How do I into dark flowing robes without limiting my movement? I plan on dressing up as a sith lord for a Halloween party, complete with a red dueling lightsaber. I just need to acquire edgy black robes, however I would like them to not limit my movement so I can show off some lightsaber tricks I know (unironically, also would be nice to feel comfortable for this possibly long night of partying). I'm limited to buying, but I am a terrible judge of products, especially since I'm exclusively browsing online. I basically just look at the first results on Amazon and I'm sold. To simplify my question, does anyone have a reccomendation for a specific website I should order off, or even a specific product I should look at? If it looks great enough I'll want to go to conventions with it too.

The makeup thread might be able to help with what would look best about your skin tone in relation to your undertone. From a cosplay perspective, I'd say run some tests. Imo I see blueish white or pale depending on your preference. Because the character has doll/robot-like ligaments and tattoos, you might be able to get away with a bodysuit or arm/body socks then painting your face and neck.

Look for projects either labled beginner friendly as the other anon said or that have these components:

Some projects that fall under this criteria are:

Also, the thing about sewing is that if it looks easy to make: it's probably more difficult than you think. A v-neck contradicts all of the points I made. It's usually a stretch material, has a higher level skill (ribbed knit binding), sewing curves, and setting sleeves. Don't feel bad for not getting it right, it's like an intermediate level project. It'll take some trial and error (as with every skill as a beginner), but it's possible. Tracing your own clothes is a great way to start. There's some really good youtube videos out there on the subject!

really stupid question since it would be better on the aliexpress thread if it existed, but I ordered from aliexpress for the first time using their standard shipping option and I couldn't quite find out what their exact delivery process is online, how does it usually get delivered (to the US to be specific), do they leave it in the mailbox (I ordered a ring for my cosplay so it's more likely than not to be packaged small) or do they deliver to your door, and if door do they just leave it there or do I have to sign for it, I don't want to have to go through a bunch of hurdles if they miss me if I'm not there to sign for it.

If you have a Spider-Man costume just swap out the mask for a realistic spider's head mask with pincers and 8 eyes, be Man-Spider. Easiest thing I can think of that has minimal work and is somewhat scary to kids, you could make extra arms too I suppose if you really want to add more to it and have free time.

I'm planning to cosplay as Ichi The Killer next year and I need some advice on how to make the shoes. The body armor I've already got sorted, just get some motorcycle armor and paint the 1 on the back (spray paint with stencil or tape, or use EVA cutouts and glue?).

For the shoes, It definately want that metallic look, so I can paint that, but the back blades are the tricky part. Because they are going to be a bit clumsy I was thinking it could be a detachable unit. I was recommended making the blade out of EVA and velcro the back part. But I want to hear other opinions and suggestions.

was gonna cosplay at MCM this month but that con is all "family-friendly" and I thought Ichi would be a bit innapropriate. Call this a cop out but I at least wanna try out a con first before I feel comfortable cosplaying.

You'd probably have to buy one of those zentai suit masks, then create a dome headcap out of EVA and/or worbla. This might clip in or be magnetized to the mask. Then you'd get some poseable wire and thread it through some plastic tubing like the other anon said with neon caps. You can probably find a hardware supply to replicate those, but if not: more eva and/or worbla.

That's how I'd approach it. Maybe a sheet of something sturdy sandwiched in between the EVA. If you're already adding the back heel part, I'd just glue it on there with contact cement.

Complete beginner at armor making here. I know how to make armor that follows my body's contours exactly (duct tape dummy -> pattern method) but how do I go about creating a pattern for a piece that isn't entirely form-fitting but also has a curved sillouette? Pic related is what I mean in an exaggerated form, the yellow being the outline of the piece of armor. I've tried padding the area with clothes or shredded newspaper and then making a second duct tape dummy over the padding but I can't get it to look nicely smooth and curved.

There's pattern drafting books, videos, and classes. You essentially start from some building blocks and adjust as necessary for your needs. For armor, you would build on top in a 3D-esque style for your needs. You could learn pepakura patterning for that and print out a flat pattern for your foamsmithing needs.

If you really wanna pattern draft, start with a bodice block and add a princess seam by cutting a line between the waist dart and the bust dart. Then, you need to redraw the neckline to the desired shape using your measurements. However, if what I just said sounds like word soup then it would be easier (and would produce better results) to use a pattern. You can use a shirt, vest, or dress pattern and just not add the sleeves or cut it off at your desired waist length so long as it has the princess seams that start at the bust (not the shoulder) and have a standard neckline (ie not v-neck, loose, sweetheart, or etc.). You could try adding padding to the interior of the helmet (think like a bicycle or baseball helmet) to help it sit more securely on your head. Mandalorian cosplayers do this all the time so there should be plenty of resources out there.

There isn't. You can only choose between the coat holding its shape or being flowy when you walk. You can achieve the flappy look in photos by having someone hold your coat up or by throwing the tails upward though.

You can flip the wig upside down and blow drying it. You’re essentially use heat to set the wig fibers upside down. You’re still gonna have to hit the wig with hairspray but it won’t be as crispy as if you needed to glue the spikes to a base.

depends on how large of a hat you have. how secure is it to your head the way it is now?
plaster of paris is generally light but of course if youre adding a lot of it on a big object, its going to weight it down a bit, or at least make it unbalanced.

personally i never liked the stuff, always ended up cracking on me at the end of the day. i used it for a "power rangers: the movie" style cosplay armor set years ago.

Not terribly if you're used to contacts. They feel a little thicker than daily wear contacts. Also they get a little dry after about 8 hours so eye drops help. MAKE SURE THEY'RE CLEAN BEFORE YOU PUT THEM IN YOUR EYE

Wash your hands before you touch them. Clean them with contact lens solution. Make sure they're the "right way" up and not flipped (there should be no "lip" at the top, Google images if you need to). There should be no dust or debris or makeup on them.

Once you put them in you will "feel" them when you blink. It should be an easy feeling to ignore after having them in a while.

They will not get dirty throughout the day, just dry. Nothing can get under them once they're in, and your body takes care of the outside. If you're planning to reuse them then clean them with the solution before and after each use.

If they're not clean your eye will get irritated. That simple. Either immediately or after a short amount of time. You may cry and blink them out or your eye will simply feel painfully uncomfortable.

A friend invited me to go to Anime NYC since someone canceled on him and now I have 19 days to do a cosplay I was thinking about for a long time.
The horns and cape won’t be too much of an issue, it’s the arm, shorts and belts I’m having trouble with. I won’t do the full dragon claw, just the retracted tail form seen when not in use. No idea how to attach it to my arm though. While I’ll be making it flat against my forearm instead of sticking it out by the two spires it does, I dunno if I should make one whole gauntlet for the yellow discoloration or use body paint and attach it on top of that
The way the shorts seemed like rolled up pants on the sprite led to me trying that myself, but it was too tight and killed circulation when it got over my knee. I could just go with the art shorts instead but I want to break up the otherwise monochrome color scheme with the clothes.
The belts, I’m just lost on. The one on the glove I might just omit, but the chest ones I have to do. Might be easier to make the one solid piece as they are in the art instead of the ringed buckles used in the sprite.

So me and my girlfriend are trying to make some shoulders from craft foam, but the pattern we bough off etsy is too small for me as Im a taller guy.
We thought just taking the patterns and upscaling them on the printer would do the trick, and we initially thought we did, but none of our registration marks on the inner curve of the shoulder line up anymore and it creates a really ugly seam.
Is there a reason for this? Is there a "correct" way you have to upscale patterns?

I am getting this costume custom-made. It's going great so far. I'm getting some lustrous gold silk dyed in an ombre to act as the lining for the cloak... it's gonna be tight.

HOWEVER, there's one part that's not straightforward: the character, Paimon, has sort of a disembodied lower face/neck below the mask. The face and neck just blend in with the lining of his collar. What's a good way to represent this character's neck/lower face IRL? I was thinking of suspending a semi-translucent grey veil from the white mask and having it go down to my collar. It would loosely hug my face to show a little contour. What do you all think? Any other ideas?

I think your suggestions were on point. I would also tackle it by making an overskirt (possibly separate from the bodice), a stiff tulle petticoat, and hoops. I also agree that they appear to be box pleats. The tulle would be easy to recreate so long as you get a stiff enough one and use starch and heat to set them. With the red fabric, you might want to use a tightly woven shiny fabric (like a cotton sateen) instead of a silk so that it can keep its structure. Take that last part with a grain of salt though, I'm no expert when it comes to fabric.

I have a lace choker I'm trying to attach ribbons to for a cosplay of Ichihime from Mahjong Soul, to attempt to replicate her choker. My first thought was to sew the ribbons to the choker but the test stitches I did were very very visible and it looked kinda bad, so my next idea was to attempt to glue two similarly sizes ribbons together, sandwiching the lace between to help hold it better, but it doesn't seem to be holding well. Easiest yes, but not your only option. When you use a straight base wig with twin ponytail clips, it looks great from the front but the hair won't have that pulled back look from the back of your head. Another method cosplayers use is to "stub" a short ponytail wig. It's a lot more intensive but the result looks better and it's WAY more sturdy than the easier method. If you don't mind the extra labor, I'd suggest it since your character's twin tails are loooong. They'll need the extra support. Here's some tutorials:

One great way to keep cool while wearing a suit cosplay is to wear a short-sleeve shirt under the jacket. Nobody's gonna be looking close enough to notice your cuffs aren't showing at the sleeves.

Also seconding >>10819505 to say that if you're cosplaying a suited character just get real dress clothes -- especially for something like Chainsaw Man where the colors aren't outlandish. It's very easy to figure out your sizes, and with a bit of effort you can score at thrift stores or find ex-rental stock on ebay for a comparable price to a "[x] cosplay" suit from miccostumes or whatever - and it's something you can wear when you actually need formal wear in your personal life.

Get some automotive filler primer or a tube of bondo if its less detailed larger print. You'll want those to smooth out the surface. Spray epoxy can work too but you loose detail, filler primer helps a lot, though sometimes you may need to deepen fine details or etch them back out if you have to use a lot of coats.

That would be a regular well-made suit. You can most likely put this costume together from normalfag clothing stores. Go for pieces made from organic fibers like cotton, rayon, and wool if possible. (Wool is insulating but it can be made very thin, and honestly people dealing with hot stuffy suits is not a new phenomenon). Wear that wife beater cooling undershirt. I absolutely cannot recommend wearing one of those Chinese-made polyester dress shirts. You'll be miserable.

So each row of hair is sewn onto a little piece of fabric to create a weft. This weft is then attached to the wig cap with vertical lines of lace. You can see the wefts running horizontally and the lace running vertically. All you need to do is gently tug the weft away from the lace to see the threads keeping it attached. Give them a little snip to remove them then use a needle and thread to reattach the weft where you desire. You can do glue, but it's super easy to make a terrible mess and bad end result. Essentially to make it look good, you create a weft out of glue instead of fabric and thread. Then you sew or glue that in like you would a real weft.

That's a question with a complex answer. Generally, it's not preferred because the main point of cosplay is to show your love for a character/series through transformation. However, I think that because you're doing this out of love for a friend who does indeed love that series/character that you'd get a pass.

Also I'd like to remind you that literally no one will know that you don't care for the series you're cosplaying from if you don't say a word. There's no risk. And if you need an out, just be honest or tell whomever is trying to quiz you not to be a dick.

I've definitely cosplayed a character from a series I know little to nothing about to help a friend pull of a duo or group cosplay. I would advise watching enough of the show/movie/gameplay to get a sense of the character (which it sounds like you have), just to help you figure out how to pose or wear the outfit, but you don't need to love it.
The disdain generally comes from the perception that someone is a clout-chaser, buying a costume of the flavor of the month to quickly throw a set on their OF or whatever before they even see the show. But it's not something people will confront you about at a con. And if the conversation goes to actually talking about the anime, an honest "I'm actually just cosplaying to help my friend" is a perfectly fine justification.

Any of those are probably fine picks, though I'd lean towards the Epic or Etsy ones since there are reviews with images that give you a better idea of what to expect. Arda might be a good choice since their wefts are pretty thick.
I'd recommend erring on the side of "too long" since Jack's hair being wild and voluminous is a big part of his design. But his messy style also gives you some freedom to interpret how exactly it looks in three dimensions, so don't sweat getting a ''perfect" one too much.

You can definitely get a lot of mileage out of a wig with proper styling, washing, and drying techniques. Yes, it can withstand being curled, straightened, and teased several times. Teasing is probably the most damaging to the wig as you're knotting up the fibers, but with careful detangling and proper tools, it'll be just fine. It's just a bunch of long plastic noodles after all.

I'll add that the proper tools and products are essential to keeping a wig healthy. And no they aren't expensive. At least not compared to the cost of a high quality wig. Remember that it's synthetic material and not actual hair so it needs to be treated slightly differently. For straightening I use Mane'n'tail detangler. It's for horses but works on wigs as well. Then a wig comb slowly and carefully and use a scissors to cut out any knots. Then rinse, pat with a towel and hang until dried. You may mess up a wig or two as you're getting started but with enough experience you can style then clean a wig to where it looks brand new.

please stick to products MADE for wigs, because other products will degrade the fibers over time. wigs aren't just "plastic noodles" like anon said, the fact that they're plastic means they need to be used with more care. steaming is best because it's indirect heat, where as curling irons can actually just destroy the fibers right there. the easiest way to take out the curl and knots is still a diluted fabric softener wash, which there are many tutorials on. and you should only use wig brushes, because normal ones will tangle the hair, even detangling brushes.

I met a Trauma Team cosplayer who rigged up a small camera as one of the helmet pieces which then connected to a small screen on the inside of the helmet.
It's not unheard of for cosplayers to have at least some part of their cosplay be "photo-only", it could be that he simply couldn't see with the helmet on and just put it on for photos. Even before mask mandates it wasn't uncommon to see someone walking the con floor carrying their helmet in hand to cool down and see better.

Hair wax shows up better on light hair, just like any other hair color product. If you have dark hair, you might get a tint or a super dark/desaturated version of the color but it won't be as bright as the super edited product photos. Keep in mind that wax also gets softer/melts over the course of a day and makes your hair look greasy and nasty, so if you're going to be in a cosplay all day, get a wig instead.

I regularly see people posting things for sale mentioning cons they attend if people want to pick things up. For the kind of stuff you're mentioning it seems like it wouldn't be much of a hassle to just carry them in hand until meeting with someone. I'd post on your social account or find a Discord for conventions to offer things up. As long as you're not trying to to hand off a prop unsolicited it's totally kosher.
I know you said you feel it's not worth selling, but I will say that I have used cosplay resale sites to unload stuff for dirt cheap - basically I make the cost what shipping would be plus like a dollar then list it with free shipping - at a "I want this gone" price. Sometimes stuff sits for several months, but it's not like I need the space and it's just an extra trip to the post office which I guess is better than throwing something in the trash.

Youtube is a great resource. Those grannys and diy-mom's have some seriously easy breezy tutorials on what to use and how to make your life easier. I will say: do you research and double triple check your materials before you check out online or in-store because with Cricut/Silhouette, it's the minute difference that get you.

1. No, live your dreams. most people would just assume they don't know your character

Essentially you would cut the sections of the jacket that you would want to make the panels for, trace those pieces onto your new fabric (with added seam allowance) and then sew them back into place. You'd have to remove the zipper first though. Honestly, it's easier to start from scratch at that point.

In terms of how to make the changes you want to the jacket, there's no change. But the techniques one would need to use to construct the jacket would be very different than typical fabric yes.

I'm not sure it's really possible. I can't imagine trusting a male photographer who has a clear goal in mind of only taking lewd photography. If I were in their shoes, I'd sooner find someone I know who I trust and is willing to do it for me.

I guess your only option would be to start by taking a wide range of photos, let's say at conventions, then you can try to follow up with the certain type of customer you're looking for. Eventually with repeated customership, you could talk about expanding business and creating a clear contract?

People will almost always ask for a photo rather than snapping a candid while walking - usually just "Hey, [character]! Can I get a picture of you?" Try to have a 'pose' or two for pictures: recreate a pose the character is famous for, angle yourself to show off a part of the costume you put extra effort on, or hold out a prop. Something more interesting than standing and waving.
If you're taking a photo with someone, feel free to suggest a pose that would work well together (e.g. making an attacking pose if you're a villain) but don't touch or grab them without asking.

A local university may have a system where you can join the library as a non-student and make use of things like 3D printers they may have. People at (board)game stores are also meaningfully more likely to have 3D printers if you want to find someone you can bum usage off (maybe they'll let you post fliers).
I don't know much about different 3D printers, but I do know they're not cheap and that a helmet of that size would need to be sliced into sub-sections that fit on the printing area.
Resin tends to come out smoother than plastic extrusion, but resin is pricier and dicier. If printed in plastic, you can do an acetone wash to smooth it out (by melting the plastic slightly) and then probably still sand like a motherfucker before painting.

What's pictured has see-through panels as well as lighting effects. This is not as simple as a 3D printed project and probably beyond your skill level as a first-time cosplay.

If you aren't familiar with the medium this is most likely correct. Again this is a multi-component build that requires a lot of skill and knowledge to pull off and make look good. 3D printing is definitely the way to go but without knowing which components go into the piece it won't look good to begin with.

For helmets you need to look into the size of the build area if you want to print it in one part. My favorite printer is my Bambulabs X1C / PIP but if you wanted a bigger build area you might need to pick up a creality cr10 or build a voron with 300 or 350 mm build area.
But if its your first cosplay just buy a helmet from someone else or pay someone to print it. Make sure you are really into the hobby before you spend that much on a printer.

Short answer: Nylon has better elasticity and is sturdier against heavy movment and activity. Polyester-is strong but as strong. It has a low shrink rate when washed and gives off a nice sheen in stiches. It's a bit stretcher so easier when applying tight sticking to stretch fabric.
Either way it depends on what you want the cosplay for and how comfortable u are with stretch fabrics. I recommend just buying both and testing them out on simulare fabric befor u start the project.
