MCM is the largest turnout and is good if you want to show off cosplay or see other cosplayers and focuses on comic-books (and some normie anime), so most anime-centric people go just to see friends because literally everyone goes. They also hold the WCS shows and such so that's important.
Then there's the smaller scale cons like Kitacon, Amecon, Hibanacon etc. which are more anime-orientated and are socialable, ideal for making friends
Then there's stuff like AnimeLeague events which advertise like an anime-centric MCM, but run by a pedo so you should avoid them

Didn't go with friends (partly because I don't have any), so I decided to pass the time by doing a bit of "cosplay-spotting" (or I guess a bingo of sorts), based on who I thought people were likely to dress as. Got 9 out of the 15 I thought would show up.

Last year all cons were offering a full refund if you couldn't attend because of rona, I imagine for all the reasons already given in this thread. I think it’s more the time frames they’ve chosen for the refunds. (Being 6 months out seems a lot to hold back so much). Having said that, as it’s a new con I think they set the price low to guarantee a sell out and are now having issues that if they get too many drop outs due to the coof they can’t afford to refund the whole amount and still have enough spare to actually run the event, hence the current refund policy.
