Hello /cgl/, I would like to know if you could help me understand how this sweater is made (pic related).
I'm trying to recreate it, and I want to stay true to its original design, but this sweater seems a bit confusing to me. it seems like it comes in two parts: pink sweater and white hoodie vest. Is it possible to try to copy this sweater-vest concept? Has anyone come across this sort of thing before?

I'm working on a Hollow Knight cosplay, but a sort of cuddly plushie version. Foam character head with minky soft fabrics, etc. A more cartoony look, rather than gritty or weathered. What I'm trying to figure out is the cloak. The cloak has this almost ropey-like or striated/grooved appearance. I don't know what to call this technique (Cabling? Ribbing?) so I can better research what I'm doing. I want to have batting layered between the minky fabric to make it extra thick and plushie, but still be able to swing and flow with movement. Pic related is an actual plushie of the character showing a cloak with the texture that I'm talking about, as well as a blanket with sort of the right texture. What technique should I be researching here- or how else should I go about this?

Unfortunately you can't have the best of both worlds because the more plush the cape is, the heavier it'll be. You either have to give up flow for plush or plush for flow. Your idea of sewing batting between minky works well for recreating that plush look though. I don't think there's a name for this technique but you would sandwich batting between 2 layers of minky and then sew the curved lines on top with a simple straight stitch.

Try looking for something that's closer to a silver/shimmery light pink (similar to the color of your actual waterline) instead of using white. It'll still give your eye an enlargening effect without looking like there's an obvious white gap.

I need really long wefts, like 60"+. The longer the better. In a silvery or light gray color. Not for a wig, they're being sewn into fur and ideally long enough to even drag on the ground. Arda has some, but any other retailer suggestions are appreciated.

You might have to buy an Arda Delilah Silky wig in sterling (Or white and dye it) or a Delilah classic (which comes in silver) and harvest it to get what you need but looks like thats as long as they go.

Arda does have a Jumbo Braid that goes to 70 inches unfolded but it only comes in Wheat and the work involved might not be worth it even if it came in your colors and it would be easier to harvest the two above

I previously posted on here before asking questions about Dragon Crown Sorceress. I made the corset from self patterning and it doesn't have the eyelets yet on a dressform making it look like a brick but it's fully boned ( whole thing is really shittly but Its a first time)

My question is at the bottom it bubble slightly because I had very little room to put in a bottom seam because of the boning length. I'm going to try and iron it out but something is telling me to try and get some lace or something to cover the bottom or leave as it is?

Sorry if this is the wrong thread, but I'm getting more into cosplay, and I feel like a lot of more popular female cosplayers seem to do similar costumes. While I'm proud of my whacky taste I feel like if I want to get popular (which I do) there are almost like...boxes I need to tick off? Types of cosplays I should do just for recognition/familiarity?

So my question is, what do you think are sort of "iconic" cosplays I should do? Obviously I know this is a really subjective question and I am still definitely going to do what I love most of all, but I want to be easily recognisable as a "cosplay girl on the internet" by some of my cosplay choices, if that makes sense?

So far I feel like there needs to be a Disney Princess, a Mario girl...but what else?

How exactly should I make this amalgamation of capes/wings? Should I just layer like four or five sheets of fabrics, each for the cape and the different colored bug wings? What kind of fabric should I use? How do I make it so that the wings retain their shape instead of just falling flat like the cape, putting some wire inside in the shape of the wings? Can this even really be replicated well without looking like a dumb mess?

I'm still trying to figure out how to do the rest though. Pic related is how the back of the cape thing is supposed to look like and it looks like a damn mess with how it all seems to overlap and with all the different shapes and colors.
What I was thinking of doing was just sewing together and coloring each individual set of wings, and either wearing each set of wings on top of each other in layers, or maybe just sewing them together into one cape. I'm not sure though, because I'm second guessing whether or not it could be that simple to make it look good, or if it'll even still hold the look of multiple wings together or just look like a bunch of cloth messily laid on top of each other.

I'm new to cosplay, is there some kind of small, programable personal speaker already on the market that I could buy? Specifically, I'm looking for something with a relatively small form factor that either comes with a small switching mechanism or connects to a phone in order to allow me to deliberately pick between different sound effects (that I've loaded up) on the fly, and ideally comes with some sort of small button I could tape onto my hand to activate it on command. I've done some looking around but am having trouble finding anything that lets you pick deliberately what it plays, the devices I've seen either loop one sound or goes down a list of loaded sounds in order. I don't think it would be terrible to try and program something myself to accomplish this but if somebody else already did it, it would save me a lot of work

Hm, I'm thinking of putting together something like pic related with a set of clothes that can be used for ordinary wear:

- Domino mask
- Black Fur Parka (?) + some design slapped on (still deciding between doing a large custom sticker of some kind or just printing on some nice material)
- Red satin/silk shirt
- Black pants
- Black Knee Length boots

I'm having trouble finding a black parka which goes down near the knees though if what pic related is wearing is even actually called a parka. I'm also a bit concerned that it'll be pretty hot. Any recommendations? Thanks!

Tbh it'll be difficult putting this cosplay together from regular clothes because of how unique the garments are. For the coat, it might be easier for you to find a knee-length black coat that you like and attach the fur to it, even if you just use snaps or glue it on. Instead of using a sticker, use heat transfer vinyl, which is more permanent. This is just personal preference but I think a cotton shirt would work better for the costume since a silk shirt would be too lightweight to work with the rest of the outfit.

They should be pretty easy to make. Just cut the shapes out of foam, layer them, and attach them to your cosplay using magnets or velcro (so you can take them off to wash the rest of your cosplay).

Honestly there's a power to doing more obscure cosplay. If you're the sixth Bowsette I've seen that day then I'll probably just go "oh hey, another one" and keep walking but if you do something niche like, say, Bad Girl from No More Heroes I will absolutely run across a convention hall to get a photo of you. It's better in the long (and maybe even short) run to build your "brand" as 'the person who does X sort of unique cosplays'.

They may be a little brusque but I tend to agree with >>10694535, cosplay is a pretty dang demanding (time and money) hobby. Even if you just do flavors of the month it gets expensive fast, and cosplay is big enough now that "I bought the costume from AliExpress and took selfies in it" isn't going to get you more than a dozen likes. It's not a cracked code where you get instantly insta-famous by cosplaying the right thing. And even if people may not be able to smell "fake fan" they definitely can notice if you go the extra mile with posing, acting, etc for a character you really care about rather than just bandwagoning.

It's easiest to get a soundboard app for your phone and a bluetooth speaker rather than come up with a complex and expensive bespoke solution.
Also keep in mind that longer music or louder noises is generally not as funny as you think it is at a con, it can be a fun gag but keep it short and/or keep yourself moving so you don't annoy people.

The reason why I say that >>10694475 shouldn't cosplay is because they will eventually end up choking themselves out literally tier whoring for attention. Cosplaying popular characters constantly eventually leads to the OnlyFans pipeline, and from there, you may as well have just written yourself into a Requiem for a Dream plotline. You'd be better off just doing the characters you actually love, and putting the soul behind it. If they happen to be character, fucking amazing. If not, there is always a chance someone will recognize them. As an example, ages ago I did Hikigaya and my friend did Yukinon. We literally just did the two as a way to just hang out since we don't get to see each other often, and we both loved Oregairu in general. We got recognized a few times here and there, so it's not like the anon is dead in the water.

Yo, I got back from Michaels today after hopping like 4 different stores for transparent spray paint. (Supply Line is an absolute bitch.) So here's some useful shit I discovered.

Sometimes shit doesn’t go your way. You are better off just working on a project until it’s as you’ve envisioned it instead of half assing it. You could always do something light if you’re crafty enough, but always remember that cosplay if done properly is always high risk / high reward if you’re a hardcore DIY person. But that risk becomes less of a risk if you save the project for a diff con. That’s about the best I can put it, I know it’s probably what you don’t want to hear but considering I’m in the same boat at you, I decided to throw in the towel over here.

It won't be possible to make a visor out of hot glue. The surface will be lumpy/uneven and clear hot glue is a translucent white when cool, not purely clear like when it's hot. Resin could work but you would need a mold for it. The best way to make a visor without vacuum forming is to use thermoplastics.

I don't have much experience with dyeing clothes beyond tiedyeing and some basic splatter effects on white clothes. Not sure where else I could post this question, so I thought to try here.

I have am ugly mint green sweater that I want to do a dye job on. Tag says its 80% cotton and 20% polyester. Not sure yet what color I want to do yet, since that'll depend on what I could achieve.
I was wondering if I could get some guidance on what are my options here? I've been reading advice to just try your dyes on a swatch, but I don't exactly have that luxury since it's just a one off sweater. Obviously I'd want the dye job to last as this would be going in the wash semi regularly.

I wouldn't suggest this. Black dye never comes out perfectly and the dyes sold for home use are actually just dark grey and aren't super opaque. At best, you'll get a sweater that's slightly darker. At worst, you'll get a splotchy mess.

I would suggest starting with a corset-esque pattern like McCall's M7615. View E has the princess seams, pointed sweetheart neckline, and is strapless. You would need to adjust the back, but otherwise it's a good base for the bodice. Make a bunch of mock ups. Everyone's body is different and due to how form fitting a corset should be it will be very noticeable if it's too long/short/big/small. Buy discount cotton and make like three mock ups, tweaking the pattern each time.

Be very mindful about your boning position, sewing over boning can fuck up your sewing machine so make sure you keep it out of your seam lines.

Doing some brainstorming on how to make pic related cape. It has a (large) standing collar and a second cape that seems to be layered on top of the first one.

The answer to this should really be put in the op of this thread or something: not all anime, video game, etc. clothes have proper names because they're not real styles. This cape, for example, is based off of a cape with a standing collar but it doesn't have a proper style name dedicated solely to a cape with all of those exact design details. You would need to look up tutorials for capes with standing collars (try "vampire cape") and modify the pattern to suit your needs (e.g. making it look like the cape has a top and bottom layer).

Heavy interfacing is a start but it may cause the collar to be so heavy that it flops backwards instead. You could try sewing wire or heavy duty zip ties along the outer edge of the collar so that it has enough support to stand up without flopping around.

If I'm understanding you correctly, it sounds like you are using a machine to create the buttonholes. Is it possible that you're accidentally cutting the threads when you slice it open? Perhaps try adjusting the settings on your machine? Stabilizer? If all else fails, you could try handstitching it like the historical costumers do: create the hole then bind the opening with thread.

This definitely changes the answer. Yes, I agree that Straps 1 & 2 would probably only be feasible for masters level crafters. Stilts are just such as safety hazard that it's only recommended for people who know how to stay safe to attempt it. That doesn't stop those who don't give a shit from trying, but still.

To answer your question about the final form, I think it would be feasible for you. It will definitely be a technically challenging costume, but if you have the time to dedicate to it and are willing to learn the skills then go for it. I'd suggest starting with the bodysuit. Correct, using a 1 step buttonhole foot, and interfacing it and everything. It gets created properly (so the foot isn't the issue), the issue is that after I slice it open the actual fabric threads that were on the inside of the buttonhole start to unravel since the "space" inside the buttonhole is actually p wide. I've tried using Fray Away after making the buttonhole (and before slicing it open), and it still unravels. I've tried using fray away after making the cut, and it becomes way too stiff and unusable. There's no good suggestions online except for "just use Fray Away :^)" even though that doesn't do that much.

Not necessarily cosplay, but need some help with my sewing machine. I replaced the bobbin winder on my Brother CP7500 (successfully!) but ended up with this spare piece (bottom pic). Literally 1 whole week late but look up tutorials on creating faux hair parts in wigs. You basically want to use a tiny eyebrow razor to shave away the tiniest amount of hair so that there's some exposed wig cap and then pluck a few hairs on either side of the shaved line to thin it out a bit. You then cover up the cap with foundation so it matches your skin tone.

Another option is to use something to cover foam bits where that fibrous stuff is, like bungee cord or some type of tubing glued down to the foam to cover it. (This option would have another body suit underneath to attach the corded panels to.) It'd be a lot of work but I think it would look really cool. It would be neat to use airline tubing covered in that weird rave hair shit, I think it'd look really futuristic.

The fabric idea is definitely not bad, but IMO the only way to really get the fibrous look is to go all out. You could also design that pattern and get it printed on some fabric, though imo the crinkly fabric would look better as it would have depth that a printed fabric would lack. Cotton gauze may be a good place to start in terms of search terms for that crinkly fabric. You could also get yourself some pleather and batting foam and essentially quilt the lines in for the depth, just another idea. You could also take upholstery piping and cover that with fabric and either glue it down to a base or sew it down in lines (the stuff is pretty cheap in tiny diameters if you can buy it by the yard at your local fabric shop).

Not to be a party pooper but vinyl and gauze won’t work for a body suit. Neither have stretch so they won’t conform to your body. Plus the vinyl is stiff and will trap your body heat and sweat in so you’ll be uncomfortable pretty fast.

As far as searching goes, better would be to find a wig shop and narrow from there - that is, go to a site like Epic Cosplay or Arda and go Short Wigs > Blonde and then browse those results - rather than just going to Amazon or Ebay and searching "short blond mens wig".
One plus side of buying a more general wig is that you can reuse it, I have a generic "shaggy black wig" that I've pinned and restyled to use for easily a half-dozen full cosplays and costests.

OTOH there's certainly nothing wrong with buying a wig "meant" for a different character, I've certainly taken a similar approach before. My recommendation is to check for a few things to make sure the seller is legit:
>Look through the pictures. Are there images of the wig from multiple angles? Sometimes the multiple photos are clearly of a different product, or are just stolen from cosplayers, meaning you should steer clear
>Are there reviews? Either for the seller (on ebay) or the product. Look for customer reviews that include photos rather than bot-like 5-star copypasta ratings
>For third-party sites, search the storefront name on Twitter or Instagram. Cosplayers will often share the site they purchased a costume part from, if you don't see anything I'd think twice before buying

That's a totally reasonable concern, and as a guy who's still never cut actual hair I have been in your shoes before. But even if you buy "a Genos wig" it's not going to come out of the bag looking like picrel so you'll probably have to do a bit of cleanup anyway. I'm not familiar with Keiji but he looks to have a very naturalistic look (I'm assuming you're not planning to style dozens of spikes), and ime doing some very basic trimming and styling is easy and makes a wig feel much less "wig-like".
The first half of this video isn't as relevant but the "feathering" thinning is something I do at least a little bit to almost every wig. Combine that with a wide-toothed comb and some blow-drying and you're good.

I recommend you buying the shittiest, cheapest wig you can find with a similar style and practicing with it, even better if you buy more than one.
You are highly likely to mess up, cut too much and ruin the wig on your first try, so practicing a bit beforehand comes a long way. Get your bad wig, cut it following the tutorial of your choosing, and, once you are done, do it again but with a shorter length. That way you can practice more than once per wig.
