I think many struggle to coord Wa correctly because of color balancing and deviation of a true kimono structure - since for kimono the main focus is on the obi and the patterns are either on the border of the kimono + sleeves and up in the left shoulder, so it just kinda looks wrong in lolita when people try to imitate that, the balance is throw off and it can become too busy. Not only that, but a traditional obi will look too blocky/frumpy on a lolita dress, so the color blocking that is usually done for kimono is lost and the wa lolita dress is just too much of the same thing.
I think that for the Wa to look properly balanced and elegant in a lolita coord, the best bet is to have it in subdued prints and colors and/or use the hakama style as an inspiration. I personally love Taisho inspired wa lolita and I think it's the best version of it.

Wrong bodyshape and ethnicity. With other lolita styles I can get away with because it's European inspired but Hanfu and Wa are so distinctly Japanese and Chinese it just doesn't feel right with my dark skin and natural hair and I don't want to be called out by anyone saying I'm being disrespectful.

No, generally speaking people in Japan want outsiders to try kimono. You can appreciate the culture and art by learning about the different types and meanings behind motifs. Japan has tried to get non-Japanese people interested in wafuku by having exhibits abroad and opening up textile tours. Honest participation is appreciation not appropriation.

Military professionals and soldiers still exist but military lolita is a thing. Nursing is a common profession, there are still nurse inspired lolita items and photoshoots. Maids/Cafe waitresses too. Bakers as well. Also nuns. Some of those jobs involve years of training or dedication too.

Are all of those themes in lolita weird?not really. Obviously they're all a bit of a bastardization or exaggeration of the original but you could say the same about wa in general. Oiran, maiko, geisha, and other professions where traditional dress is common can make for fine themes for a wa coord/photoshoot.

i said i don't like other "profession" coords like nurse coords either, learn to read. you need to stop knee-jerking. plus the main reason feel it would be weird is because i can't see how it would translate into a coord. although maiko styling is traditionally considered very cute a lot of a maiko(and even geikos) styling is subtle and based on a bunch of japanese traditional preassumptions that will be lost in the modern day. oiran however is easy, just wear a big front facing obi and people will automatically associate it with japanese prostitutes(and also confuse it with geiko among other things). also oiran don't exist anymore outside of actors, but geiko still do and are still trained the same way they were historically. so with that in mind, who would want to make an apprentice themed coord? i honestly really like wa(that's why i'm here trying to have a real discussion)and even more traditonal inspired coords in general, but i just thought maiko coords would be weird and kind of pointless. it has nothing to do with whatever you are making up in your head.

Idk what these weird accusations are about. All I was saying is that career coords are a thing and some people wear them, maiko or geisha are in that same category imo. I don't like nurse coords either but personal dislike of something doesn't make it weird just cause it's currently someone's job out there, which was the original statement I replied to.

Their styling was not somehow easier just because you or others might find it more instantly recognizable, and many people with no knowledge on the difference mistake oiran for geiko and still think geisha are prostitutes, and don't know the difference between geisha and maiko. And while I understand what your were saying about the subtleties of geisha and maiko, the nuance and traditional styling could be researched and used appropriately to make a coord work for them, especially since as you said they're currently trained the traditional way, so the line of thinking that those things would be lost to time or to a modern person isn't completely true or the only way to look at it.

As far as who would want to do a coord or photoshoot like that to begin with: people who have similar appreciation for traditional looks. I personally don't wear wa, but from the perspective of someone who likes art, I could imagine it would be fun to do a series of wa coords and photosets inspired by these different things and not pointless to someone who gets excited about all those little details.

I'm not trying to have a fight, I was just also trying to have a real conversation and offer my perspective. So, "Who would want to put energy into a maiko coord when it seems pointless"? Probably me if I were into wa, for the sweet and cute leaning aspects you mentioned.

I am the original anon that asked about the Maiko thing, I didn't know this would cause some mild discussion.
It's fair if you don't like profession inspired coords, that makes sense. But it's not offensive or anything, most nurses wouldn't care about nurselitas because it's not fetishizing their profession. But I can understand someone thinking it would make "light" of it.
The same could be said about Maiko and Geiko. As long as you don't go out of your way to disrespect and make fun of it, they wouldn't be offended. There's a lot of Maiko Henshin/dress up houses in Japan , and they encourage gaijin tourists to do it too. I am currently doing research in kimono and unless they are a expert, they don't much about kimono iconography and such, that include Maiko (even japanese people can confuse dressed up tourists as real Maiko), so it's not as if it's a "off limits/sacred ground" or anything like that.

I believe it's more a problem of translating it to lolita, since maiko's kanzashi are usually used with nihongami (traditional japanese hairstyles), but I think you can work through some limitations like that if you try, like in this makeup advert, for example. It's Maiko inspired, but simplified, and super cute imo. It would look great in a way coord with sweet themes (like with a wagashi print!)
