Honestly it really depends where you live. Where I'm from, which is some place in Europe with natively white people, in the norm people wouldn't care about skin colour in itself nowadays. Each race has pretty and ugly people. Things like symetry, aging, etc matter much more. But I guess it really depends, don't doubt other places where racism is a bigger issue than here make it an issue. (also not saying there isn't any racism here, just that it's not as bad as we see on other places regularily). Point is, "conventional standards" aren't really a thing online as they change per country, although racist people being louder than those who aren't is generally a thing which more likely let's you feel like that, aside of possible the area you live.

But even on most lolita media, more people fakingly say they get told off for being black for pity points than that it actually happened. Which we generally know because they got outed.

Goths didn't even agreed what is the name for their sad/creepy punk music based subculture until like the mid '90s when term "goth" finally started to be most commonly used. Before that they called themselves different names depending on geographical location. USA were "deathrockers" most of continental Europe were "coldwavers" or "darkwavers" (dark wave became a term for synth based goth msic very recently, earlier it had wider meaning), Germans were "grufties" (because Germans were such a special snowflakes they must have invent own original names for every subculture at the time). And there is also ethereal branch that almost no one talks about. LOL.

Aestetical wise goth fashion and makeup got mangled by people who think goth is just a dark colored normiecore with perfect makeup and ast fashion clothing from online shops. Originally it was about looking creepy, dead, like spectre or the '70s horror kitchy medium or vampire. Not ironing your clothes before going to the club was expected by rules of community in some communities. Having imperfect semi smudged makeup was the point and protest against mainstream beauty standards. Clothing was thrifted and D.I.Y.

I have heard that some countries far far away had restrictions on outfits in some cities but I personally find it quiet cringy. If there were actual reasons for these rules it may have had a point. Here no outsider was actually interested in even entering club when they heard the music.

Sounds nice, we had issues with people doing that. Typically people in jncos who intentionally sagged, red/white laces and ex masquerade larpers who took it too far. Our codes weren't strict and if the bouncers knew you coming straight from work wasn't an issue. All of our locations were purchased by a large company and now the codes are gone. It doesn't matter as much because events aren't once to three times a week but once a month if were lucky now. It makes it less of a target for scummy people.

We have kind of split in the scene in the country I'm from - people who attend goth only events and people who attend mixed events where gothic rock is played together with industrial, ebm, agrotech etc. People who attend goth only have almost no desire to attend mixed events and these who attend mixed events are mostly clueless about existence of goth only nights. We have no dress code on either. There were like one or two attempts on introducing dress code by crowd organizing mixed event but people were tapping their foreheads and it was generally perceived as retarded idea. If anyone is kicked out it's on behavior basis, not look. If they are there from full random reasons and they don't bother anyone good for them they discover something new. Occasionally some of them came out to be into the music decades ago and were not even aware the scene is still alive in Europe. One of my friends once even attended in clothing looking like he went straight out of beach - t-shirt and shorts. No one was giving a fuck including these in full goff attire and strong trad makeup. Same on festivals or band gigs.

Of course the Cure is post punk, just like all gothic rock. Not all post punk is gothic tho. Some gothic bands also mixed in elements of other genres like prog rock, or some metal influences like in case of the Sisters of Mercy and the Fields of Nephilim.

Post punk (als known as new wave) is a broader category of music that emerged from experiments with punk music mixed with pop rock and electronic and synth music. Synthpop is also within post punk family of genres.

You like goth rock - you are goth. No matter how you dress or what other genres you enjoy. Many bands and goths dress pretty normie so clothing is just an optional addition.

There is no single set of rules of what hairstyle you are supposed to have, what to wear or how to do makeup. Trough the time many local scenes had own styles of dressing up evolved that differ from other countries or continents. There are some popular trends but they are just trends. Some of them emerge, other disappear. Like there were years when color was very popular and years when people wear mostly all black. There always were people in the scene who dressed in their own way other then trends with community as well as xeroboys and xero girls copying certain styles to the level some scenes looked like an army of clones. There are elegant vampires as well as punk zombies with cadaver style makeup and clothing torn apart. Cemetary ghosts and top hat undertakers as well as people who only wear turtle neck and jeans and no makeup. We are fat, we are slim, we are average, we are straight, we are gay, we are of different political affiliations etc. Only music as in enjoying goth rock genre is a common denominator that decides if you are goth or not. You don't have to like goth rock only.

As a metalhead who loves to dress like typical black metal look, I'm often confused for a goth while I know very little on the subject (beside knowing I'm not goth as at best I recognise a few bandnames when I hear them, and don't recall listening to any goth music ever) as I don't know any goths in real life. The '80s goth was a strong inspiration for a Scandinavian black metal scene among other things. Some of bands from that metal genre even recorded covers of gothic rock sings. Darkthrone covered one of Siouxie and the Banshees song "Love in Void"

I know. I've heard most covers but most have gotten a metal twist, altrough also many clearly are out of place as bonustracks on otherwise often full black metal albums. I don't consider knowing those covers re knowledge tho.

Underground metal culture has seemingly little in common with goth. Altrough we both have a "accept everyone" view, the execution is very different (I think) where metal allows hate to each other (in a way) as well as extremistic views to pretty much anything combined with a harsh be able to agree to disagree policy. Any opinion is allowed to be expressed and doing so is even encouraged, but acting with respect is also necessity as well as there being a time and place for everything. No one likes a guy who does nothing but trow their opinions in everyone's face. This is why things like NSBM is a thing despite most metalheads not being neo-nazis. People disagree but respect even their opinion as just that, their opinion. Actually trying to do neo-nazi actions instead of simply expressing their opinion in conversation (when relevant to the conversation) or in music will cause problems for these people. The same counts for any other extremist view. There are extremes to each ends of each spectrums tho, despite common deception that's it's only to such sides.

Trying to make everyone be nice and liking to each other also won't work. Since sincerity is most important and people are expected to be able to deal with people disagreeing with them, SJW and other people who just don't fit in are kept out naturally, but everyone able to follow social conduct is welcome, not just metalheads. Only real trouble makers get in problems, which aren't always solved as nicely. There was a guy who ripped a shirt of a (braless) girl which ended in firstly a guy giving his shirt to her, secondly people starting a moshpit on top of the guy "forgetting" how to mosh. Because hey, accidents happen in moshpits. They can't win of the crowed, so they keep out of the underground scene shouting elitism towards it. Overall the underground culture has more in common with bikers than goths. There is a sense of brotherhood and people look after each other real well. Bikers and metalheads here also go to each others' events regularly. I think half the bikers like metal and half the metalheads like bikes kek. We can also both enjoy good time together with beer, "good" music, tattoos etc. And both aren't very sympathetic to people who feel hurt and offended by everything.

Point is, I don't have this image of goth culture at all. Goth culture seems less harsh (which isn't necessarily bad, underground metal isn't for everyone nor should it be). So since I have little to no real life experience with it, it's nice to read these posts here.

Beside, altrough Scandinavia was the biggest place in black metal the "80 and is still big, nowadays Slavic and Germanic countries and are producing some great stuff too. The focuss is less on just Scandinavic countries nowadays. Altrough there have been some cross over between metal and goth culture, I think it's not saying that much about the cultures similarities nowadays.

Little add-on. The church burning thing which is most famously associated with black metal was a relative small group. Even back then most metalheads disagreed with those actions but with the press seeing huge stories and Mayhem and Burzum being big it was told in the news like all black metal fans loved these actions. Altrough satanism and devil worship where often used to express hatred towards abrahamic religions as well as being a great theatrical shockfactor, most people don't actually believe in such stuff. Although a few always exists (as Mayhem and Burzum showed). Most people nowadays either talk about such things as jokes, or are "TRVU CVLT" edgy teenagers who generally don't get along with the actual underground scene anyways and therefore don't represent it.

Guess metal, especially black metal, is also a spooky dark stuff wearing group as mentioned by >>10580509 . It's really diverse in itself nowadays. You've got your typical satanic black metal, NSBM, DSBM, Viking/Folk/Pagan black metal and similarly Germanic and Slavic inspired music, and much more. No topic, feeling or opinion is impossible really. So it's not really focussed on being spooky, but since it especially appreciate s breaking taboos and speaking in full honesty about then, and most "spooky" things have taboos, I'm guessing it fits.

Also, as said, were often confused for goths by outsiders anyways. That's what evil images and black clothes do to you.

2010s - pastel goths

If the goth scene embraces mall goths now, it's because the people were mall goths as kids. "Real" goths had a strong hatred for the subtype back when in its hayday.

The community is accepting now but it wasn't always.
A part of goth roots was always defense for their subculture and style if you look at the history. Same with grunge it seems.
