It is sort of nonsensical because it devolves crossdressing into meaninglessness. A lot of female clothing can sort of be rationalized as having been male or gender-neutral at some point in time so crossdressing should be about current cultural perception and crossplay will be perceived as female clothing because the outfit was devised within the constraints of the current culture which views those items as female clothing and which are considered female clothing in that fiction.
It would pose an interesting question as to whether it is crossdressing to crossplay in what would currently be considered women's clothing but which would be considered male or gender-neutral clothing in the fictional setting it has been taken from.

yes. crossdressing is the intent to appear as the other sex. astolfo is just a twink guy in girl's clothes. if a girl is cosplaying a male character and that character is crossdressing with the intent to look female, then no, they're not crossplaying. crossdressing/crossplay is all about what your actual sex is and what sex you're trying to appear as. just wearing the clothing of the opposite sex doesn't make it crossdressing/crossplay if you're not trying to appear the opposite sex also. that also includes the character. if you're cosplaying a male in a specific outfit who's trying to look like a woman, you're crossplaying because you have to crossplay as the character, but if you're cosplaying a different outfit of his, it's just cosplay.

Crossdressing I'd say it's more what you appear as externally to others, and not your intent. Otherwise you can get guys who are in full drag, fake tits and all, who can say "I didn't intend to look like a female therefore this isn't crossdressing." We can debate what defines 'crossplay' when it comes to a character. But regardless, if a guy is dressed up as a male character who is dressed up as a girl, that means he are dressed up like a girl, which means he is crossdressing.

Anime girls in masks don't seem too common. The only ones I can think of from the top of my head are Kuki Shinobu (genshin impact, lower face mask), and Sakamata Chloe (hololive, upper face mask).
That said, if you only need the lower face covered, consider winter outfit characters with scarves covering the neck and lower-face, or "ninja characters", who tend to cover their mouths.
If you need a full-face mask, there are also characters that wear masks somewhere around their head/neck normally (e.g. certain miko characters, girls in festival wear, oni's, RO365 Mod III from Girl's Frontline etc). You could try one of these characters, dressed as if they chose to wear the mask instead.

I am apparently awful at shaving, even when I'm using the sharpest razor and getting close enough to get frequent cuts it still has visible stubble even if it feels smooth. In my experience, anything that covers a fair bit of skin. Don't pick some character in a crop top and booty shorts because it's going to be exceptionally difficult to make it look feminine. Furthermore, try to find a character with a mask, or just wear a face mask. It may look a little out of place, but good face makeup is another really difficult part for first-timers, and a mask is more appealing than a masculine face in this context.

Wax your face using a hard wax. You'll need a minimum amount of growth for the wax to grip the hair but the results will last several days before you get noticeable regrowth and even then it'll be quite fine. How do i dye a synthetic wig blonde?
It's a dullish brunette/brown color, i got it to match with my real hair but it just kinda doesn't fit with the rest.
I want it to be a brilliant blonde like picrel, i also want it to have a bit kf a gradient from top to bottom, with bottom being pure blonde and it getting slightly more brown as it goes to the top, is that a possibiltiy or do i just have to go with solid color?
Do i just dye it like regular hair or is there some catch?

I don't believe you can bleach a synthetic wig to make it lighter. You can dye them (make them darker or a color) but I don't think you can lighten one.

Okay, let's be nice here.

Dye soaks into things- and it changes their color color by adding more color. It can only make things darker because less color = lighter, more color = darker. If you want to make something lighter you need to bleach it- remove color. And as far as I know you can't bleach synthetic hair fiber.

THEORETICALLY SPEAKING you could also PAINT the wig, that is coat each of the fibers with a lighter substance. PRACTICALLY SPEAKING, anything that will stick to the wig fibers will also stick them together, like glue, and you'll end up with a giant mess.

If you want a lighter wig, you'll need to buy another wig.

in the past i've managed to get away with crossdressing due to my small frame even when i'm like 5"8'.

but last night my mom suddenly pointed out to me that it appears like my shoulders have gotten broader lately and i'm devastated. i barely have interests to cosplay male characters and cosplay is legit my biannual serotonin dose.

i've been thinking about what she said since yesterday and i'm just so lost. is there any way to get away with broad shoulders in crossplay or am I just screwed?

No, they don't have to be. Most women are slightly larger in the hips than the bust, but some women are the other way around.

I tend to adjust padding based on the costume- smaller hips with poofier skirts, smaller bust with heavier jackets, whatever looks good with the outfit.

Anything with diagonal lines towards the neck, it visually narrows them moves eyes away from them. Avoid anything detailed in the shoulder area UNLESS it's big-ass elements that can be actually used to hide your shoulders, but then these elements should be custom-made for you.
Also keeping your shoulders moved back helps for photos, but doesn't work with cons.
Also you can go hard on the hips area to balance the shoulders out.

On the other hand anything that is very form fitting or open shoulder will reveal the shape and make it appear more prominent than necessary.
