drink from some kind of alcohol concoction that was in a skull. Everybody drank out of the same skull as if it was communion at the Catholic church. Big gay Kevin themselves hand poured the drink into your mouth and your lips had to touch it. The room was really full like it was one of the sweets or combination rooms I guess and there must have been a hundred people in the room. Shoulders shoulder. And then all of a sudden big gay Kevin gets up on a chair and starts screaming that everyone needs to chant along with them in the Chant went
>SUCK HIS DICK
>BEAT HIS ASS
>SUCK HIS DICK
>BEAT HIS ASS

Aside from that, the the room parties I remember most vividly were those were just so they really unexpected happened. A leak, fire alarm, random Pizza appearance. Just enjoying being in the moment.

Tip for bringing alcohol to a party of strangers.
Get some standard vodka or decent tequila in an amount depending on how many people are there. If it’s more male dominant then you can probably bring some beer or cheap whiskey, if it’s more female then consider wine or flavored vodka. Seltzers and low proof liqueurs are good for people taking it easy or new to drinking. If you feel like it brings mixers like OJ, coke, or sprite. Have plenty of water on hand in case you don’t want a massive hangover.

Please don’t buy it all yourself, split the cost up. If you’re partying with Asians (particularly Koreans) or just want to try something new and good, see if you can get soju.

I used to throw big parties at a nerd school full of antisocial dweebs that wanted to party. I found that having social activities and free drinks was the most important thing.

Mix up a big sports pitcher of jungle juice. Use an everclear or vodka base and fill it with either grape/orange/pomegranate juice (strongest flavors to cover the alcohol) and some kind of mild carbonated drink too (carbonation makes alcohol digest faster or some shit like that). Use 1-2 bottles of booze and just keep adding shit until it doesn't taste like alcohol. Cases of 40s are the other cheapest way to get drunk. Buy cases of Olde English and drink them down to the neck and fill with OJ to make Brass Monkeys to make them more palatable and hand them out to share.

For activities, I always had a hookah rolling surrounded by 3 couches. Have a box of sanitary tips for sheepish people. I also had a TV area with a quick multiplayer game like smash bros ready to go, and two beer pong tables. Play 6 cup with quick playing house rules so the games go faster and more people can rotate through. It's easy for introverts to talk to other people when there's situations that force them to interact with other randoms in a low effort way

As the host I would always walk around and talk to everyone and introduce myself because I had social clout, and introduce them to other people around them to foster conversation. Especially people that look like they're not having a good time or not taking to anyone, get them to join a game or play something with you. Don't have a pong partner? "Just ask anybody dude they play with you let's go!"

Also, have music everywhere. Adjust the volume throughout the night to keep it loud enough that everyone can hear it but keep it low enough that people can still converse. If you have a space for people to dance find someone to be the DJ. Change the playlist throughout the night to match the energy level.

Also if people are causing problems pull them aside and tell them to stop doing X early, and if they don't kick them out. Nothing kills someone's vibe quicker than a very negative social interaction and it's your responsibility as the host to make sure everyone has a good time.

If it's the type of party where you expect hookups, have a quiet, private place out of the way that only your bros know about to get hot and heavy, and if it's not tell them to go find a car or alley.

I've never actually been to/been invited to any kind of party save for normal shit as a kid.
I'd like to go to something while I'm at Colossal Texas next month.
Is there anything I should do or look out for to be invited to something, or is it just going to be a matter of luck/chatting with the right person?

Most of the time its chatting with the right person. You could just ask randoms drinking in the lobby where's the party. But if you seem like a weirdo, you're gonna get shunned to the con rave where a bunch of losers just toss a beach ball around, 6 feet apart.

If you already have you own friend group, you could try to start you own party. Its not to hard too bring people to a party if you have at least 1 or 2 friends with some clout.

you need a hypeman. a throwaway party game on like wii bowling, one two switch, nickelodeon smash bros. some music playing doesn't have to be super loud but just have a vibe going that's going to make interesting people want to engage. I've literally just gone to room parties for years at magfest if you're not a spaz or even bring drinks your so in. I met some cats just by looking through the window and doing the drinking sign langauge. They were like
>yo bro you trying to drink?

>What makes a good convention party for you? Is it just the free booze? Meeting new people?
For me it's always the people. I'm not someone who goes parties to find a con gf so honestly a sausage fest isn't that bad if it's all dudes.

>Do you remember any fun things you've done at a con party?
One of my childhood friends is a OF cosplayer so after the big herd at last year's colossal I went back to a room party with her and a bunch of other slags. She was trying to get me laid the entire night and I had to have pissed off at least 10+ slags by telling them that mocking them for their presumed body count. Also found out that rejecting these girls only makes them want you more.

>My hotel room is going to be the base of operations for some con shenanigans and I want to make sure I can keep people entertained. What do people who've hosted parties small or large have to suggest?
Been the host many times and honestly the only thing that keeps people entertained is other people who are sociable and alcohol
