TLDR What do I do if a seller refunded me the money for a dress even though the dress arrived in great condition, without telling me the reason why they refunded??
I bought a dress off of LM about 2-3 months ago from a seller with over 50 positive feedback, no negative. The dress was shipped and delivered and came as described, I left them positive feedback and confirmed with them that I received the dress.
A few days ago, they refunded me the full amount. I didn't get a message from them, so I messaged to ask if it was an accident and let them know.. no response, they haven't even read it.
What the fuck do I do? I don't feel comfortable spending the money because they could ask for it back. But considering they either haven't noticed that the money is gone and haven't bothered to message me, I have no idea what happened. I'd say it was an accident, but if it was, I feel like they'd immediately know.
Is this potentially some kind of scam or way to fuck me over (i.e. 3 months later they ask for it back, I say no, they leave me negative feedback)? First time this has ever happened to me and I don't know what to do.

When a lolita sits down in her dress, does the back end poof backwards so that her ass is exposed to the seat/ground, or does it come forward and act as a layer between them?
What are the proper techniques and positions lolitas sit in to properly deal with the extra poof and what I'd assume structure a lolita dress has that would make it poof while sitting.

Are you the person from general? Either way, no it's weird to just let it bunch up behind you when sitting in a chair. When you sit down in a chair you're gonna want to push the dress down a bit towards the back of your thighs as you're sitting down. On the ground/floor, it's fine to have it flare out behind you.

most of us wear either tights or bloomers, which would prevent bare upper legs from touching the chair or the ground anyway. As for those who don't wear tights or bloomers, I'm pretty sure 99,99999999% of us wear some kind of underwear that would prevent a bare ass touching the chair/ground. A petticoat (or sometimes hoop skirt) is what gives a lolita dress or skirt its poof.
You can google what lolita petticoats look like and what they're made out of. Visit the melikestea website.

If i’m looking for whether or not a taobao brand is good or not, I like to consider 1. Is the price a suspiciously low number? Are there any review photos if the price is suspiciously low? And 2. How consistent/original is the brand? Does the brand have a ton of different crap on their store or does the brand have its own original style?
If the store has reasonably priced items (not dirt cheap or unreasonably high for taobao), and the brand is unique in their style, then I’d say go for it.

If you really want to check for quality, you can go onto Xianyu to see if there are any secondhand listings where sellers photograph the skirt worn or laid out. Not all listings have personal photos bc sellers fear them to be stolen but it might help give you the general idea of what the quality is like.

I hope this helps :)!

And yeah taobao can be confusing… (saging bc this is kind of off topic) I personally don’t agree with recommending it to beginners because I think the only reason people rec it to newlitas is to get cheap “starter” pieces. I’d personally rec LM and secondhand burando to a beginner bc better investment imo. However i appreciate lolitas like you who genuinely look for unique pieces of quality on Taobao and don’t just use it for the low price points. A lot of great, unique stores on there go unnoticed because they aren’t dirt cheap.

There are some Bodyline shoes that I like and want but they haven't been available on their website for long time like picrel, yet somehow are on taobao. They usually have default "review", just the default comment, not written by actual customer with a picture. Can I trust them?
In general I have been wondering about the Bodyline shoes on Taobao. My shoes from the actual BL site I have had for years and they are in great condition and all, I'm very pleased with them. I have one Taobao pair of supposedly BL RHS and desu I haven't worn them, they came stinky as hell (the glue smell I guess) and it put me off. The shoes I had from the original website didn't have such smell. What's the deal with supposedly BL shoes on Taobao? Old stock? Used-to-be supplier selling independently? Just replicas?

Hoshibako Works is a Chinese lolita fashion brand that opened their online shop on Taobao on July 30, 2017.
https://hoshibako.thebase.in/p/00001
"We have our own factory and a mass production system with highly skilled craftsmen". They now have several physical shops in japan. What you will find in their shops (both online and physical) is their own brand products and they also sell other brand's products. Sort of like atepie also selling other brands in their shop.

If you're making it to wear for yourself and not making it to sell, then I'm fine with it and I'm sure most people would be fine with it. It's a bit like using brand patterns from the GLB to make your own stuff. It's okay as long as you're not doing it for profit.

People judge it when people buy design replicas and rightly so, especially when the original dresses are still abundant on the 2nd hand market. 99% of old school design replicas are replicas of btssb dresses. And most of the current btssb design replicas are shitty babydoll knockoffs.

anyone have any resources or advice for making a custom print? I'm mostly confused with what dimensions to use for the canvas and how to make it look like a seamless repeat. this is for a lolita dress if it wasn't obvious. also I assume I'd need two different prints - one for the skirt (it'll have a border print) and one for the bodice. is that correct?

you don't need different prints. If this is a border print then the border is near the edges of the fabric. Pieces for the bodice are cut out of fabric near the middle of the fabric, where the border print doesn't reach.

doesn't that leave a lot of wasted fabric especially if the skirt is quite long? the only lolita I saw who documented her custom print to dress process did a separate print for the bodice so that's why I assumed that.

>> No.10858683

>>10858655
There are certainly different ways to approach this on a small scale, but all of the information I've seen about how brands produce border print dresses is that it's just one fabric that they get printed and they cut it like I described in the earlier comment. I'm not sure how wide their fabric is, but for most fabrics available to us the width is 140cm (or 70cm folded). I assume all border print dresses use a rectangle shaped pattern for the skirt. Factoring in at least 1cm seam allowance and depending how close the border print goes to the edge of the fabric the maximum skirt length that can be made from that width of fabric is 66~68cm when two pieces are cut simultaneously by folding the fabric, with little to no fabric waste. If your skirt length is longer then you're going to need a different approach. For example by unfolding the fabric in the middle and cutting your pattern in a single layer, but twice. This will cost you twice the length and waste the border fabric on one side.
I have no idea how brands get around this. It could be their fabric is just wider, it could be they're getting another bolt made with just the base print (and not include the border), or it could be that they're just okay with the fabric wastage because for larger scale production fabric cost is such a small % of the overal price of the dress.

On a small scale you could get around fabric waste by getting blank white fabric printed in such a way that only the pattern pieces are printed and the rest of the fabric in between is left unprinted. An example of what that looks like is here: https://youtu.be/Bjgm094Imx4
Some print shops will do that for you. There's online options too. Another option would be to print one length of fabric, with one section on the fabric having the border print and the other only the base print. Of course you need to make sure there will be enough of both areas to get all of your pieces cut.

>> No.10858686

>>10858683
thanks anon this is a very detailed and thorough answer. I appreciate you taking time to type this out. I couldn't find much information in terms of border prints by googling, especially info related to lolita, so this is really helpful. so far it sounds like the last option is best since I'm only making one dress - seems like printing one length with the border print and one with the base would be most cost effective and least wasteful as long as I know the exact amount of fabric needed.

As for storage advice;
-put some stuff into it to keep the shape (paper towels or rolled up towels)
-store it in a way that it doesn't touch other fake leather. Some people advise storing it in a cotton pillow case, that way you can put your bags quite close together without them actually touching
-store it away from sunlight
-do not hang it by the handles

Care products for fake leather bags exist, there are some that mostly act as a sun screen (because sunlight degrades fake leather faster) and you have to reapply it once in a while. Someone gave me an amazon link for it so that's where I would look first. I never ended up buying it so I don't have any experience with it.

Shit advice. When are people going to open their eyes and realize pleather has a shelf life? The tips you gave will only delay the inevitable by a little bit.

>> No.10862513

>>10862506
The advice was given to delay the inevitable, not to make them immortal, so it was good advice on how to care for synthetic leather items people already own or are considering purchasing. I prefer real leather but nearly all of the shoes and bags lolita brands release are not real leather. If you want a certain design the only choice you might have is synthetic leather or nothing.

Nearly all of my synthetic leather brand items did survive over a decade without cracking/peeling despite regular use. The one that didn't was second hand and had some peeling before I received it.
Some of that is attributed to the way I store and handle them. The factors that I don't control are the temperature, humidity and also the type of synthetic leather that was used so you might claim I got lucky. They have some signs of wear and age (loose threads but those can be trimmed, some yellowing of the pinks and blues) but that is to be expected with synthetic leather.

So what's your advice other than tote bags and the few real leather brand bags out in existence?

What kind of synthetic leather are yours? It would be nice to know since there are a few kinds. If it’s the soft pleather type, that’s the one that peels like a motherfucker. If yours are PVC, they will last for much longer and won’t flake. It might discolor over time.

Tote bags are fine, as are PVC bags.

Most of my bags are the same kind of fake leather the AP Jewelry Ribbon Boston Bags were made from, it's the thick, smooth, sturdy, plasticky feeling stuff.
The pages of my bags on lolibrary do not say what type of synth/fake leather they are.
I have an IW bag from 2015 that was peeling/cracking very slightly when I got it (second hand, undisclosed), the structure itself seems solid but the outer layer feels thin and fragile. I have prevented it from getting worse so far but I will not be using that bag very often because I expect that once the cracking/peeling has started it will easily get worse with normal handeling.
I wish there was some kind of protective sealing product that could be applied on top to prevent further peeling, but I've never heard of such a product.
I have a non-lolita fake leather bag that I've been using every day since 2017 that still isn't cracking/peeling/flaking. It claims to be PU and has a softer, more flexible, textured appearance that emulates real leather. You can still feel that it's not real leather though.

I only have one dress, and I am happy with the quality, but I would not compare it to AP or Baby. I hang it with my ETC dresses because it feels more like otome than sweet lolita. The cut is less detailed, and the materials are less impressive. There are no pockets, no zipper (just full back shirring), no shape to the waist ties (but they are removable). But there is nothing wrong with it - the fabric isn't plastic-y, the lace isn't scratchy, the seams aren't coming apart. It's just not as grand and fancy. Even my AP special sets have more going on - textured fabric, a pocket, more lace, more bows. I think the simplicity is actually what keeps it from looking tacky like some taobao designs can get. The less they try to accomplish, the less chance there is to fuck something up.

a chemise is a cotton or linnen dress that is historically used as underwear. Worn under the corset it protects the wearer from lacing and boning marks from the corset, and protects the outer layers of clothing from sweat and body oils.
A chemise would be very unpractical for most lolita outfits. If the goal is to protect the clothing from sweat then a simple form fitting cotton undershirt or sweat guards might be a good option.

platform heels specifically (not just platforms). Indeed OTKs. And buying shorter dresses and skirts so they're at the right length on you.
If you're worried about it there are some cotton dresses (without prints) that can be shortened in the skirt part in a way that is reversible. It will depend on the dress.
It also helps to maintain a slim figure, this will help with the visual width to height ratio.
There might also be some things you can do with your camera, such as the height of the lens and the distance of the lens in relation to your body, that will make you look taller in pictures.
Cropping pictures in a certain way can also help.
How about building some height on top of your head with a hair accessory? A bonnet might help if the brim stands up. Or one of those headbows with wire in them, so you can shape them. Some hairstyles also have more volume up top than others. Bumpits were a thing in lolita fashion for a while in the past.

besides, this just encourages the newfag mindset that you can just get bangs and call it a day. your hair needs to be styled, bangs or not.

There is always at least one style of bangs that flatters your face shape. There are many styles of bangs, not just straight across blunt cut bangs. There are bangs for round, square, heart shaped, oval, etc, shaped faces. Only the people with the most angelic looking faces can possibly pull off lolita without bangs and no face framing pieces. The large majority of people will look bad in lolita without bangs.

I wondered this too. Turns out a lot of people simply misplace them. Some people also don't use waist ties for several reasons so they just take them off the dress, throw them in the back of the closet and forget about them, and then sell the dress without the ties. They're also pretty easy to damage because they can get snagged on something, the buttonhole can get torn, etc.

I would say this is some kind of vision by the designer, but it doesn't align with what japanese and western lolitas aspire to. If customers don't want to emulate it, is it still lolita fashion? Do you believe that anything a brand does is representative of lolita fashion? The brands that I've seen doing this are classic brands, yet nearly all of the japanese classic lolitas I've seen in the last 15 or so years have bangs. Even though bangless styles with lolita were sometimes seen in street snaps (usually very young people dipping their toe into lolita) and in hair styling tutorials for those who couldn't or didn't want to commit to cutting bangs, bangless styles were and are still not considered ideal for lolita. Actually go and look at that GLB hair and makeup special issue, you'll see more than 9/10 of the lolita hairstyles have bangs of some sort. You should read these books/magazines yourself instead of repeating what you see and read online.

Looking for selling experience on LM these days, please.

Doing a giant closet cleaning and I have a shitton of tasteful style but meh quality offbrand from the pre-taobao days (ie BL, F+F, Anna House, a bit of indie western etc) as well as lolita adjacent-brands like axes to get rid of. Is there even any point to listing it on LM/Keimarket for absolute peanuts or should I just dump it all at my local teeniebop secondhand store/charity shop? >> No.10869568

>>10869554
since it's mostly not sweet it's going to be a bit harder to sell (smaller market) but I think it's worth it as long as you price it fairly. Stuff from Anna House, F+F, In the Starlight (you mentioned western indie) and Bodyline will probably be easiest to sell. I'm fairly certain you won't have any problem selling these as long as your asking price is lower than the original retail price. I personally wouldn't want to buy "lots" (a batch of similar items being sold in one listing, as one unit) but new lolitas might. As for the process of the work that comes along with creating listings, you can make that a lot easier on yourself if you streamline the process and do all of the garments in one go.
Get one garment, take pictures of it, do the measurements, take notes about the state of it (damages, stains, it might be worth it to try to remove the stains), then do the same thing to the next one, etc.

Take your measurements (bust, waist, maybe shoulder and arm circumference) and look for pieces based on that. You should be a few cm under the dress measurements, and waist ties and corset lacing can make your dress smaller too. If your clothes are still too big, you can have them altered smaller which is much cheaper than the other way around. mary magdalene, VM, and moitie run smaller than brands like AP and Baby, and then older releases from pretty much all major brands generally run much smaller than modern releases. how small do you need exactly?

if all else fails, it's extremely easy to have a dress taken in, especially if it's unshirred. professional is ideal but it's simple enough to do yourself and easy to undo if you screw up. some dresses can also be modified to have a corset tie on the back, but that's definitely work for a professional

>> No.10871099

>>10871094
keep in mind that if only one number is listed on a measurement (as opposed to a range), that's usually the max bust, not the min. most shirred pieces will absolute accommodate sizes significantly smaller than the max bust, and you're expected to have 2-5cm of space allowance anyway. ergo, a 10cm difference may be only 5cm too big. this can be filled out even more by the layering involved in lolita, ie blouses, undershirts, and so on.

additionally, many dresses (particularly OPs, which usually run smaller than jsks) are designed in a way that being slightly too big will only make it look cute, but it depends on the cut and fabric. avoid stiffer fabrics that may lay weirdly when not filled out properly.

another trick can be to utilise cutsews. many cutsew pieces are designed with a smaller min bust size because they're intended to stretch. they're also sometimes made with thicker fabric than blouses.

tldr: you aren't too small for lolita by any means, you just need to try on some items and see what works on you.

I have these socks in different colors and they all feel like cotton. They might have a small % of synthetic fibre for extra stretch, but they're very breathable so I expect everything except the cuff of the sock to be 100% cotton, and for the cuff to have some elastic fiber/thread in it to stay up. Sorry, I don't have the tags. They're on the thin side (summer friendly, but still opaque) compared to btssb's princess drop embroidery socks (the ones with the stripes) and a lot thinner than old school AP socks (which are very thick). These socks are also very stretchy so they can accommodate longer legs and bigger calves, but sometimes I do see these socks on people with bigger/wider legs and the lace can look a little flat (the lace itself isn't very stiff because the weave is very open, so they don't have much volume, but also because on bigger calves the gathering factor goes down). The toes and heels are also finished in a very smooth way (no big lumps/bumps at the seams) so these are very comfortable imo.
If your legs/calves are normal or close to normal in circumference I'd recommend these socks wholeheartedly. If you have very wide calves or legs are very wide just above the knee then the lace might lack the volume/oomph and I suggest buying just one pair to try out or going for another brand.

Depending on where you saw it, it might have been Glittertale? This suit is one of theirs and since you can customize things, they might have made it in a lavender tartan? If you look at their fabric options on FB, there's a lavender and black plaid, but it does have pink in it as well.

Tysm for such a detailed response, anon! Sounds like they might be a decent match for me. The reason I initially posted the question is because I find both Meta and IW socks to be made of very scratchy acrylic, so Baby OTKs are my last glimmer of hope.

I recently received an old Meta bonnet and can't for the life of me figure out how to make it look decent. It's velveteen, has a pretty wide brim and droops in an awkward way on the sides. The brim isn't wired, which is odd considering the weight of the fabric. It also has a very hard time staying on the head, if I tilt my head back it just slips off like a hood. Am I doomed to look like an idiot and eventually sell it, or is there something that can be done to fix these issues? This is my first time wearing a bonnet this large, so I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong.

I have the same problem with an old Meta velvet bonnet as well as an Antique Beast bonnet. If it weren't for the fact that these bonnets do not fit my giant noggin, I think it could be fixed with some steaming and reshaping. I've considered making small cuts into the back to make it larger, but this process permanently damages the bonnet. They've been sitting in my closet for a while.

if this weren't velveteen I would iron it to remove the crease (it was folded down the middle at some point, which is why there's a peak when you wear it). I've never worked with velvet or velveteen but I heard treating it like broadcloth and ironing it can ruin the pile if you don't have a needle mat, so I wouldn't do that. Maybe someone in the sewing thread can help out.
To prevent it from slipping you can always sew wig clips to the inside of the bonnet. I've done this to some of my hair accessories, even 2 berets. https://www.amazon.com/Magic-Gold-Seams-Needles-12pcs/dp/B01LXJ2N2A

in doing some reverse searching on pink house clothes, i came across a website that seems to be selling various secondhand items at a discount. it's set up similarly to mercari, but all sold by one party, i guess, but the photos of the items obviously have been taken by different people. it seems really weird and like a scam? when i did yet another reverse image search, i get a handful of other jp websites that look like consignment stores but with weird, nonsensical urls.

anyone come across these type of sites before? what's their deal? is someone just scraping mercari listings to make $$$?

lower priced human hair clip in bangs are like 20$ online (I have 2, they are 100% human hair, I've tested them) but I've never seen any sellers that sell those within that price range that sell color swatches.
What does >>10872160 want to spend on them? I'm assuming the bangs from sellers that sell color swatches are a bit more expensive than 20$ but I could be wrong.

I actually have a cosplay blouse with short, puffy sleeves, and it doesn't look great, for more reasons than that though.
I've been pretty dumb about buying the blouse, I ended up making the mistake of having too much puff, and it makes me look enormous. At least it gets a bit better when I break it up horizontally, but ideally I should do more, I'm kind of toying with the idea of somehow sewing in the puff, it looks much better when I push it in you see, but that may not be a realistic idea.

As for the petticoat, I've mostly been looking at Aurora & Ariel, and I'm thinking I may have to go with an 8m one, it seems to be the best overall.

I'm pretty tempted to just buy the standard sizing, but I'm really too fat for it and it'd be really uncomfortalbe if I can even fit it, but getting it custom sized would be so much more expensive and complicated. But it'd be a waste to buy something bad, so maybe I'll just have to cough up the money. But it's so much more expensive, it'll add so much in taxes and fees if I can't order through Aliexpress.

I am that anon, to clear up any confusion I recommended buying in a real store (instead of online) because getting a color match is so difficult. The online options I have seen and bought from were around 20$ for human hair bangs and they did not offer color swatches so that's why I suggested buying offline unless you want black or bleach blonde bangs. I don't know at what price point for bangs online sellers start offering color swatches, maybe you do in which case some suggestions would be welcome.

imo 40$ isn't a bad price for human hair bangs imo if it means getting a good color match. I'd personally be willing to pay up to 75$ (knowing there are much more expensive bang pieces than that) because I want it to look good/blend with my hair and I know it's something I can use for years if I take good care of it. 40$ is small change compared to what I spend on lolita. And if you are a cosplayer I'm sure that's not a cheap hobby either.

for lacemarket... how long would you wait until filing a dispute on paypal? it's been a little over three weeks since i bought an OP and my messages are unread. i did expect delayed shipping, but i never received a specific date on how long it would take. as a chronic late shipper, i get it, but coming up on a month is a little much, right?

>> No.10872715

3 weeks is definitely too long of a wait with no communication whatsoever. I say open the dispute now, because even if they do end up shipping your OP, a seller like this will be nothing but trouble all the way through. I ended up in a similar situation years ago as a newbie, was a pushover and waited for the seller to be done with her travels (fully undisclosed, discovered this later through her social media) and received a JSK that looked like it'd been used as a floor mat, sent in a dirty shoebox.

Most flattering lolita appropriate cuts for broad shoulders/inverted triangle?
I'm thin and tall (5'7, 115 lbs, BWH 31/27/35) but was cursed with man shoulders (wider than my hips) and all the mainstream fashion advice about flattering styles for broad shoulders is cuts that would not be appropriate for lolita (sleeveless, neckline too low, etc) and also large collars and puff sleeves just make my shoulders look even bigger.
I stopped wearing lolita and sold off my wardrobe a few years ago because I felt really insecure about my broad shoulders making me look mannish but I'm trying to not to let my insecurities hold me back anymore.

I saw on IG a girl using like 5 pettis to get maximum poof, but I imagine it would feel awful to have that much pressure on tummy. Trying to figure out if the stacking option is viable versus buying a monster petti from melikestea

I would suggest not using cardboard if they’re going in a garage, because it’s not airtight or waterproof, and could be susceptible to bugs, the elements, etc. Are you able to use plastic storage bins instead?
