I wouldn't call this doom posting as touhou events in the US have been disasters in the past, and because of it there should be some level of skepticism expected. I hope it's something that can be a consistent con but I don't hold out much hope. I've been hearing about this con "coming soon" for years now and the site doesn't provide me with much hope as to what to expect at the event.

The biggest reason for me skipping this is that I don't live in LA, trying to convenience my friends to come to this to split the hotel and gas bill to drive down is not happening because they don't see any reason to go outside a larger touhou meet than cons. It's too hard to justify for myself to divert what I could spend on Sakura con or Fanime or even AX to go to this with no real spotlight reason. I mean, excluding Instagram cosplayers the biggest name on that list coming is A-One...

What killed attending this con for me in any real sense of hype or enjoyment is the fact it's in LA. For a con of this size it was impossible for me to convince any friends from out of state to fly in, drive down, and spend the amount of cash needed to split a room, pay LA prices, and go to what essentially is a 2 day convention and that's being generous given the schedule released. The owner has constantly refused to put his foot down into any and all women and "women". Which pissed off a lot of potential invites as those who had actual sound logic were brushed off for instagram thots or "my lgbtq community' shit.
Staff has been 100% unmanaged basically anyone anywhere could make any rules what so ever because in a bit they probably would resign anyways, then come back, then resign. There is/was no PM on this event
Everything, and I mean everything, has been done a dollar late and a day short. Hell for something this small? the event schedule should have been done months ago but they knew shit was fucked.
Behind the curtains isn't about what you know, it's 100% who you know. I get this at cons it happens but this is blatantly orbiting that I can't forget I saw.
The staff and "team" has been so inner-fighting that they scared away a lot of people simply because any mention of them or and "off color" humor jokes they made was considered a no-no. Like some people went as far as to dig up others facebook posts or discord messages from years ago about trump or the mask mandate and scream that the person was a pol anti-gay nazi or some shit.
The staff consists of 80% people who only cosplay and "played the game" see: Yeah I tried it once at a con for 5 minutes. 19% people making a statement and 1% another vendor who's actually just said fuck it and going who I suspect is >>10851307
The owner has been giving handouts to anyone with a female card it's almost insulting to anyone actually trying to attend or help the community for this con.

My experience:
I went both days. Military Utsubro was the best. Maid Nue being stolen was scummy. Odyssey was great, sad he trooned out though. Also whoever the faggot with the hellcat was, don't come back. It's not impressive you got cosplayers to check out your car when they're underage girls who don't know how to say no. You know no one gave a shit about your car so you purposefully drove next to the line.

Did anyone see the reimu having a meltdown at the tam meet and greet? It was really cute. I asked for a picture with her and she asked for my name to personally thank me when I was walking away. I met up with my friend later and he said she was apparently doing that for everyone since he kept overhearing it.

There was a steampunk(?) Marisa in shades who was chill as fuck. I lurk her twitter and she was really cool to finally talk to. She was the hottest girl there by far.

There was an amazing Kaguya. Not sure if troon but he definitely passed.

Punder was nice but I dont get the hype about her.

This. The event itself was so much fun I could forgive the technical difficulties and whatnot. I'm sure staff at this point feels an extreme need to be on top of that for next year, so I have high hopes for 2024 being even better. The worst of it was a stolen fumo and one case of art theft, so I hope that kind of stuff is also better kept under wraps next year.

Touhoufest 2023 was the most fun I've had at a con since the early 2010s. I consider this to be a somewhat monumental feat in this day and age, since otaku stuff isn't really "niche" at this point. So cons like this are a blessing to say the least. People can actually connect over something that needs personal investment, which allows a real sense of unity to exist. I think that was one of the most important reasons as to why the con felt as fun as it did too, and it's what big anime cons lack now since people just come and go with that shit.

Suffice to say, Touhoufest blew my expectations out the water, as it seems that it did for many others too.

I went both days. For a 2hu event in the west, it was a humble wholesome time. I think the venue choice was perfect considering the expected attendee count (not huge, which is realistic) would make everyone congregate closer to each other, it's next to a beautiful Japanese garden (perfect Touhou photoshoot aesthetics), and there's plenty of other Japanese things in the nearby area. Only other typical SoCal con venue I can think of would be some random small hotel ballroom which would make it feel a bit generic, or some random auditorium/community center, which would feel kinda out of place.

All in all it was TAM and the other people that went that made it for me. It was nice mingling with other fans that are still enthusiastic about this series over on this side of the globe. Can't wait to go again next year.
