Considering the current new reports about gyaru and revival of old magazines, it's about time for a new thread.

The timing for a comeback fits anyways, after all it was born as fight against japan's beauty standards which are all about ~natural beauty~ again.

I'm not a gyaru and never was, my makeup skills are so bad I never could pull it off but I do admire gyaru. not sure if this should be in the stupid questions thread, but is gyaru so negatively perceived in Japan? I understand Japanese people dislike the excessive tanning and OTT makeup of gyaru from the 2000s because it goes so against Japanese beauty ideals, but the gyaru shown in that vid looks pretty normie in comparison. Is it because gyarus are associated with having some semblance of sex drive, so Japanese men hate them for not trying to look like 'soft uwu petite pure maidens ' or something?

I've been looking on-and-off for years and they all seem to appear when I'm not actively checking the market, or when I do find one it's a seller asking 30,000jpy for for a battered piece of garbage they've been using as a horse blanket for the past two decades. It was uncommon for Japanese youth to participate openly in sex unless they were delinquents. They don't have the same type of culture are here in the U.S.

Having sex their means you must be the otaku type, the bimbo type (gal), or a delinquent. At least, when gal got its roots it was the case. At the time, the magazine publishing sex tips for girls was considered unheard of. It's something that while commonplace in American culture, was uncommon for Japan's culture.
>>10563183
They were the women who fucked openly. Prior, if you weren't a delinquent, you weren't talking about it or reading magazines about it in public to 'save face;,
>>10563020
So, to answer your question. Yes. Gyaru stayed late at clubs, hung out in groups in town, and sat around laughing at sex tips in magazines while squatting on the streets in short skirts smoking cigarettes and drinking alcohol. To the U.S., none of this sounds bizarre. In Japan during the 90's and early 2000's, this was unheard of.

They were also the first to really dress 'sexy' in a way that could appeal to the mainstream crowd. Goths and punks have always been dressing skimpy, but they aren't everyone's cup of tea. Gals were the first girls dressing in a sexy way that appealed to a large majority of the mainstream in their day-to-day attire.

They weren't painting graffiti, picking fights, stealing, and endangering public safety. They were just having a good time & enjoying the more tangible parts of life.

>researching fashion trends unique to the late 90s/early 00s
>catch word of "ganguro"
>look it up
>completely enamored by how garish, flashy, feminine it is
>learn about kogyaru/banba/manba/yamanba/kurogyaru
>buy tacky "otaku" books that talk about the styles, study them
>watch youtube videos about it
>start looking for clothes that fit the style
>eventually rake out enough money, get a sizable "knockoff ganguro" wardrobe
>bleach my hair, start tanning outside
>start letting my nails grow out, paint them myself, add glitter and fake gems
>learn how to do the makeup
>be into this for about 2 years
>despite that, only wear the style publicly a few times

I wasn't around for the heyday of the styles, but recently I've been nostalgic for 2014-2016, when I was really into them. I started falling out of it when I had to move frequently due to an unsteady home situation (many of my belongings I either had to get rid of or were lost in the process of moving.) For a while I didn't have the money to buy much beside necessities, but now that I'm married, have moved to another country and am stable, I've been entertaining the idea of getting into it again... The only real thing holding me back (aside from not wanting to spend too much money) is that I used to live in the southern US and now live in the UK. Even back then, I wasn't brave enough to wear it publicly on any more than a few occasions (and with lighter makeup). I feel like it'd seem even more out of place in the UK than the US. Along with that, I'm not as keen on bleaching/using a lot of product on my hair now, or tanning.

Just reminiscing. I hope the styles really do make a comeback, particularly the more garish manba/yamanba ones, they were my favorite.

Since Discord mods read this thread sometimes, or their friends do...

Please keep an eye on that Mira girl. She's an /a/ tripfag with HPD who has been involved in all kinds of drama and selfposts on lolcow because she wants to be infamous online. She came into gyaru via the fetish, as far as I can tell still sees it like that, and is constantly pandering to coomers, it wouldn't at all surprise me if she shares pictures from the comm with her /a/ coomer friends.

She's not really done anything in the server (yet), but please at least be aware of this and quietly observe her to see if some fuckshit happens. I've enjoyed the discord becoming comfy and don't want that to change.

I used to know her a bit after I broke away from the waifu threads. I can at least say that she's distanced herself away from those types of people (as far as I can tell, basically every female poster eventually did aside from the ones that are really far gone.) The entire thing was depressing as fuck and should stand as a warning as to why to take sexual abuse seriously and to not let your severely mentally ill teenage daughter do drugs every day and entertain coomers. She seems to have actually tried to take her life back from that, but I do think a warning for her is deserved, while the coomer shit was mostly a drugged out teenager being used, she now has no hesitation telling people to tell themselves, cut themselves, showing how to self harm, sending gore and all similar things like that if she deems them a bad person.

tl;dr: fetish shit was all adult men literally cumming their pants over the being able to use and abuse mentally ill teenage drug addict and those probably shouldn't define her, but now she suicide baits people for liking certain anime or not being totally "woke".

I mean I get it. I've been following this thread but never joined because I'm not a gyaru and I figured that's what you're supposed to do. Not join communities you're not part of. No one wants a comm overrun with people not participating. Look what a mess that is in lolita comms.

I'm interested in reading about it tho. Especially from actual gyaru as I feel in-community conversation gives a lot of nuance and knowledge info sites simply can't cover or keep track of ever changing stuff, while on the same time don't know that much about it and likely will not wear it myself because as a whole it's just not my style, so I at best take some inspo from it. But I am truly interested in it as an outsider braiding there horizon. I'm kinda happy this got the cgl tread a bit more active so I can lurk without invading gyaru communities (which I won't do regardless), kinda hope it stays active now.

Now that I comment anyways, what would be other good places to lurk or just read that won't be full of misinformation, outdated stuff, etc? Cgl is one of the few completely open to lurk forums people can talk freely I can think about, as looking at things like lolita and goth even to noobs seemingly decent YouTube channels and such are actually shit. So I'm open for recommendations because other than this thread I don't really know where to start when it comes to gyaru, maybe I'm just missing very obvious places.

Manba/Banba, mountain hag, is one of the most extreme variations of gyaru. I hope that's simpler to understand. The attached photo is gyaru. It's just a substyle. The style is gyaru, and everything under it is a substyle.

Think of it like... species and sub-species, if you will. Little Herman's Ivy & Spearpoint Ivy are the same species, Hedera Helix, but we recognize them as different sub-species because of their entirely different appearance. Substyles of gyaru work the same. It's an umbrella.

I'm at a total loss for what to do with my hair. I don't want to get bangs again but I have a massive forehead. I can't wear a side part, which seems to be the most popular with modern Japanese gals, because of said billboard forehead. On top of that, most updos look like shit on me because I have extremely thin, fine hair and my scalp shows. I haven't gone to the salon since covid started and have been bleaching it at home, which probably doesn't help the thinness, but what can you do. At least it's soft and not fried, which is just about the only redeeming quality it has.
All that to say... I'm at a loss. The middle part with no bangs that I currently have is very current American zoomer style and doesn't suit gyaru. Also, I'm white with 2b curls. Any hair inspos?

have you tried a 3/4 part? you can create swoopy bang like looks this way. I'd also suggest a half up style with a ponyfall to add some volume. Pretty sure many Japanese (and general East-Asians) use a type of hair make-up to hide their scalp and make their hair look fuller at the roots. It can also be used to make your hairline a nicer shape/fuller. Have you tried that?

It's usually a bit different (or very different) from what mainstream girls are wearing. Rady is extremely popular with both older and younger Japanese gyaru, despite its high prices. It stems from fighting beauty standards & being pressured to use lightening products for one's skin. A lot of gals started tanning their skin, whether false tan, natural, or sunbathing, & it drew criticism because of a commonplace beauty standard ingrained in Japanese society.

That criticism turned into some gals going super, super dark in sort of a, "Fuck you," to those who were telling them they'd be more beautiful if they were pale.

I'll add to what I've said in >>10613036 that it's important to remember that many of Japanese descent will actually tan quite dark naturally even with the use of high SPF sunscreens. That's why so many products exist beyond standard sunscreen from arm shields & face covers to lightening products that sometimes contain dangerous lighteners on the Japanese market.

A tan is actually quite natural for many people in Japan, and that's just extra icing on the cake that led to an eventual trend of going super, super dark among some gals.

Anon, I'm not trying to rock the boat, but I think you're trying to pigeon hole other countries' interests, subcultures, and struggles into your own. If you aren't careful, to do so slowly shifts from what's originally ignorance to racism. I mean, honestly, trying to say gal is appropriating black people is really, really racist toward Japanese people. You should stop.

You aren't familiar with B-gyaru because... well, that was more a descriptive term for some gals who were, in fact, borrowing style inspiration from what was seen in hip-hop videos, but came well after people were already doing ganguro.

I hope that makes sense. Again, I'm not trying to be rude, but you're trying to make other countries subcultures, origins, and struggles your own in a manner that's... well, racist.

Similar look, but different origins. Most magazines in the 90's were exclusively for teenagers who were attending school still. In the 90's, most all makeup was frowned upon in many schools within Japan so many experimented with what they could 'get away with'. The early magazines show examples of this.

You're looking at two different things.

I deleted previous post as I re-read your post. Sorry, it was a bit hard to see exactly what you were saying. Yeah, I mean, it's a problem they keep translating it as 'black-face'. It actually stems from a slang term meaning 'extremely dark'. The slang term is, more or less, telling someone they're ugly because they're tan. I think that's why it gets translated to 'black face'. However, I'd point out the gals themselves chose to use the slang for themselves. I don't think 'black-face' is honestly the correct translation. It should read more like 'dark skin tone'.

B-gyaru is best described kind of like >>10610371 showing the use of carnivore-kei. Or a magazine referring to something as 'nautical', yes.

There was a page many, many years ago that showed B-gyaru with the B in English. The B came from 'beat box' actually. It was just a descriptive terms for some girls who were, in fact, borrowing from hip hop subculture in their dress. The name B-gyaru online came because people saw the article, and thought it represented it's own style. It... wasn't.

I think one of the models in that spread actually was Brazilian-Japanese, in fact. There's actually a pretty high proportion of people with partial Brazilian descent compared to a lot of other ethnicities over there.

>> No.10613656

>>10613639
I think you misinterpreted my comment.

I never said gals was actual blackface or appropriating black culture, just that b gal specifically was inspired by hip hop and black culture aesthetics (which you agree with). Some people online think dressing in that way at all combined with a tan is blackfishing which I disagree with. I literally said I think b gal is respectful and appreciative of black culture (as a black person, this is my opinion; I don't think it does any harm or that anyone means any harm for Japanese girls to have cute hip hop or streetwear looks, it is innocent and perfectly fine), I never accused them of appropriation.

I'm not trying to make any struggle my own and nothing I said was racist. I was just saying people who mistake ganguro for racism and blackface are probably partly confused because of people promoting the translation of ganguro as "blackface".

Idk if I worded it in a way that was difficult for you to interpret or anything but I literally never said anything you are claiming I said. If anyone needs to stop it is you to reread what I said in my last post and this one, cause I never expressed anything negative of the style as a whole or the substyles, just mentioned why normies or people unfamiliar are probably quick to misinterpret it.

Emilie who used to run the western IG quit her job at Liz Lisa and the western IG hasn't been updating since. I'm just guessing it was A) a part of her job, and B) they don't have anyone with good enough english to run it.
Either way the website is still there so I think they feel they've reached the international market enough.

brands aren't necessarily gal or not. there were styles and brands that were popular with gals but they become associated with gal, not the other way around. brands like jd, mars dia and even yumetenbo are still around because they established themselves as fashion stores that evolve and change unlike many defunct brands that only made one style that's out of fashion now. you can still wear those styles, but they're not popular anymore.

kogyaru is fine, don't let a few creeps ruin it. it's great as a casual outfit or at cons. it just happens to be popular now with idiots due to teens seeing them in anime.
