With Iwai fast approaching and no discussion around for months, I believe the time has come. Here is the latest thread for info and updates on all (known) conventions within the Sunshine State. They are as follows

>Anime Iwai - November 12-14 - Fort Lauderdale
>Anime Town: Pensacola - November 20-21 - Pensacola
>Holiday Matsuri - December 17-19 - Orlando
>OtakuFest - January 15-16 - Miami
>Brick City Anime Festival - February 12-13 - Ocala
>Pensacon - February 18-20 - Pensacola
>LOLCON - February 19 - Seawalk Pavilion - Jacksonville Beach
>Collective Con - March 11-13 - Jacksonville
>SwampCon - March 26-27 - Gainesville
>MegaCon Orlando - May 19-22 - Orlando
>Supercon - May 20-22 - Miami Beach
>Mizucon - May 28-30 - Miami
>Anime Festival Orlando 2022 - June 24-26 - Orlando

Thoughts? Plans? Meet-ups? Expectations? Discord link would have been included, except they're always expired by the time I find them.

Is the Florida /cgl/ scene a bad as I hear? Thinking about attending some Florida cons since I'm from the south but don't know if I want to hang with gulls

>> No.10696854

Continued here to avoid going off topic in the first post. Plans for me are that Iwai and OtakuFest are guaranteed on all days, especially given that OtakuFest was my favorite of this whole year. Matsuri is high priority but still contested. MegaCon and SuperCon at once is a problem. The latter is closer but the former is probably better. SuperCon this year was absolutely pitiful. Speaking of, Mizucon is close but not worth checking out for more than a day, no doubt. Anime Festival Orlando was on my list this year, and was the lone cancellation, so no idea.

>> No.10696855 [DELETED]

Well, that was quick. Most I can say about this is that I've run into some gulls at multiple cons, the latest one being AWA. They're cool enough, even if they kinda just showed up at the DoubleTree lobby for Otakufest like "So is this the /cgl/ meetup?" Guess so, even if it wasn't planned. And regardless of where they came from, the other people there really made it. For such a new con. it seems the community is forming pretty quickly. Also heard Iwai is good for that, but need to see for myself since this upcoming one is my first. (And a redemption arc of sorts, because I missed it in 2019 and that was my last chance for a con before lockdowns commenced.)

I plan to attend anime iwai this year. Its gonna be my second time cosplaying, since my first was supercon earlier this year. What exactly should I expect from iwai? For larger cons like supercon I always just shop, people watch, and take pics with cosplayers. Idk how a con like iwai is supposed to be handled, can I just expect to do all the same stuff at just a smaller scale?

>> No.10697300

>>10697212
Iwai is small so yes that on a smaller scale. Iwai is also a party con which happens after hours.

>> No.10697322

Not bothering with Iwai this year, fun convention no doubt but as I’ve gotten older I’ve started to care less about the party scene at cons. Looking forward to holmat though.

Supercon was weak as fuck, honestly. Dead on Friday, not a very engaging crowd, more staff than guests by midnight Saturday. The guy I was with made the good point of mentioning that it's because Supercon is not actually an anime con, which attracts the more dull attendees. From what I heard, Iwai is much better for "the community" aspect. And also, there's an entire floor in the hotel dedicated to con goers, which could be a beautiful disaster depending on how it turns out.

Pretty good. Been to a few when I had the time, I think the biggest complaint I had at these things was the time in which they had hours of operation during. They are definitely smaller and you can feel it even to some of the ones I went to as a first time con goer for some.

If going to any of the up coming conventions I would for sure keep expectations a bit lower and down to earth. You can have good fun at these conventions but expecting the same precovid scene is just asking for disappointment before it begins

All the smaller, more localized events I've done have been all fun, drama free all weekend. There's also a giant roster of gulls that are going and things to do already prepped for Otakufest. What irks me the most is masks and the hypocrisy behind them. If these preachy pro mask cunts REALLY cared about Covid that much they’d be wearing a full hazmat suit and only eating and drinking alone in a sealed sterilized room or better yet, not going out at all. But they don’t really care. They just care about looking virtuous.
>bbbut if we don’t go out and enforce masks evil chuds will gather
And? They regularly express a desire to see anti mask and vax people die from Covid. Why not let them? Unless, it’s not really about Covid. It’s about appearances.

>> No.10708692

>>10708688
That's what gets me the most, the hypocrisy.
You have to wear a mask unless you're eating. This means restaurants will make you wear a mask in the lobby but you don't need to when you sit down. Does the Corona just respect that you're eating and only tries to get you when you're in the lobby? If it's really this deadly why is society being allowed to continue at all? That's the case with everything.
I once saw a clip of a politician behind a stage. He wasn't wearing a mask. When he had to go to the podium, he put one on to walk over to it for appearances, then took it off when he got there to give a speech. This is all just a big show that's been going on for TWO YEARS. Yet no one seems to notice or care. Of course the Omicron had to suddenly show up and steal Christmas for the second year in a row.

Living in fear, living behind a mask that hides one's individuality, is not living at all. We all have to die one day and I'd rather risk it being short yet enjoyable than this slow decay into stagnation.

Alright, I liked some parts like the venue and vibe but not the crowds or lack of interesting stuff to do. Will return with Christmas cosplay next year. Also random aside but this place is literally the Shinra building, even down to the spotlights. Still here by the way. I'm chilling by the pool as Rei.

As for Otakufest, two updates: mu "Occult themes of animu and vidya" got accepted...three days after they said emails went out. Anyone ever been to Ocala's con? I somewhat recently moved there so I was thinking about checking it out. Chain store wagies are forced to wear masks but I barely ever see anyone else wearing them here so if they add any mask rules it would be purely because of the people running the con. I haven't been to anything recently except a free con because I refuse to pay to get in to a place where I would be forced to wear a cuck muzzle. I assume this con won't have a huge turnout but I am considering paying for it to support local anime events that don't have completely retarded staff.

Also, a light fuck you to OP because I think the term scrote is funny.

I'll be completely honest with you man, I love Higurashi, but if you're after recognition, I don't think Keiichi will net you much. The girls all have their unique styles which would make them more recognizable, like rena, but keichii is at best going to make you just look like a generic anime guy with a white shirt. It also doesn't help that not only is keichii not very well known, there are like at least 4 versions of him floating around between the VN (classic, ps3, PC), and anime versions.

Well shit. If there were any open invite parties, I found exactly one on Sunday night and it was pretty small. This was it, folks. I came in with high expectations, and we met them all, or utterly exceeded them. I made it all the way to day -3 (today) and now I need to see some highlights cause even I might have forgotten quite a few

>My first con party on Friday
>A massive reunion special from the second I walk in
>Things aligning perfectly like "Did you see the Spider-Men all pointing at each other?" "Yeah, there's two behind you."
>Not being able to go more than a few steps without a compliment or asked for a picture
>My panel going great with a full room, few leaving and no one calling me insane, plus insulting a heckler
>Shocking the Touhou panel host with my knowledge
>Networking and pulling favors like never before
>Debating which one of three parties to attend, before realizing two of them were the same, and then making it to the "third" one
>All my crews amassing into one
>The most insane con party I've ever seen with 40+ people in a room
>Getting details from people who want to help me set up my own convention
>Tip offs about three local events in the next two months
>Dicking around in the Wawa parking lot at 3 AM, before going back and jamming till 6
>Trolling con jannies repeatedly
>Unofficial panel rooms all around with Ram Ranch musical chairs and karaoke

And then the ultimate...
>The 50+ people all running through the halls, screaming 1000 Miles and crashing panel rooms
>Absolutely repugnant onions staffer telling us to get out then insulting him to his face and kicking me out
>Camping in a room until another party started
>Chatting up almost everyone about what went down and prying for more details
>Going into vendor hall and upstairs over a day after it was closed down
>Hanging with a girl until 2:30 today

So yeah, 37/10. Would do again. Only bad part is being so huge, we might have to upgrade to a bigger venue, which is when it gets bad /blog

No familiar faces from /cgl/ at Beyond but it was still insanely packed for a seven-hour event at a tiny venue. No masks enforcement either, even with me as the only one not bothering. Very nice. It would seem I'm just going to keep running into the crew of maids because they've been at 4/4 of my last Florida events. Walking downtown on a Saturday, I hardly saw any traffic except that going to the interstate. It is what it is, but if you're saying Wasabi isn't much better I'll just see about another Miami con.

Well this is rather late, but I managed to do both Hero Hype and Mizucon barbecue.

Hype
>Venue for Hype is insanely tiny, so it's a good thing I just waltzed in for free
>Bumped into familiar faces, as expected
>Finally managed to find the huge abandoned area hidden on the second floor
Barbecue
>Recognized immediately, loads of Iwai people there, but only a few costumes
>Sudden gusts of wind make everybody run away
>...including a guy who rammed my car in the parking lot

Next event: Ft. Lauderdale Con on the 27th

Honestly, your best bets at finding people are either here or the Florida server. .gg/CPqQukAp8u Obviously, it will be a lot easier if you're in a good sized area that has a lot to do (caveat, since Jacksonville doesn't seem to draw in much of a crowd)

Unironically, Facebook groups are the best for this. Join a group for the convention you plan to attend and you're immediately in contact with hundreds, if not thousands of people who will also be attending. Lots of people, myself included, use these groups to meet people.
I don't know any other place on the internet that can give you that much reach. Groups are pretty much the only reason I haven't deleted my Facebook.

Bumping for two new events to the South Florida roster, with a party in Davie this Friday night and pic related. Would totally go up there, except 60 miles roundtrip for a 3 hour event ain't exactly a great idea.

Too bad all the cosplay people in Florida are Miami drama kings and queens. One of the most toxic communities that I ever had the displeasure of dealing with. The community consists of avowed Nazi larpers & chola girls from Miami.
Everyone is two-faced and will make up shit. The worst shit is that they actually adopted a sperg and encouraged him to sexually harass cosplayers. They then toss him into the garbage when he inevitably pulls a Chris-chan on girls.

What was with a bitch caterwauling on stage tonight? I wanted to go to a dance party, not some impromptu concert for someone who can't sing.

Any cosplays of somewhat obscure characters (that aren't literal OCs of course) that caught the attention of any of you during Metrocon?

Anyone heard of or are going to Necronomicon in September? I got a flyer from a guy at Metrocon but lost it, apparently it's like the oldest Florida convention or something along the lines of being the oldest something? I might go if my friends are able to go since it's in Tampa and I'm a Tampa bab that doesn't like to travel too far away from home, apparently it's kind of a more table top and trading card themed convention which kind of interests me since the so called table top gaming room at Metro had disappointed me with its disappointingly zero Yu-Gi-Oh presence every time I checked it out, to think a table top game room in an anime convention wouldn't have any Yu-Gi-Oh going on, even after Takahashi's death, talk about lame.

I went last year and it's probably the worst con I've ever been to. I don't usually like to be so negative about cons, and I always try to look for silver linings, but the people who run this con are out of touch with what people expect from conventions nowadays. They have had declining attendance for years, and for good reason.
It might be the oldest con in Florida and that applies to the age of attendants as well. It's the same people going now that went back when it started. Almost everyone is 40+ and there were only a handful of young people.
Don't expect to see any cosplay when you're there, because other than the handful of young people nobody cosplays.
All the panels and events were terrible. Panelists didn't show up and if they did they were just winging it.
It might look on the schedule like things are going on all night, but everyone is old and goes to bed at 8pm so the con is completely empty after that. There was a "rave" at night, which was music and a dozen people or so throwing around some glow in the dark frisbees.
It would have been good to at least be in a nice hotel for the weekend, but the hotel was very old and run down.
I will say that the guy running the video game room was cool. They had a few vr headsets and it was the only place I had fun at the convention.
Not worth going to imo.

Oh, also the merch hall was super small and was full of people selling hand made garbage. Low effort shitty art that wouldn't sell at a flea market. Not sure how any of that stuff even related to a sci-fi convention.
There was one guy in the corner selling hentai doujinshi. Talked with him a bit and he was cool.

>St. Petersburg is getting its first-ever anime convention, aptly titled “Anime St. Pete.”
>Anime St. Pete is brought to you by the organizers of St. Pete Comic Con, which drew 3,500 attendees, earned positive fan reviews, and labeled a “super-success” by local media.

Did anyone here attend St. Pete Comic Con? How was it? I'm interested if these organizers are good at organizing since this is apparently the first anime con there by them.

I first learned of anime iwai last through my coworker who was also a staff member there and its kinda crazy that it actually has this much fanfare on here.

Take it from someone who's been to 32 cons in the last 18 months: as far as an actual *convention* itself goes (and not the behind the scenes events), Iwai is #1 for me. Not just of those 32, but ever. So the fact that those retarded motherfuckers STILL won't say anything yet is getting pretty annoying desu. I asked someone who knows basically everyone in the entire Florida scene if it was happening and was given a firm "yes", but still can't believe it's happening until I see some evidence.

Eh...Considering what I've heard regarding the behind the scenes organizational stuff I'm not sure what the status would be anymore. Grant it I don't remember much about what was said and how much it applies now so I'm not much help.

Just go by what we know already and it's pretty obvious what the answer is
>Had their 2021 dates over a year in advance
>Otakufest six months away but already opened panel submissions
>Barely over three months to go
I'm thinking it's a "no".

St. Pete Comic Con was eh. The Coliseum is essentially a one room building usually used for homecoming/prom so the entire con was basically just the vendor hall. There's a couple alcoves where the guests were signing, panels and table top gaming were on the second floor balcony and the stage for contests was right there in the thick of everything too. It was very loud, especially with all the shrieking Genshin tweens. We stayed for maybe an hour chatting up some of the costuming groups there before we couldn't find anything more to do and left to go to a bar downtown. We had to park kinda far away too. Probably won't consider going again unless the venue is different because that building is just too small.

Wow, (unless those retards get their act together at the last minute) there's nothing of note until HolMat. Sad! Guess I'll try "Sunrise Comic Con" next week and keep my expectations very very low.

>> No.10796272

Bought my Holmat tickets; never been before despite living in Central Florida for most of my life. Maybe a stupid question but what's the temperature usually like if you're just bumming around the con? I want to cosplay but I'm afraid of getting too shivery in certain costumes.

Entirely dependent on your tolerance for cold and what you're wearing. Even light outfits can become soaked in sweat during "winter". I wore some highly revealing outfits last time and don't remember getting particularly cold even once. This coming from someone who's lived in Florida his entire life.

Ok, looks like South Florida still has at least one more left this year. And while I normally take superhero mascots as a huge sign to stay away, I don't even care anymore since this bump is just a thinly veiled excuse to point out yet again how the retarded Iwai motherfuckers have still not said ONE GODDAMN WORD about anything.

Jesus fucking Christ FINALLY. Anyone following knew this was inevitable-- cancelled this year and new venue. What I didn't expect was them updating their site without actually mentioning it directly. Not on their Facebook. Not on their Discord. Not even on the front page of their site, you have to dig for it. Is Mizu this incompetently run? I don't think I've ever seen this level of stupidity from staff, which is really saying something
