Foreign Outfits in Japan

I wonder why the playboy bunny uniform burrowed so deep into the Japanese conscious that it became a staple "sexy outfit" in japans culture. it's even more prevalent than nurse outfits "for recreational purposes" and pretty much on par with maids. and even those two are just skimpy versions of something that already exists. Only other outfit that exist as it's own thing and not just a "sexy" version of something else that I can think of would be the belly dancer outfit, and it does show up in anime and japanese games. but definitely not to the same degree. would anyone happen to have some insight on it, or even have more styles and outfits similar to the two mentioned?

I agree with qipao & race queen. Adding Luau outfits & beer maiden outfit. (Lederhosen too.)

I'm going to tell you that a lot likely has to do with game show history, love hotels, & everything branching from weird entertainment.

And if you're curious about why love hotels. Well, most love hotels are themed & Bodyline use to be a popular store for cheap lingerie costumes among younger adults.

Because of the need to immerse oneself in fantasy to break away from the packed city life especially in places like Tokyo, things like costumes catch on. It's not surprising that Japan has these fantasy costumes commonplace.

Also, don't forget that Japan was occupied too after the war, and that led to people seeing a lot of kitschy things like Playboy magazines from soldiers & French maids in film.
