I was planning on making Sailor Jupiter for this year's AX, but I started my big girl job and haven't touched it an inch since buying the materials. Part of me is sad about that and wants to rush to finish it on time and another part of me just wants to say fuck it buy a costume for the interim.

>what you're planning to do
I went with a close group of girlfriends last year and it was such a great experience. I'm hoping I can pull them in this year too but the prices have risen and idk if it's worth it for them since they're slightly above normie in their passion for anime. My best friend will definitely go with me (and in costume) though so I'm excited about going with her atleast :)

I'm guessing what's happening is that they're going to offer a bunch of add-ons (limited qty) for the badges by splitting all the perks into single items. They will make more money by charging by perk (like autograph, priority sign up for an event, early lineup for x event on y day) AND know that some people will pay the money and miss the perk timing anyways.

How many years before AX becomes like SDCC where buying a badge is impossible and they get auto scalped by mechanical turks within seconds?

Last year's 4 days sold out two weeks before the event, but I'll chalk that up to it being post-covid and AX2022 sucking hard with zero guests.

Honestly I don't forsee it becoming THAT popular. AX is a great deal above other cons, but not to the level of SDCC where you're getting news on several upcoming blockbuster movie projects and tv shows, or once in a lifetime guests. Especially now that the bubble is popping on anime popularity and post-lockdown/mask activities, the crowd attendance will probably level out to its 2019 rates. Most people who went in 2021-22 had never been to an anime convention before and were making it their bucketlist event. Now that they've experienced it, I doubt a majority will return to AX. They'll probably fuck off to a cheaper con if at all.

I recently went to LACC which is held in the exact same convention center and the difference between it and AX is astounding. There was maybe 10% of the amount of attendees at LACC as you would expect to see at AX. There's a reason those pictures of everyone flooding the main hall prior to the con opening get posted on everyone's feed each year. There's just a massive amount of people who go.

To answer your question though: it depends on what you're looking to get out of a convention. If you like the industry, the ability to meet big names, or shop from big brands, then it's great. Some people feel that it's too overcrowded, too impersonal because of the sheer amount of attendees and lack of ability to congregate really anywhere except outside of the con center and therefore prefer smaller conventions to do so.

anime still being more of a young person's game means that there will still be lots of poor weebs and unable to immediately buy. so many people who waited til the last minute, got shut out, and then got scammed by people who prey on those desperate for a badge.

Hot take but here it goes.

I feel AX has become too big for it's own good. The merch is shit you can find at ALA, Fanime, Sakura con, etc. The ticket costs along with hotel costs are dogshit in value, you go to AX in the awesome summer heat only to get into a swamp ass infested convention center. Vendor hall merch is actually higher than what the same vendor might sell at a similar con because booth costs lol, very few exclusive merch vendors to pick from to justify the price. Panels boast big names but fuck me if I have to wait nearly 90 minutes in line just to get to a panel I can basically yt later and then listen to "ask the questions" to a VA/Influencer/whatever that are easily google-able answers. Music guests are what you make it though doesn't seem like Japanese guests are flocking to any cons just yet.

Even with room sharing, AX is kind of hard to justify in price as you can often knock out 2 other cons for the price of a weekend of AX in LA.

Which would be stupid because the only time the fire marshal got mad last year is day 1 when there was nothing to do so everyone was crammed into south lobby for the exhibit hall. Once the hall actually opened and people had space to move into it, the problem went away. People were also expecting to have to spend hours in the security line which is part of why they came early. Now that they know they don't have to, they won't all come in at that time and be packed in the lobby waiting for the hall to open.

The other issue is that anime fans are still a lot of broke ass kids who can't drop $145 immediately

Are the butler/maid cafes worth going atleast once? Never been to one at a con but I've heard there ultimate cringe but I wanna experience one
And will it be awkward if I go to the butler cafe as a dude?

>> No.10832500

>>10832490
Not at all. The butler maid cafes are not really an experience. They are glorified restaurants

>> No.10832597

>>10832490
not worth it. due to various reasons, they're nothing like a japanese one. convention ones are held in random panel room with some tables. you're at a big table with a bunch of randos, and you get 1-2 maids who are basically only there to facilitate some games between you and the other people at the table. your group doesn't have your own "exclusive" maid. they cycle around the tables. they do some cutesy dances a few times, you can take some photos at some point, and that's it.

food/drink is limited to basic stuff because it's not an actual place with a kitchen, but a panel room. the line is going to be long and don't be surprised if you barely get your drink by the time it's over.

i went to it for free a few times because i knew the organizer and it was still a waste of time
