especially about looking cheap. a lot of noobs tend to mistake the usage of different materials for the allowance of cheap materials. i especially notice this in things that have lace, like blouses and headdresses. there are a lot of blouses and headdresses (maxipad style especially) that look the part, but are cheaply made cosplay items. it's especially easy to buy cosplay crap since most anime lolita is old school, or ita monsters. i've seen nice coords ruined by one bad item time and time again.

I think there's a noticable difference between a lot of the thick, even toned white cotton hosiery in old school looks compared to cheap blue-white hose available now. It’s not anyone's fault, they're just a bit harder to come by now. (And the cheap blue-white ones look great in some shiro and ero coords like the ones the girl with the poodle apron is wearing.)
Either way they photograph differently and sometimes can look unintentionally very cheap/hookerish and bad if not styled carefully.

In FRUiTS the ages of girls in full brand are often 12-16. Most adolescents are given allowances and also get money for doing well in school. Oftentimes being allowed to dress alternatively is conditional on their grades.
The ones who go on to wear lolita as adults are more often tattooed, facial pierced punks who work in bars, alternative clothing stores, or models for harajuku fashion brands as a low paying career much to their parents disappointment.
Not all lolitas "graduate" but it is simply the most common occurrence to either wear otome brands/pink house as they age, or quit lolita entirely.
