Help a Vtuber please

I know every board besides /vt/ hates vtubers but I would like to hear opinions and get help. The concept that I’m going for is a magical girl blended with some Yami Kawaii/Guro lolita elements to it. The first one is the magical girl form (I can’t decide what sleeves I should give her) and the second one is the normal one. I would appreciate to hear opinions or thoughts. Things in red are supposed to be lace.

The magical girl form looks too much like random harajuku fashion right now. Take some tropes from magical girl media, like a sailor skirt of bell-shaped silhouette. Short puff sleeves and either longer, more elegant boots or small cute mary jane type shoes. Think of a weapon too. Good luck.

Looks pretty good, can see the appeal. Design reminds me a bit of Yumemi Riamu, or Yakui.

If you do end up going the vtuber route, just be aware of what words/phrases will get videos demonetized on playforms like Youtube or Twitch: as a number of drugs or drug-related words/phrases are blacklisted by their algorithm.

I can see where you’re coming from (and I know people always say this when they have shitty anatomy) but that’s just how I like to do legs. Besides, it doesn’t bother me that much because most vtubers have really awkward legs anyways since they have to face the front. Just take a look at I don’t know, Usada Pekora or Polka, most of the time they either look like midgets or like they are broken.

While it's not colored both designs look very similar, try to take inspiration from shows like Precure or Tokyo Mew Mew where maybe the magical is more intense pastel whole the casual is more toned down. This really goes for the rest as well, with hairstyle and instead of A-line skirt on the magical version, make fluffy, go crazy.

While I do agree, that this isn't necessarily on topic for this board, I'll toss my hat in the ring too. When looking at your designs, I don't see "magical girl on the left and normal on the right", I see two jfashion looks. As some of the anons mentioned, it's missing the Magical Girl silhouette. While I think the shoes are cute, they lend themselves more to alt fashion than magical girls -- they're a lil too thick. I think choosing mary janes like you mentioned in another comment would be cute or heels with bows, knee high boots, etc. And just puff out the skirt, add more sparkles, lace, bows, etc. Perhaps making the hair more dynamic just in that form could help too. Anyway, I'll be the bold one here and say I really like your art style and drawing. It's very cute

I followed the advice and made it fluffier and tried to go more for that magical girl silhouette. Also changed the shoes. I don't know if I should add more things or details in the middle, or leave it a little bit empty like that so it doesn’t feel overwhelming in some way.

The improvements you made are cute, you might wanna add bows to the shoes. Something about the bows on the skirt seem off to me, I can tell if they're on the sides of the front or if they are on the side of the skirt, in line with the legs if you looked at her from the side. She also looks a little knock-kneed.

I think you should try drawing a turnaround for the character. It would help you with placing details.

I'm thinking about adding the "print" I made in the first design to the empty parts to bring a bit of the vibe back, but I don't know if it would be too much, I don't want to make it look too crowded. I'll probably add bandages or bandaids too.

I think the redesign is a huge improvement but I’m coming in to say no print. I think the print was a big issue with the first design as well. Surface details don’t add as much to a character design as the shape and prints are really hard to do right. At most maybe a something like a cross on each of the two pleats running up the side of the dress, but my two cents is no print

If you wanted to add other interest to the dress without a print, you can do a bow around the waist, tied in the back or add pleats. The print would be too much!

If you wanted guro/Yami elements, bandaids and eye patches are sometimes worn as accessories. Or you could incorporate them in jewelry, accessories or weapons.

The normal version I'm leaving it as it is I think. I like it at the moment. And yes! I'm just going to add more bows, and I'm thinking about maybe adding two heart "patches" with lace around the edge and a cross in the middle. Something like the image.

No no, almost all companies do (unless they are a really black and shady company that makes the talents pay for it, there has been a lot of them popping out lately) but the one I'm applying to does provide them! They just aren't like big companies like Hololive that most of the time have a model ready for you and you're just stuck with it, they actually work with the talent to create and design the character. They are very laid back and transparent, even providing equipment for the streamers. I just want to include the speedpaint of the design I have in mind for my character on my audition tape so they can tell that I'm excited about it and have a lot of love for the vtubing world. They talked about appreciating and looking for excitement and hard work, so I want to show them that and maybe at least get to the interview part because I really like watching the vtubers from said company, so joining would be a dream. There is nothing guro lolita on this design. Both are sightly inclined to a menhera look, but in the end it looks like a Mikan Tsumiki meets Usami rip off. I advise you to research actual guro lolita coordinates if it's the road you want to go, decide if you want that twisted mahou shoujo looks or this will just only look like a Danganronpa OC made by an underage on twitter.

Get rid of the stupid horns, and I'm pretty sure this is requests. I like horns, but every goddamn VT character has horns or some feature that make it look like some sort of sparkle dog.

If she's gonna' be a magical girl, she needs an outfit that screams magic like a giant magical syringe or something. Rainboots don't scream magic to me. She also isn't going to be doing too much in such a stuffy top.

The magical girl outfits should have more pop. Otherwise, make her look like a normal girl in j-fashion.

Keep the striped socks with the lace from the first image though. Those were nice. Striped socks with this skirt style.

Take the top back to drawing board so it's less cliché. It's that bow on the blouse. The top needs more oomph, but not that kind of oomph.

I guess if you just want an honest suggestion. I dunno'. I'd maybe just use a bow for a choker & add fingerless, long gloves... well, I would say to match the striped socks, but actually to match the rest of the blouse and (skirt in second photo) would be better.

Honestly, I'd say go with something less juvenile for the blouse and more form-fitting with a lower neckline and more fitted waist. I'm not saying cleavage, but something that shows the shoulders more.

So, striped/lace socks from first, skirt from second, and then rework the top with long, fingerless gloves, shrink & move the bow to a choker, and make the blouse more fitted, honestly part of the skirt itself as a one-piece dress, and show the shoulder/collar area more.

The gloves actually don't have to be fingerless. Oh, and, of course, she needs some sort of magic tool whether a giant wand, cross, staff, syringe or something.

And then of course for causal, regular j-fash.

I think it would be good to make the two 'forms' different enough that it's clear one is her normal clothes and the other is a magical girl outfit. But, I mean, it's not my VT character so I'm no authority.

And to explain my last sentence, what I mean by 'two forms different enough'. In the OP image, you can't actually distinguish one is a magical form and one is casual. It looks like two outfits for the same purpose.

Magical girls have eye catching outfits different from their normal clothes which is why I'm partially suggesting use the skirt from the second as the base for a more-fitted up-top one-piece dress that's her 'magical fighting costume' with the other unique accessories like the striped socks and gloves. It'd help make that distinction.

And I've not given any input on the second, the left side, of OP drawing because there's nothing really wrong with it outside nitpicks. It does just look like a girl wearing regular j-fashion.

My only nitpick is it looks a little like someone took a photo of a girl from the old menhera threads and stuck it on the top half of Lor wearing lolita. I don't think the socks, shoes, and garter match well with the chiffon sleeves of the lolita dress, but, again, that's entirely nitpick. It's not as if I'd reprimand someone for wearing it real life. So, I don't see any issue with that really. I did see issue with the magical variation's design though.

And of course, I don't like the floof horns and feel they're unneeded, too much, and that her ahoge, the hair sticking up, is more then enough to give it the quirky cute quality it needs to stand out to the VT audience.

I made some of the changes you mentioned, and I don't know if this is something like what you meant with the top part (I'm more of a visual person) but I already like it way more. If it's not, I would appreciate a picture to use for reference. I have the two options of the long gloves (The lace glove one was just to put the idea there, it would be on both hands obviously and I think could work on either) I think I like the first one more, though. (Anatomygafs give me one second I just want to get the general idea down, it's not the final product.)

Yeah, that is what I meant regarding the top with it of course open for your creative freedom. Admittedly, not digging the mini lace glove idea in the second. I am, however, digging everything about the first. (The bow on the front does look much better too being not so large. It works. It's no longer comical or the first thing your eye is drawn to.) Shrunk down, it works on the front of the blouse.

I'd take the first & go with it from there fleshing out a final & clean version. Definitely looks like a magical girl ready to heal souls & battle evil now.

And don't get discouraged by character design or people being angry. If you ever do get discouraged, just pick up some old manga & look through the extras in the back.(Sometimes they show the concept sketches.) Often the characters originally looked nothing like the popular characters everyone knows & loves.

Natsuki from Hyper Police & Zero Two from Darling in the Franxx being two characters that looked nothing at all like their final designs when they were first sketched out.

So, just remember that all the world's favorite characters usually started out with a idea that looked nothing like the final version, and have to be reworked usually down to even Studio Trigger's characters.
