That's pretty true.
I thought maybe it's was nostalgia glasses but its not.

Cons were far far better before everyone had on a metric ton of make up.
Better before mass production meant you saw the same 4 Genshin Impact costumes from China.
Better before because when you saw someone cosplaying from the same series you'd would be talking for at least 20 minutes as you talked about the series you both loved. And far less likely they were jealous.
Better before tits and ass were all a particular cosplayer would do.

>> No.10711347

>>10711203
Back when you could go up to someone cosplaying from a series you knew and you could guarantee they had seen it because there was no other reason to make the damn costume. And you HAD to make it unless you knew someone local or had a shit ton of money - commission and orders from China weren't a thing.

Everyone wanted to help everyone, tutorials and tricks were posted en masse on cosplay.com or in geocities blogs. You could message a cosplayer and they would be eager to tell you how they managed to do something, not guarding their tricks like the holy grail.

"Famous" cosplayers were the ones who won contests and were only famous in their local scene. And only to those also in the know - other than that they were just normal fans like the rest of the attendees.

I miss old cons.

I'm from the late 90s so no a metric ton of make up was not the norm.

Heck, lots of people didn't even wear any because the character didn't appear to wear any so they didn't either. Or the cosplayer was fairly young and they just weren't into that in regular life so they didn't in cosplay either.

Now the norm is a LOT of foundation, always contour, always lashes, nearly always contact lenses, lots of eyeliner, make up on the wig too.

Now you need that caked on make up unless you want people to ignore you or call you ugly for being person with pores or not having the same nose/lip/eye shape as the character.

>> No.10732666

>>10732661
So basically cons in the 90s and early 2000s were just people having fun running around in outfits and not worrying about make up, getting likes, or doing photoshots, or making cosplay a job. You're saying it was just about having fun?

>>10732661
For one thing, it's weird to blame makeup as a part of the downfall. If anything, makeup improved the look of the cosplay but I'm not saying those that didn't wear makeup weren't fun either. It's like blaming wearing a corset under a costume, it's silly. No, the real downfall of cosplay as we've discussed many times in other threads is the desire for more and more sexy than appreciation for the character. Companies would hire skimpy booth girls to lure people in. Others saw the profit in how easy it is to get money from desperate otaku and joined in. Men kept paying more for tiddies of a slutty version of characters and less and less attention for craftmanship and accuracy was cheered.

There are still people that do run around without makeup and wigs for fun, but to be honest these days people who are not part of the scenes for fanservice cosplay have improved. Makeup and wig care being part of the improvement and fun because it's a challenge to try to look like the character or the version you're trying to pull off. But you don't need it. You can still go without if you want to but a lot of people rather not.

Again the real issue is money and simps.
