They're exactly the same. Quite literally, Dangan Ronpa first became popular on tumblr through Homestuck fans, and it has somehow remained 'the thing' for edgy middle schoolers to get into as their first fandom since about 2013.

That said, I give kids a pass for being cringy and as long as they aren't causing too much of a ruckus at a con. If we're talking about adult fans, it's a mixed bag of them being a completely normal person who cares about a popular series, or someone who is still mentally an edgy 13 year old. The latter type are the ones that will bring the drama.

Most fandoms are filled with drama these days honestly. The more people in the fandom, the more unpleasant people you’ll run into. It’s pretty bad with most fandoms these days because zoomers and underagers feel the need to call out random users for the dumbest shit. (Rip my main fandom that got ruined by kpop zoomers)

I'm not too experienced with cosplay, but I am a zoomer, so this is based on what I've seen.

Avoid like the plague. Not only is the fandom primarily made up of kids, but the fans are rabid. Lots of fujoshis willing to fight people who have straight ships, and lots of people who take the anime way too seriously. I remember an incident on TikTok when it became a trend to wipe period blood and tampons on merch of characters that people were attracted to, with some people wiping their blood on a 8 year old character's merch. However, I will admit I enjoy some MHA character designs, so if you're into the anime it's probably best if you cosplay less popular characters and avoid cosplaying Bakugo, Todoroki, Deku, Toga, Uraraka, etc.

Once again, avoid. The Danganronpa fandom is like the MHA fandom times 10. Lots of edgy kids who just discovered murder, lots of people obsessed with the characters. I don't know if it was fake or not, but I remember a drama on TikTok where a girl cut her finger off because she believed she was a character. There's a ton of aggressive simps in the community who will do anything to be with their husbands. (The period blood incident extended to this community as well).

Some general signs that a fandom is bad based on what I've observed are

I actually cosplayed Hetalia in 2019 and had absolutely no problems. I brought back an old costume for nostalgia with a friend and the only people who recognized us were other nostalgic fans and one teenager cosplaying Italy who was very happy to see another Hetalia fan.

I'm sure you'll be fine as long as you're not literally doing nazi salutes and screaming "PASTA" like the worst of the fans from pre-2011.

Overly fixated on shipping characters (including characters that literally have canonic straight love interests). It's chock full of middle school fujos. Like >>10636406 said, there's a LOT of really unhinged kids there, and they don't really know how to behave. I cosplayed a character from the third game like ~3 years ago, and I felt like a fish outta water at the photoshoot. I love doing group shoots but afterwards, told myself I'd never do dangan again because of how unkempt the kids at the shoot were.

That and MHA are a total bummer, because the character designs are really, really nice. It's just that the communities are full of godawful shippers.

I don't think Fate has a terrible community, but FGO (and more recently, Genshin) have a L O T of people cosplaying characters because of the hype rather than their love for the character, but that's just a me thing. Kind of comes with the territory of being popular I guess.

To add to this anon's post regarding Danganronpa, young fans often idolize characters they like in media. Danganronpa is a series full of characters that are anywhere from narcissistic to deranged. The characters have extreme traits to make them easily understandable especially since they could die at any moment. It's easy to be very interested in a character that only has a short screen time when all of their behavior is obnoxiously iconic. Now you have children, teenagers and immature adults all trying to replicate this behavior.

Can attest to this on the East Coast. We had a lot of shit going around at Anime Boston among Power Rangers cosplayers and several cosplay groups that would give each other shit regularly for not spending more money on their costumes. It escalated into a number of broken up friendships, lots of feuds, and one bar fight. There was a point where the broader Tokusatsu/Sentai/Kamen Rider guys got unwillingly dragged into it and immediately made efforts on various social media to distance themselves from this bullshit.

I cosplayed from Dangan Ronpa back in 2015. I got accosted by some cosplayer because they mistook me for a different Ishimaru and started screaming at me in front of everyone about me how I "iinvalidated their DID on tumblr". I had no idea what happened kek. Then they found the other cosplayer they were looking for and screamed at them instead.
Also, I was attacked online by fictionkin for cosplaying as their kin and "triggering" them. And then I got stalked for months by someone who shipped the characters we were cosplaying. That was when I stopped cosplaying Dangan Ronpa.

All of these often have pre-made outfits they buy and then think they are the best cosplayers, but most are fucking jokes. Well, if you think about it cosplay is about looking good and showing off. Back in the day, you would still have feuds between groups or individuals who wanted to be “the best” or be part of the in-crowd. In the time of cosplay.com you’d have flamewars between regional cosplayers, not even fandoms or coms. To my knowledge Matt Mercer was the only cool guy in the “in crowd” and even then I know he was a huge man whore.
Now you factor that into the modern day instagram, onlyfans, twitch and general simp culture and it’s a recipe for drama.

Cringe is subjective. In most fandoms the cringe is generally based on over-sexualization. That's why Furries have been the default cringe community for so long. Asshattery is the second most common form of cringe. Edgy is the third most common type. Waifu/Hasbundo is typically the fourth.

If we talk about most of the commonly mentioned groups we see two common factors, characters where personal interaction is important to the series and thus bromances are common. Homestuck for example is a mix of shipping and edgy. BHNA is a combination of shipping and Waifu/Husbando. Danganropan mixes shipping, edgy and asshattery. Bronies mix nearly all of it with the edgy part being completely fandom-produced and being a rare case of womances.

I think any fandom has it's decent people and cases of autistic sperglords. It's really not fair to judge a community on their sperglords because hell even as a brony myself I've met so many people in that community that I would not want to associate with. Homestuck is something I just straight up stay away from and would care not to associate with furries.

But cons aren't a place where we judge people for their interests. I remember a time when cosplaying was cringe. I remeber a time when reading comics was cringe. I rememeber a time when playing video games was cringe. It's supposed to be a place where we can indulge in our interests without the fear of judgement.

I really blame main stream culture accepting these things and thus allowing normies to invade the conspace as well as social media pushing professional cosplayers as the slow-death of the once tight-knit communities now being all about likes and followers as a sign of acceptance. People never read comics or played video games or watched anime to be popular. But now it's become so mainstream that not being caught up on the Marvel Cinematic Universe is like not watch sports back in the day.

Fate cosplayer and can confirm. anyone that cosplays anything is usually a fan and a clout-chaser, and it's very easy to spot who's heavier on the clout-chaser side in fate. It's always the fan service/popular characters that don't require a lot of effort that you see a ton of (ie. unarmored, little to no props, easily bought outfits) like Tamamo, Kiyohime, Astolfo, etc etc. For how popular Saber is, the difficulty in making her armor/weapon gatekeeps a lot of the blatant clout-chasers away.

Higurashi requires a lot of reading and it's a slow build up, DR follows a formula that gives you the option to skip the fluff. I imagine when the new anime comes out there will be a bit more people dressing up as them
As for the fate stuff, I agree that the people who dress up in the store bought stuff usually are in it for the attention. People who make there costumes are pretty cool and I generally haven't ran into any real issues, the community in my opinion is pretty chill. The only people I avoid are the astolfos with the purple jacket, for some reason they always have a superiority complex and tend to back talk others on social media.

I cosplay characters from FSN, and hate the gacha (especially because I'm a turbo Fate autist and I hate that a lot of stuff after F/HA watered the lore down) and don't play it. Makes a lot of the other FGO fans seethe at the shoots but idgaf. I would just go for it. If you're from the core cast, you'll probably most be interested in taking photos with the core cast anyways, right?
