Do you think these days the shape of the hobby has changed to the point that cosplay itself is a sort of pornography? To me it seems remarkably similar to softcore porn, both in intent and execution. More than that though, cosplayers seem to have a sort of reputation for being promiscuous and camwhoring. I've heard guys say that if you want an easy lay you should hit up cons and cosplayers.

I'm not sure how we counteract this reputation. But it makes me sad.

I like to cosplay and try to be more modest about it at cons. That said, I'm still holding true to "cosplay is a nerd activity," and I'm equally sad that OP's pretty much right to the general public it feels like it's slowly becoming associated with porn before it's associated with "nerds having fun." It's like what happened to the concept of "nudism," porn sites etc started posting "HOT NUDIST XXX" completely disregarding that most larger nudist movements were based on either personal health, returning to nature, or personal comfort, not overtly sexual displays. But who cares, the people want tits and erect penis in their face, and so they keep using it.
We sex up everything in society. So many things could be acceptable. So many things could be innocent. But in the end, coomer always wins. And I hate it with a passion.
Hopefully cosplay doesn't *fully* go down that route in the eyes of the general public. It was kind of amazing the first time I went to a con because I'm weeb trash, but fully on edge wondering if I was going to run into something too revealing for me to handle, and by the end of the first day I was able to walk by Nudist Beach cosplayers and a really skimpy Poison Ivy without even flinching.
Here's hoping enough people don't become such coomers that we can't continue to enjoy nice things.

All cosplayers are, to some degree, attention whores (speaking as a cosplayer). However, it's all dependent on what sort of attention you want; do you want literal bottom-of-the-barrel "omg booba" attention, with shitty low qual sexy cosplays? Do you want a mix, by making your own sexy cosplays? Do you want attention from other craftspeople, by making your own cosplays?

The other concern is that it's very easy to rotate to cosplay as a generic camwhore and BOOM, you instantly expand your market to a group of people that is heavily peppered with simps that are willing to drop big cash. On top of that, you can literally put in the least amount of effort (with some shitty D.va body suit or a crappy Zero Two cosplay you bought off Aliexpress), and /still/ get simps supporting you and your efforts because the cosplay community is excessively accepting (especially of girls). Hire some 2nd rate photog, have him run a couple filters on your pics, and now you're a "cosplayer" not just a camwhore. What you're making is "art", not pornography. From the perspective of a camwhore, literally why wouldn't you start to "cosplay"? It's an awesome idea.

The real concern isn't with girls doing this, but with guys accepting and encouraging this sort of shit. Simps are a true scourge.

Ahahahahaha I think you spelled Yaya Han wrong anon. She's one of the ones who had some of the best craftsmanship. Unless JNig has gotten much better in the last few years since I remember seeing her awful eeveeloutions, the quality of the cosplays she made herself were always rough beginner to intermediate at best and she usually bought or ommissioned the good ones, sometimes with little to no credit so it would seem more like she did it herself. Her sexy Pikachu was what put her on the map to begin with and I'd hardly call that good craftsmanship. I think she was/is actually into most of the stuff she cosplays from though and she and other people from her and Yaya's generation really kickstarted the idea of "professional cosplayer" as a career in a way that has sort of stuck.

Honestly though as cringe as Belle Delphine is to me, I think people like her just make it obvious that so many people (especially men) in nerdy communities don't care about quality or whatever else, they just want to see whatever their definition of a hot woman is, preferably in a nerdy costume, and always have. I've been cosplaying since the late 90s and I watched it go from celebrating technical prowess to occasional swimsuit cosplay to always wearing a swimsuit to watch me do lewds.

I was just thinking yesterday, looking at old anime magazines, how much more wholesome cons were a decade or two ago even though they were also creepy and cringe. Back when cosplayers were mostly out of shape/looked like total spergs and not at all like their character, and the wigs were terrible nylon bushes, and the clothes were shoddily made using all the wrong and cheapest fabrics. I think that, to be a cosplayer back then, you HAD to be a huge fucking nerd who loved an obscure series so much that you didn't care about your lack of looks or skill. If you were good looking and/or a skilled craftsperson, you were a gift from god, but even then you either A) didn't take yourself too seriously and saw it as a fun Halloween-y costume, or B) were not self aware at all but damn do you love that series too much to not dress up.

And you have to consider how much harder it is the get your hands on anime the further back in time you go, between shitty internet speeds and lack of networks, or full on having to trade tapes and DVDs once a year at a con. So to even become a fan of a series, you already had to be in a niche club. THEN in order to make your costume, you might have to scroll through your video frame by frame to figure out the design. That already is a level of spergery that used to be concerning.

The very idea of a stinky room full of the absolute "worst of the worst" of nerds somehow turning into a popularity contest is fucked up. All those hot, popular, vapid people somehow coming around to your nerdy hobby once it's acceptable enough to make money off of. You were happy with your point-n-shoot flash shot with the ugly con carpet, but now it's full professional photoshoots with lighting and touch ups.
I mean, I literally saw a professional cosplayer have a breakdown on Instagram the other day because her costume didn't look good enough.

Many - if not most - trans people want to live as either a man or woman in such a way that they are indistinguishable from cis men and women. They do not want to be visibly trans; they want to pass as the opposite gender in any public context. They want to be "invisible".

So conflict arises when someone says that women's issues are different than trans issues, or that trans people should not compete in sports, or use the bathroom they identify with, etc. because if these beliefs are put into law, it places limitations on where trans people can live as their self-described authentic selves; what parts of society they are allowed to pass as the gender they believe themselves to be.

No idea why it has to be shoved in here too. When I started cosplaying in the late 90s it was very clear cons were a break from the norm for fans. We could be creative and judged less on looks and social compatibility.

But oh look, a group figured out they could be a big fish in a little pond. And they made the hobby focus on looks, photoshoots, churning out content, lewds, ect.

This is my first time on this board. I'm not interested in cosplay, I'm literally checking it because I'm trying not to look at actual porn but I want to look at women.
