They really are, I've seen all kinds from subtle nods to a character's outfit/theme that's passable for normie wear, to 3D chibi art and manga art and even people straight up glueing acrylic keyholders to their nails (RIP).
IMO it's a really cute trend and I'm working on a set for myself.

Itabag thread how I've missed thee... Here's one that I put together recently! He's the cook/baker of the group so I thought the microwave bag would be perfect and I'm pretty happy with it! The bag is super nice quality too, a lot sturdier than I was expecting.

I'm going to get some little fake carnations (his flower) to fill the gaps and for the oven on the side I want to stick a tray of miniature food in it, then I'm going to add some lights. Thinking of decorating the outside with maybe some lace so it's reminiscent of whipped cream but I'm not 100% set on what I want to do yet.

I have some deco whip at home and I've also considered buying a whipped cream mould on taobao (so I don't have to pipe it myself...) but I thought it might be too chunky and awkward to put on the bag which is why I'm now considering lace.

Can we get a look at your merch? For ship bags I usually do half one character half another character or try to have some sort of symmetry by putting merch with similar artwork/poses opposite each other, or buying multiples of the same merch to force symmetry that way. You can also introduce your own colour palette with decorations

Sure. I was the JoJo anon from the last thread who was looking for ideas on a Caejose bag. I have a few more buttons coming in for Joseph, so I’m mainly worried about having a disproportionate amount of merch on his side and not enough on Caesar’s to pull off perfect symmetry.

As for the base bag, originally I wanted to aim for a green tote or small backpack, but I’m having a hard time finding a bag that looks sturdy and fits my style. It would be a nice bonus if it had a star motif, but so far I haven’t been able to find anything that isn’t one of those really generic star-window bootlegs from Amazon.

Honestly I think these colours work fine. Pink/blue/green look good together. I also like >>10657540 's idea of using sunflowers. Maybe you could also add some red gem accents to complement the bag charm you have there.

I'm liking the layout you already have here so if you're worried about having too much Joseph merch you could pin them on the outside of your bag, like in a separate pouch or on the straps. You could maybe even make straps that look like Caesar's headband and Joseph's scarf. If you're worried about things not complementing each other, another approach you could take is do a 180 and making everything really crazy and colourful (especially since JJBA is known for its wacky colours anyway).

Also good ideas! I think I’m going to go for white and yellow so I can play up the sunflower motif. I have a great piece of merch on the way that I was thinking of arranging some smaller badges around like flower petals, maybe with a yellow rosette to mimic the flower’s disc.

When I had a friend that did this, I just bought them stuff that would improve it for holidays or their birthday or whatever. Too much blank space? Get them badges or keychains. Ugly base bag, terrible layout, or tacky decorations? Get them a new bag.

If their issue is knock off merch, talk to them about why it's better to support the original creators and explain that a bag that's meant to show love for the character/series should support the series.

If their taste in characters is shit, I can't help ya there.

Maybe get them some filler decorations that would cover up the insert a bit? Or if you're out and see some fabric that would go perfectly, make them a new insert? Most people aren't gonna think you did that because you think theirs is ugly, especially if you get things that really match the character.

A lot of people are really bad at colour theory and don't understand how merch should pop or look against something in the background. I'd say the insert is the least worrisome part if the rest of the bag looks fine.

If you have a lot of green merch especially (considering that his outfit is green too) getting a green bag would make it too monotonous so getting a colour like brown that would complement it nicely would be a better option. Otherwise, black and white are safe options that would match any character.

Pet peeve but the exposed lobster clasps kind of annoy me (bags with whole entire keyrings left visible are even worse). Lobster clasps are okay on crowded bags because the other merch helps divert attention from them but on a sparse bag like this they stand out way too much. The most hardware I would have exposed are jump rings. Everything else gets taken off. Putting safety pins through jump rings as opposed to bulkier hardware minimises their visibility too so its a win-win.

Oh hey I ordered one of these. I don't have an expert's eye, but I can at least give you my perspective for what I was looking for in the bag.
Seems like a reasonable con bag to me. I can fit my laptop, cord, and probably a portable (maybe DS, maybe Switch) in it easy enough. Then once I've left those in the hotel room it looks like there's plenty of space for whatever junk I decide to buy. I'm seeing roughly 16 inches depth from the bottom of the bag to the middle of the zipper, but towards the sides of the bag it look more like 14 (maybe 13?) inches. Looks like it's about 11 inches across at the lower points, but it decreases to about 8 or 9 inches near the top. So there's a limit on how big of a print you can fit in here.There is a flap inside the main compartment to help sort things, it's probably a good place to put the bulkier knickknacks you wouldn't want jumbling around with any art you buy. I'm gonna use it to hold a pad of paper and some dice. There's also a layer of padding on the side that'll be against your back, which is nice. I've used some cheap backpacks in the past that don't have that and it's not fun.
There's a pouch on each side for a bottle, but they seem kind of tight. I don't know if you're going to fit much more than a standard 20 ounce bottle or a tall can in these, but maybe I'm wrong.
Pin compartment's pretty nifty. Two zippers so you can open it however you need and the flap you stick the pins to has access on the left and right sides, so I didn't have to do that awkward reach to try and get something into the far corner. There's also a zipper inside here, but the pouch it opens is extremely small. I've got a pencil in there, might be able to fit another pen or two but not much else. I don't think it has much purpose besides being able to attach something to the tab.
The material feels decent, but I can't really know that until I give it a good field test. I don't know about every day use, but it should be fine for cons.

Sounds like a bad idea, trading card sleeves are made with very specific measurements in mind so you either won't have any space to cut holes in or if you do you'll have too much space around the card. Just buy covers like >>10655254 (brand is コアデ) or search 卡保护套 on taobao

It's only really considered 'taboo' if it's like a character with thousands of choices (ie: Osomatsu, bnha, sailor moon, etc) and even then fanmerch bags can look very cute I think.

I like your idea of filling the space with decorations over getting more merch! Also sorry for the shitty edit I hope you don't mind but this is personally how I would arrange the badges and where I would put some of the extra decorations (basically just spread the badges out a little so they don't make the bottom too "heavy" and take the focus away from the rest of the bag. As a precaution, be careful with glue dots or adhesive velcro, sometimes the adhesive can melt and cause the back of charms to get sticky or worse... could peel the print off the charm.

Yes this is true! Good point to raise for those who are looking into using these for the first time.

For velcro I only use it for charms where the print is sealed (such as double epoxy charms) or on badges, and for glue dots I have used one on a charm on its unsealed print and it came off fine but as a precaution I only put it on the very edge and on as little of the print as possible. A lot of my merch tends to overlap so sometimes I'll put the glue dot on the top surface of a charm and stick it to the underside of a badge to keep it in place (pic related).

You can also seal the print with a good nail polish topcoat but just a word of warning, sometimes the polish can dissolve the print so be very careful (I've had more charms be fine than not but I DID damage one even though I used the same polish for the ones that didn't dissolve. Luckily it's not too noticeable).

If you don't want to use adhesives or sew through the loop at the top you can also just put a jump ring through it and then pin the jump ring onto your insert from the back with a safety pin. Easy, reusable, and looks clean.

I haven't had that problem glue dots but I've had it with double sided sticky tape, it didn't stick to the bag and melted onto the charm so it was doubly crap. I'd never use adhesives on charms that don't have acrylic on the back though, a tip for that though, if use a charm guard or a trading card sleeve etc to put it in then put the adhesive on the guard.

I'd say ins are probably the best things for an ita bag because you don't need to get anything else to secure them down. Depending on how big your bag is it might be a little heavy if they're enamel pins so I'd just make sure the insert/fabric can handle that.

Probably going to get a shitload of flak for asking this, but fuck it. Does anyone have any advice for a trans man looking to incorporate an ita bag into his wardrobe? I’ve been collecting merch for my fav for over a year now and would love to make a small bag dedicated to him that I can use for daily life, but none of the popular base bags really work for me. It's my mum's birthday next month and she has been on an Aliexpress binge recently. She saw this - or something very similar to it - on Ali and said she really liked it and was in the market for a new handbag, although I think that was more owing to the cat shape than the window. Anyway, I thought it might make a nice gift if I bought one and customized it for her. She not being into anime or anything makes it a bit more difficult, however. She's usually open to generic cute dangly things like those plush rabbit keychains you see everywhere, small cats or dogs etc.

I'm not really sure what I'm searching for with this post but if anyone can suggest a store that sells a more conservative version of this handbag, or things to fill it with that aren't related to a particular fandom, I would be grateful. Some of the examples in this thread are quite impressive but too over the top for what I'm looking for. I'm well versed with ordering from both Taobao and Rakuten or other Japanese stores so the source doesn't really matter, nor the price.

Disgusting. But no, not because of the bags; but because of my willingness to respect the character more than his shitty fans are physically capable of. I do however, feel like it's flexing to have a bag loaded with tons of official merch and I honestly love it. I've put more effort and love into these bags than they have into the hideous bootlegs they use in their knockoff shitabags. But it's what he deserves and I would never do less.

As for the flexing part, kind of, I guess. Flexing and itabagging go hand in hand because it's ultimately a hobby of excessive consumption. I've made multiple bags where there isn't really anyone to flex on because the series/character(s) are obscure but it still becomes a disposable income flex. I don't actively try to flex on others or have the flex mindset (because to me personally itabagging is more about the artistry of creating a coherent layout, as wanky as that sounds, and even if I had no one to show the bags to I'd still itabag). However, regardless of whether you try to flex or not, I think by nature of carrying an itabag and having other people see it, you participate in flexing.

However, if I see an obnoxious fan and think yeah you wish you had a bag like mine I'll allow myself to gloat, lol

Stupid question that I need help with.
Is there any place to buy lots of different rosette badge holders like pic related? (Not sure what the right word is) I really like the ribbon rosette type and have only found maybe two pre-made kinds on aliexpress.

I would say before itabagging really blew up a few years ago my impression of it was that it was male-dominated with pic related and others being passed around a lot. Whether you look "ridiculous" or not will just depend on what you think about carrying around a bunch of anime merch regardless of gender (I use my itabags outside of cons so idgaf)

Thanks guys. I was first introduced to it by examples like that last photo but I didn't really associate it with the examples posted here which are a bit more subtle. My available choices for base bags are a bit more limited so I'll probably just go with a transparent PVC outer canvas tote bag, as much as I like the Wego options.

I would say yes avoid a light blue insert if most of your merch is the same colour. I think your idea so far is fine. You could also consider a white base with inserts like white again or light purple with some orange decorations here and there to evoke the scene where he uses his Domain Expansion.

I should clarify the character is Rina Tennoji, while her image color is white there's also a lot of grey merch for her. I saw a bag ITT which wasn't sanrio-themed, but had a sanrio base bag. This is where my main idea came from, I intend to have a bit more merch in it than picrel though. I was planning to have a picture-frame of Kuromi to hold some of the postcards I have, since the picture frame is grey/white/black. So in a way... kinda?

I've also seen pictures of bromides and the like inside pass cases, so if you have any small postcards and are able to find a Kuromi pass case, that could be another way alongside the frame you're already planning.

If you're not set on the Rina/Kuromi theme, you could use a black lace-up base and swap the ribbons out for bright pink ones to match her hair and board, unless you want to follow the monochrome scheme.

I have these character cards that came with some of the CDs that could fit into them, if not I might just end up buying some of the Rina postcards that exist, since there really are a lot. I was thinking of using this one specifically, because of the variety in greys, it reminds me a bit of her 4th live outfits!
