Fan Expo covers American media as well as anime. They do conventions across the country and have a decent guest list. They have the hobbits from the Lord of the Rings at this years con.

As far as anime goes they do have VA's but they are all dubbed ones so, yeah, not really worth going to see them. They do have other VA's as well.

AA and dealers room are both good here.

This is why I decided not to go. The fact that you have to provide a test "48 hours" before "the con" (no definition on when that is) but hotel reservations require a 72 hour advance cancelation means if I did manage to catch it I would be out hundreds. Or worst case scenario I would drive down there and then test positive because I was planning to arrive before the con.

Definitely not worth the hassle to plan a trip with their extreme rules. It's fine because gas keeps climbing anyway.

This is a big one.

SJ is the only con in TX right now that is requiring papers. If they are forcing people to show their papers then for a lot of people they can go to another con. There is literally a con going on every weekend in TX so it isn't like it was in 2020 or 2021, fans can pick whatever con they want to go to. So if one is telling you that you need papers or a negative test but there is nothing special at the con then you can just skip it and go to another one next weekend.

Based on what I read in the previous thread, masks will be required, and one anon had doubts about them because they somewhat fucked up last year, is there anything else I should know before buying a weekend pass?

Hot tip: as long as you're in the hotel, they cannot force you to wear masks. They can if you try to go into their panels and dealer room, but the hotel already said no one is required to wear masks anywhere else. If youre nearby, its a comfy convention to go to. Im skipping out cause matsuri is the same weekend and is overall better with no restrictions of any kind and a much bigger venue.

Afest before covid was great. They are a non-profit and actually use the money generated from the con to bring in guests from Japan each year.

Now it is really questionable. Last year they held it at the end of the year due to the contract they had with the hotel. They could have held it in the summer but they didn't and shot themselves in the foot with that. They do not have a vaxx mandate but they are having a mask one as well as temp checks. So not as bad as SJ but still annoying as all the other con's in the state don't have mask requirements.

I like Afest but the lack of Japanese guest makes it where it is just another con. AM is known for having a lot of problems but they are already advertising a Jpop and Kpop group. If AM can get foreign guests then the fact Afest isn't is kind of surprising. Overall I'm just going to wait a year before going back, no point in spending money on a con that is just like other ones but is farther away.

The target demo of conventions is the least vaccinated demo.
The senior pop is at like 85% vacc, the middle aged pop is at like 75%, but the 20-something pop in some states hasn't even hit 50%.
Also, that's having ever gotten the vaccination. But if you got any other than Novavax (which had trials in 2021 in the US, but finally got approved 10 or so days ago after a 6 month delay because OTHER vaccines caused Myocarditis so they were just skittish on approving any new one) then 6 months later your vaccine doesn't work and you need to get a booster.
The boosted population is really, REALLY low compared to the vaccinated population.

BCCC is a smaller con but it isn't bad and it is literally off of I-35. The worst thing is it is in Belton which is just a small Texas town. It is 40 minutes North of Austin, 15 minutes South of Temple, and 20 minutes East of Killeen. As I said it is right off of I-35 so if you stay in Temple you are about 15 minutes from the con.

No idea about Giganticon, this is probably a new con because I've never heard of it.

If you go to either you can hit up Naruto Ramen in Killeen. If I go to BCCC or Giga I'll probably stop on over and see how it is.

Depends on what you want out of a con.

Afest is not a nightlife con, don't go expecting to find a lot of people roaming around past 9pm. They tend to recycle some panels over the weekend to fill out thr 4 days which is kind of annoying. They have, hands down, the best art show and art auction in the TX con scene. They also have a fantastic artist alley, especially for a con of their size AND its all out in the open so you can go for free. They emphasize japan over other content so you don't get as many random panels. Pre pandemic they would typically bring Japanese manga artist, voice actors, directors and other industry guests.

They have had issues some year with efficiency and planning. I still remember the carnage trying to get autographs the year thr YOI creator was there.

Overall it's consistently one of my favorites. I'm not into parties and I like that things wind down early. I'm elderly by con standards.

Basically, there are 2-3 hotels connected to a sunwalk of death that gets 10-20 degrees higher thatweebs like to melt in. The main hotel uses the skyway to get to a foodcourt with boba/pizza/sushi and other stuff. It's cold as fuck usually in the hotel compared to most cons, there is a 24/7 4 room watching area to just chill in on the top floor of the con itself, as well.

Only major gripe? Getting around the hotel gets super hard in the second floor when it gets busy.

San Japan treats guests like they are gods. They wine and dine these guests and cater to their egos. They treat anime voice actors like their entire event lives or dies on these voice actors opinion of the event. It's dick riding to the extreme.

Anime Matsuri treats guests like Staff.
In their mind the guest has been paid to provide a service, and they expect the guest to provide that service. They don't care if the voice actors like them. In many cases they don't even like the voice actors themselves. VAs want to sell prints, and AM wants their ticket holders to see content they ask for, that's the beginning and the end of it for them.

Literally no masks and no covid bs. Afest went downhill when they became too motherly. It has gotten so bad that they shut down people having fun in the lobby.
