I genuinely cannot pick a style and love them all for different reasons let me tell you guys though; the ribbons on these shoes are a nightmare and will NOT stay up. My group has been talking about M lately, and she even went as far as searching up this girl before they were friends to get close to her because she knew she was friends with a girl she was stalking in the comm, and signed into her and her bf’s accounts when living in their apartment to keep tabs on their conversations and what she was saying about them, if anything. Honestly I think a lot of the "minimal makeup" advice was specifically to discourage newbies from doing garish shit. That's why it was always in newbie guides and similar advice posts. Just look how many itas and new lolitas try out things like shironuri, clown makeup, vkei looks, drag makeup, and so on. If you're so inexperienced that you can't do BASIC cute minimal makeup, anything more extreme is going to look fucking awful.

I also think sometimes the "minimal makeup" stuff comes from the time when full glam insta looks were super trendy. Like it's common that jfash makeup uses only 1 or 2 eyeshadow colors all over the lid. Even if they're dark colors, it's minimal compared to some kind of elaborate beauty guru cut crease look that takes a whole palette. Same with contouring, lip stick, etc. which are usually much more bold in western makeup.

It's hard to fuck up bb cream, mascara and a swipe of lip stain, and that's enough to look okay. It's really easy to fuck up bold makeup looks like crazy blush or lipstick, so it's best to steer newbies towards more simple stuff.

The standards were different, and being well-dressed and putting effort into your appearance can still look frumpy without looking unfinished or unhygienic. It's part of the charm.

Basically this. The only feminist aspect of lolita that can be argued is the aspect of maximalism, which has little to do with men or the male gaze either. However you can pose the idea that maximalism at the time was used to make yourself into "unwanted goods" so to speak. But basically all Japanese alt fashions have that maximalist aspect to counter Japan's constant push for minimalism, so it's not a very strong argument for feminist roots anyway. All forms of rebellion perpetrated by women doesn't have to relate to feminism, and certainly doesn't in this case.

I think this speaks to a cultural difference between primarily the United States and Japan and how each country has handled feminism/female empowerment as expressed through fashion and other trends.
It's just generally more socially acceptable for women in America to go out looking slovenly (things like sweatpants and no makeup), which represents a culture whose feminist movements taught women over the last 40ish years that they would get equal respect in the workplace or other public spheres by abandoning femininity. So any effort to look feminine is automatically assumed to be for male attention, which runs antithetical to the original point of the Japanese lolita fashion subculture as it formed.
In Japan, a more socially conservative country, women are still expected to put a certain amount of effort into their appearance for any respect at all as a baseline, and there is no guarantee that achieving whatever the feminine standard is at any given time will garner them equal respect to men. So, as I said before, it was a radical, novel concept to choose to work within that social framework of expected feminine presentation to yield a result that is intentionally all about personal expression and not at all about appealing to men.
If an average American man sees a woman in lolita fashion he might assume she's doing it for sexual attention, but if an average Japanese man sees a woman in lolita he might assume she's too self-absorbed to be marriage material.
Men are disgusting and their opinions should be discarded either way, but I think there's a worthwhile argument to be made that this nuance is still rooted in an expression of female empowerment (even though I'm not sure I've ever personally seen a Japanese woman call it "feminist").

>there's a worthwhile argument to be made that this nuance is still rooted in an expression of female empowerment (even though I'm not sure I've ever personally seen a Japanese woman call it "feminist").
that's fine, but the issue is the people equating it to feminism are equating it to radical ideas, when it's soft feminism at best. making yourself unattractive to society goes hand in hand with making yourself unattractive to men, but to claim that every lolita has to view it a certain way is annoying. the western comm doesn't have the same roots at all so trying to appropriate the japanese roots and apply them to western feminism is stupid. plus we have anons trying to apply their specific brand of feminism to it as if the japanese have never used makeup as a form of female empowerment. basically the discussion would be good if the participants weren't brainless and actually wanted to discuss instead of just insulting anons for wanting to look pretty and yelling into the void.

Ayrt and I totally agree. Shit flinging is so bad it's a miracle any discussion manages to happen here at all anymore.
I mostly agree with the idea that there isn't any point in trying to apply one specific political/ideological lens to this fashion at this point. However, if we're talking about what looks good and why wearing makeup is part of the aesthetic of this fashion, dismantling a western feminist reading of the fashion seems important. Talking about why Japanese women did what they did in the history of this fashion is more about understanding the reasoning behind continuing to put effort into makeup while wearing the fashion, at least to me.
When western feminists get up their own ass about trying to twist the Japanese feminist roots of the style into whatever they want to believe for woke points they choose to ignore how it damages the way the fashion is meant to be worn. It's a fashion community and the rules exist to facilitate looking good to yourself and those within the community you choose to engage with. Plenty has changed in what we call lolita fashion over the years but the community identity is still focused around a modest, feminine fashion that celebrates being feminine for its own sake, and I don't think it should be controversial in any comm globally to consider your makeup of your coord.
All the extra politics heaped upon any niche community without any regard for its internal cohesion or history is just a cancer that slowly kills it.

>> No.10732334

>>10732311
Why is it wrong for each country to adapt a fashion and build off of it? Does it really matter? How does it actually affect anything? I'm not trying to attack you, but moreso ask what's the point of clinging to tradition when fashion is such a cyclical hobby and each cycle adds something new to the previous? People will come up with their own rules to make it look flattering, with or without makeup or whatever else used to be required in the fashion.

At this point, /cgl/ is in a female dick-measuring contest as to who's "more lolita". And maybe even sound in denial that lolita fashion now isn't what it used to be several decades ago.

>> No.10732360

>>10732334
I think the point of clinging to tradition that happens here is that it exists as a part of the cycle. In any hobby community there's bound to be an old guard that eventually gets subsumed by a new, younger generation. As one experienced group teaches and has conflict with a less experienced but usually more enthusiastic group, the new people cultivate their own understanding of the hobby and eventually that becomes the new old guard, cycle complete.
My issue when it comes to makeup is just a single example of something that is obvious in western comms for a lot of reasons. There was a context in the past for why we did certain things in this hobby, and knowing that context, this community has made informed choices that have been generally well integrated into the core identity of the fashion moving forward.
When a lot of new people join the hobby community and then make excuses to avoid learning the rules or values of the hobby, how can they be trusted to know which way to steer? This is why the politics of online spaces ruins so many hobbies, because people will use their ideology to shield themselves from the little bit of gatekeeping or critique that could actually encourage them to learn or get better.
I recognize that fetishizing the past and larping like an oldfag are just as useless for making a nice community. But I can see why so many oldfags get defensive when they're outnumbered in spaces that used to have rules more clearly defined around standards and history that they understand.
People will, and should, make up their own rules or experiment. But when they're in a group together, they have to be able to negotiate and make their labels have enough homogeneity and distinction to matter.

Being able to differentiate between good advice and nitpicking bullshit is a skill that develops with time and practice, but normie men aren't a part of this fashion so their opinions are invalid by default.
