Exactly. Don't understand why people don't see this. When you look at a large majority of these ladies' cosplays from back then, the construction is simple stuff and not good, just characters that had outfits that were sexy (and their more well done cosplays were done with help, like by their mom/significant other/etc....just like a lot of thots now.) It was only because they showed a lot of skin and didn't look like a mutant that they became popular cosplayers.

thots or not, there was still a greater emphasis on craftsmanship, love of the character, and showing them at actual cons. As a cosplayer, you would get shit on if you cosplayed something you weren't a legit fan of.

Nowadays, nobody cares. A "great cosplay" constitute nothing more than a nice-looking selfie in a wig that you upload to instagram. Your average cosplayer will never even cosplay outside their house.

>> No.10527054

>>10527049
It depends on the circles you hang out in. Pretty much all of my cosplay friends make at least 70% of their cosplays and I pretty much exclusively follow craftsmanship cosplayers. Once you find the craftsmanship circles you tend to get recommended more content relevant to your interests on places like Instagram for instance.

There are still a ton of people who care about the characters and the craftsmanship, for the most part the only people who really don’t care for that stuff are the dipshit coomers looking for the next slab of meat to jack off to. Don’t give up hope quite yet, anon.

TBF one thing I'm noticing is all the low effort thots were starting to leave Cosplay for Only Fans before Wu Flu. I'm not saying it's going back to 2010 levels but the lazy thots who just wore bikinis are realising they can just post some lewds on twitter and reddit and the simps will come without having to actually interact with them IRL. I'd prefer this desu. It might hopefully mean less gross middle age togs who harass underage girls when Cons come back.

It's so easy to just buy a FoTM cosplay now, and I get it; if you love naruto you can buy a naruto cosplay and dick around for a weekend or two, but I see so many career "cosplayers" that only wear bought cosplays. That's not cosplay; that's being a crappy "model".

Male gull from 2010-era here (sea hawk?) I never post here anymore, and rarely visit, but here’s a story about the old days to answer your question.

Back in 2010, anyone that was not in peak physical shape, or whom did not also possess top-tier cosplay ability, was viciously shamed of the board. This behavior may sound somewhat ridiculous/ fanatical by today’s standards, but consider the times: The board was beset by an absolute ONSLAUGHT of shitty Homestuck trolls, fat Haruhis, Neo-Nigiris, and Hot Topic ita girls. It was like the perfect storm. As a result, almost every serious cosplayer inevitably became a tripfag, and all of the major tripfags would regularly have laggy-ass video calls and get to know each other. It was like a very exclusive, very elite club of /fit/izens, yet very few were openly snobbish. Most importantly, everyone was held accountable for everything they ever posted. It even got to the point where anonymous shit posters were regularly accused of being tripfags in disguise, either posting their own pictures under anonymous for clout, or talking shit on other trips. That’s just how many trips there were— almost everybody was one, and the weak ones were weeded out. But of course, everybody hates tripfags, and it was only natural that there would be some kind of push back to this level of elitism.

I stopped visiting the board around 2013-14 or so, so I can’t tell you what happened here during the time I was gone, but I can’t tell you what happened in real life. People became allergic to the concepts of benevolent gatekeeping and taking your hobbies seriously. Shaming others, for any reason, became socially taboo as a result of the body positivity and sex positive feminist movements. As a result of that, cosplay became an increasingly obvious way for girls to market themselves to guys, while the bar for quality was simultaneously lowered. Everyone back then knew this would happened and warned against it.

Nobody listened.

This is mostly miss remembered past. The reality is that "emphasis on craftsmanship" wasn't some culture of excellence that was meant to lift all boats, it as a an anxiety we all cultivated to not be made fun of (irl or online). Once more normies got into cosplay and didn't care about that, the spell was broken and people started complaining about the "slide in quality".

yeah, definitely this. If anything, the emphasis on craftsmanship is greater than ever before as new materials and methods are constantly developed. Hell, the fact that craft stores will have cosplay sections now is evidence to how popular making cosplays has come. what reddit coomers flock to isn't indicative of the makeup of the cosplay community. The thing that has changed in cosplay is commodification. Unfortunately material analysis works in this case too. When cosplay was this weird niche hobby there was very little to profit off of it. Pretty much it was just social capital among the in-group. Thanks to internet, and I'd argue with people feeling more alienated, cosplay has grown in visibility and has grown as this escapists activity. This wider knowledge of and participation in cosplay allowed for more commodification. Starting off with socal capital and eventually when it got big enough, actual capital (outside of the cosplay community).

As western economies have reduced the available jobs to customer support, food runner or internet entrepreneur going that next step and farming coomer bux by doing the thing you're already doing makes a degree of sense. Plus cosplays escapists nature allows people to build this division in their head.

Honestly the e-girls have it right if you want to make money off cosplay. You can either do a handful of commissions a year or make photo shoots and posts every other day. Both are labor. One has more overhead than the other.

Most male cosplayers are deathly afraid of sewing machines, make up or anything used to style a wig.

Most male "crafters" focus on foam work, which often is middling, and pawning all the other work off on their girlfriends or just buying or just not having key details bc they didn't know how to add it.

This is all assume they aren't as the other anon said not someone who just bought their whole outfit which they ate regularly cheap on bc it's for "just a weekend".

>>10530908
I don't know how this debunks any of what I've said. Nigri has been around for a decade now and younger cosplayers that make their own cosplays have always been a minority. Usually their parents would make their cosplay or they'd pull together a shitty closet cosplay. Even as for the kids that do make their own cosplays, craftsmanship is never the focus; they tend to be very utilitarian in making things. Trying to get better is a rare quality, most people were just content with being recognized as a character.

I would agree, but that don't stop them from doing cosplay.

I discussed with someone made a steampunk worksuit with lots of craps, like a gazmask and a air cooler because it was unbearable to wear.
40kg of metal.
The guy had a redcollar metal working job and had plan for a alluminium/titane mechanised suit.

I have a functionnal armor that would be fit for behurt but also happen to cosplay a certain character from a certain game. a good part custom made and bought, cuz I can't work complex shape in hardened steel.
I admit I would gladly work on leather, plastic or metal rather than sewing as I only have big needles and my hands, and I find make-up hard and costly.
But heh, fortunately that is needed for all cosplays.

But most big armor/monster/gundam cosplays seem to be male. and there is always a least a good batman/iron man suit in every fucking convention.

Those cosplay could be done by girls, nobody would notice or care who is under the big suit. but because of that, such project would be incompatible with E-thot aim.
You would need skills to make them, too. Those aren't really sold in mass in chinese cosplay factory.

But, maybe because metal working hobby and jobs are associed with male and the more usual sewing/makeup is associed with female, it's more than often male inside.

Excuse for what ? Wanting to make something more original ?

1- Well, that pict is just a foam cosplay. Lot of skill involved, sure, but that don't enter into the things I have just described. complete big ass suit, gundam and the like, metal armor set. And also : if that would be true, and I believe there is some girls doings that, in what way the point I made would be changed ?
2- As long as it's not pointy or a weapon, security guard don't give a shit about metal. Else most iron men, couldn't get in. It's really not new, cf : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qnx1WiMETG0
3- pict related.

Thats one of the reason why I prefer thermoplastic/metal. I can fool arround just fine (as long as endurance permit it), and if someone run into me, well i will be more sorry for them than for my armor.
Gundam have such huge frame that they are either made very fragile or unable to move.
Although there is smaller gundam that must be easier to wear, and make.

It just means that they're getting turned into the same old dumbed-down color-by-numbers shit as everything else that's popular with normalfags, and now the new money's too good for the industries to ever go back to how they were!

From now on, no more wishes for things to get bigger. Niche is good, small fanbase is a necessary side-effect. Gatekeeping is good too, there's a reason it naturally tends to happen in any group that takes itself seriously at all.

There were still creeps even, but the majority of people there were autistically interested in anime and games rather than anything else. I don't even remember seeing much skin surprisingly (doesn't bother me, but I think it says a lot because it's not like it wasn't allowed). Anyway, the con doesn't have to be puritan or asexuals only, kek. But I personally would enjoy an autistic chuuni audience no matter the age, 15+ I'd say with plenty adult programming just no normalfaggotry. Plenty of opportunities to meet people, larp, play games, and create culture. And like I said, the idea is for everyone to have a con that fits their tastes with less of the people they dislike. You can have your adults only party con too, just separate. And people could attend more than one con for different experiences, you don't have to pick one and be stuck with it.

It's always been this way, you're just incapable of removing your rose-tinted glasses.

Hot girls are gonna be hot no matter what, and will be models if they want. Hot girls who do cosplay modeling do it because - horror of horrors - they like the shit they cosplay as. Go cry into your body pillow that your hobby has hot people in it who won't fuck you.

I had this discussion with someone. Someone posted a pic in a cosplay group wich was just a girl in normie clothes with massive photoshop to make her look like the character. She even photoshopped the color of hair instead of using a wig.
I commented that while the pic might be cute, it was definitely not cosplay. Some guy felt the need to whiteknight her and claim that it was.....
I might be old but did the meaning of the word cosplay change over time?

since COVD19 I honestly realize how much I love cosplaying at cons> IG photos...I did a complete 180 now surprisingly.
Its so much more fun in person with other fellow nerds then just getting high from likes from strangers online. I'm old school though I guess. I dunno, I don't need likes to validate my cosplays anymore honestly....I just miss the fun in it

>normies
You are the normies. If you called them the original term, you would have not outed yourself. Normalfag is the correct term, just for future reference. What you are using is the Reddit/PC accepted newfag term.

On that note, those you call basic are probably more similar to you than you think. You are not special. Nobody is. It seems as though you are just upset by their success and ponder how to obtain it without "selling out", but at the end of the day, you now that you do not have anything of worth to "sell".

This guy gets it. We all want to be accepted. We all want our levels of community to be on point. However, in doing so, this niche thing we helped foster becomes an entirely different beast and although it seems like a net positive, in brings in more attention whore and loud minority-minded individuals than we feel comfortable associating with.

Gatekeeping is always seen as a shitty thing, yet those that were around at the start are often the ones who are pro-gatekeeping. Why is that?

Let's be real, sweetie. If you have done any actual modeling in your life, like me, you know how competitive that shit really gets.

I am not saying models who cosplay for shoots are not into anime or whatever they cosplay. I am just saying, at least from my own experience, that is helps me form a more inclusive audience. Think about it, anyone can do a beach shoot for easy attention/money, but modeling as Super Sonico during a beach shoot, well, now I just expanded my audience, because someone on Redditt shared that pic on their related sub-reddit.

I am not trying to say I am the next Belle Delphine, but think for a moment... would she have ever gotten anywhere had she not gone for the anime/gamer audience? (Not even talking cosplay-specific, but her appeal to said crowds)

one can only hope....I remember in 2019 seeing a "famous IG" girl cosplaying who was basic AF....sitting all alone taking selfies. Interacted with no one at the con and looked so stuck up. I was like wow....the internet scene is completely different for "good cosplays" now. She just looked like a young cosplayer who put in no effort and did not care at all about the con. I don't even think she bought a badge, as she was always just sitting outside alone

LMAO. Yeh, he's a real piece of shit desu. Though, I am jealous, The dude appears to either have a sugar daddy, an inheritance from mummy and daddy or works a damn good job because the mf goes to (Or did before Covid) like 25 cons or more a year, is constantly buying new cosplay and apparently own his own house, etc.... I have him on my FB friends just to watch the train wreck that he sometimes post and it's funny.

In regards to OPs post... Are you sure y'all it isn't just the fact alot of us are well into are 30s (and 40s now?) and have turned into the oldheads we dealt with when we got into the scene? Most Gundam, Ironman, or any other big armor cosplays are made of foam, cardboard (or similar material), and plastic. Only Ren Faire larpers care or do the full metal armor shit with maybe less than 5% of regular cosplayers joining in.

I've seen full Fallout power armor suits made of eva foam & and foam core, I have a friend who did an Alphonse suit completely out of formed plastic that looks near identical to full plate, hell I even made a wooden sword for Pyramid Head look like a giant rusted blade from wood.

Just cuz your skills arent as useful to the majority doesnt mean you are somehow better.

Are you a moron? Normies dates back to the early 2000s or earlier - any older fans are going to be using it. "-fag" suffixes is exclusively 4chan speak. I can't decide if you're just a young fan or if you don't interact with cosplayers outside of cgl.

1990's: Look at me, I made a costume!
2000's: Look at me, I spent a lot of time on this costume!
2010's: Look at me, I used crazy techniques to accurately replicate a stupidly complicated costume that was never intended to be able to actually be worn!
2020's: Look at me, I'm cute!

Cosplay is about attention- it always has been, it always will be. That's not a bad thing.

Everyone has a different reason for wanting that attention- dressing like Kirito is a great way to meet other SAO fans (are there actually SAO fans? I assume so...) Creating a full suit of battle armor is a great way to get compliments on your skill as a sculptor. Posting a highly photoshopped picture of yourself in a costume is a way to get people to say "Wow, you're so cute!"

How you cosplay is directly related to why you cosplay- if you want people to marvel at your sewing skills you won't buy a cheap school uniform off aliexpress. Everyone may have a different reason for cosplaying, but it's all cosplay and none of them are "ruining" cosplay for other people.

i agree and disagree. wanting attention is totally fine, but you failed to add "look at me, i want money!", which has been the problem. turning cosplay into glorified porn with a wig brings the wrong kinds of people to cons which does in fact ruin them.

People treating cosplayers as objects is a real problem. Is it caused by people posting lurid pics of themselves in costume online for money? No, but I can see how that might make the problem worse. If the cosplayers people see most are showing skin for money, that's how people will think of most cosplayers.

Still, I don't know that online cosplayers are a big draw for conventions- as anime has exploded in popularity the convention scene has grown by leaps and bounds. Since the Pokemon boom of the early 2000s (dating myself) there have always been a large number of people at conventions from "outside" the community (however you define that community).

I'm also not sure how you define "gross", but I've seen a lot what I'd consider inappropriate behavior over the years. It's real, it's a problem, but I don't think we can lay it entirely at the feet of "Cosplay for Ca$h."

Gross horny men have always existed but they did not dictate the direction cosplay went in. Also back then this was limited to gross horny nerds. Normies didn't give a shit about cosplay or knew what it was. Now people cosplay as thirst traps because there's an entire industry centered around taking sad men's cash and a good portion of that is men who don't attend cons. The cosplay audience pool is many times larger now than it was ten years ago.
