I'm trying to do a cheap cosplay of balsac from gwar but so far I only figured out how to do the two jaws and how to get them into shape. i dont know how to set ir up so it stays on my head. Some people have a hat on but i have long hair and wanted to use it for the cosplay, and I also want it to be at a wide enough angle so it looks like the old balsac. What's a good method of mounting a big mask like this?

Don't limit yourself by looking only for guides on your specific character. Look for resources for any type of foam amor build, masks, LEDS, and etc. KamuiCosplay, PunishedProps, and Odin's Workshop are your best friends now. They also sell how-to books and patterns (either basic or character specific). I highly recommend buying atleast a basic pattern if you don't know where to begin.

I use ink/stitch, which is a free extension for Inkscape (also free). It's definitely not gonna give you all the features of a proper digitizing software, you can't just pop a picture in as if it'll be good to go, and it's good to have some prior knowledge of programs like adobe illustrator or inkscape itself, but after watching tutorial videos for it on youtube it's easy enough to use assuming you dont need to do anything too complicated with it.

ntayrt, but hoods are super easy to sew. It's just one big curved seam. You could pick a fabric that you like and get heat transfer stretch vinyl to attach it. Just make sure it's breathable. Probably a cotton?

Can you use a white pillow cover with a tie around the neck? Just buy a "throw pillow cover" so that it's smaller and fits your head better. Otherwise do some hand sewing, it's really not that bad for something that small if you don't have a machine or experience. I guess you could also comission it for pretty cheap too

Your best bet to is install a godet (a triangular panel) in the skirt area of the dress at both side seams up to the waist to increase the fullness. If you can get the fall right it shouldn’t be too noticeable or take away from the dress appearance.

I think it worked a bit? it gave me volume on the sides and started to hang with more pleats but the very front and back are still very "flat" if that makes sense so it looks strange still. i will buy a petticoat with more volume at the bottom and see if that will work with the godets in.
i think my problem is actually the pink fabric on the bottom is appliqued on with the iron on backing before i top stitched it , so it is significantly stiffer than the blue fabric.

iron on transfer vinyl if you have access and prowess with a cricut or a iron on printer transfer paper if otherwise. I'm not sure how well printer transfer paper takes with sewing, but in the case of viynl, it can really extend the longevity of the transfer beyond one good wash.

What's the best way to go about adding a stripe to a pleated skirt? I know I have to add it after hemming and before pleating, but should I
A) cut the section I want a different color away from the skirt and replace it (with seam allowance) with the second color I want
or
B) top stitch the 2nd color on top of the first fabric. And if B, do I narrow hem the top and bottom of the stripe or fold it like bias tape. Or instead of the inside flaps meeting in the middle do I just fold it in like a half inch??

If it's a narrower stripe (like under 2 inches, especially if your skirt is not a curved edge), topstitching is the better method. I'm not sure what you're trying to describe about thinning the hem though.

Oh in that case my advice is the same, topstitch down the bias tape if it's a narrower stripe. You can either fold and hide the ends in a skirt seam or tuck them under the tape/ribbon before stitching. I custom make my own bias tape for stripes in colors not available as ribbon or in very specific widths.

Sorry, I didn't explain myself very well did I? Okay, so I have some pink fabric that I am using for other portions of my costume. I want everything to match, so I also figured I'd use it for the stripe on the skirt. However, there is going to be raw edges since it's not finished like a ribbon. Do I try making a narrow hem and then topstitching over that seam line or press and fold it as if it were 1 inch long bias tape (you know how like bias tape has those two edges folded inward and meeting in the middle of the wrong side). Any recommendations for wig companies (with a variety of colors, not lace front) that can actually be heavily styled, re-parted, and cut without any strange cowlicks?
This wig isn't going to be intended for cosplay, rather quite frequent wear for visual kei fashion purposes, but jfashion wigs tend to be too low quality for intense styling. I have tried working with Arda but I honestly think their wigs are horrendous for anything other than cartoony cosplay. All the shitty cheap cosplay wigs I bought in the past also don't work well or have bald patches- yet the fashion wigs I've gotten from places like Dream Holic aren't good for heavy styling at all because of their thinness and are best just lightly trimmed. Would prefer a wig that I can totally chop up, flatten, hair-spray / gel to shit, etc.
Any recommendations for decent stylable wigs that AREN'T from Arda would be very helpful! I know I can just Google it, but I don't know if any of the companies are actually good or if the reviews are all fake.. would rather hear from other people's recommendations.

Yeah sergers prices start a bit higher than sewing machines do, but one in the $250 range should be able to do what you need to do. I have the brother 1034D and it does everything I need it to do, but I'm sure there are nicer ones if you want to spend more. Then if you need to only do a little bit of sewing you could pick up a cheaper machine later down the line. Just make sure you get one that has zigzag stitches if you're gonna be doing lingerie

Does anyone have tips for getting creases out of pleather? Would putting a heavy book on top for a little while take care of it? Or maybe low heat ironing?

Not that you shouldn't do this project, but just be aware that working with stretch fabrics is not a beginner project. It's like level 2-3 beginner at best. I would suggest practicing with cheap tights or other stretch fabrics before trying your project. Also, you will need extra tools like a ballpoint or stretch machine needle, tissue paper or temporary stabilizer, possibly a walking foot, etc.

From one beginner to the next, the features that I have found most helpful are: an automatic needle threader, built in thread cutter, built in light, and a back stitch and tie-off button (I don't know the exact name of it, but I've seen it on Brother machines and it backstitches a few strokes and cuts the thread all in one press which is fucking dope because I always forget to backstitch).

I'd suggest picking up 1 "all you need to know" guide books and then using Youtube to cover the rest. I have Reader's Digest Guide to Sewing, but any similar book will do. Professor Pincushion and Evelyn Wood are my go to's on Youtube.

If by portable you mean the handheld ones or "mini" machines then absolutely not. You might as well throw your money away. If you're talking regular machines which aren't built into a table then yeah, either is fine. "Fixed" built-in table machines are best for people who are dedicated sewists and forsee never needing to move their machine from the table and would benefit from having more surface area. However, they're equally good options. I would recommend a standard not-built into a table machine.

All machines need some level of care, but some more than others. Especially vintage machines which are more oil driven. Regular maintenance doesn't have to mean taking it to the shop, but rather cleaning out the fluff after every project or every few months. Also regularly switching out the needles.

The biggest issue isn't that they'll unravel but unfinished stretchy fabric will roll up on itself. You can finish it off with a spot of lace or a simple hem with a zigzag stitch. Again like I said, remember that lingerie is stretchy and delicate and will require different sewing methods than non-stretch fabrics. Slow and steady wins the race here.

I hope this information doesn't come off as too overwhelming to you. Above all, the best thing you can do it practice. Fuck up a lot and learn from it. That's what we all have done and you will do. Don't let repeated mistakes demotivate you. Sewing is like 40% cutting and pinning, 10% at the machine, and 50% unpicking your mistakes.

Still, I learn fast and I have a lot of room for mistakes as I destroy my way up the legs of old stockings/old socks to get a feel for how it all falls together. I took on some out of my league projects myself when I first started haha. Also yes, a walking foot can be purchased from the manufacturer but as this board seems to agree, they're way over priced and the same quality as third party. Your best bet is to find a highly-rated package of them on Amazon for cheap. You'll find a use for the other feet eventually. Not at all. People wear muscle suits, silicone chests, padding, makeup contouring, and etc. You have to remember it's a costume, not a lookalike contest. It's about the fun you have translating (NOT 1:1 copying) fiction into reality.

That being said, many people find it fun to work and train their hardest to achieve as fit of body as their character and that's totally fine too. It's all within what you define as fun, but no one is going to shun or look down on you for not having a fictional body. Not sure how you can shrink leather, but you can cut a V into the back of the calf and replace it with wide black elastic. It won't be very noticeable and it should make them tighter to your thigh. If you're worried about it being visible in 2booty shots, then maybe make the incision on the inner thigh instead. You can check out commercial boots for reference, this technique is pretty common

Let it out until it stops puckering then re-pin (adjust) the waist in so that it lays flat. The puckering means there's tension from either waist being too small or fabric pieces incorrect in size to fit properly. You can also add support like interfacing or boning if it's the fabric being too flimsy to stand on its own.

The problem was that I forgot to add enough seam allowance to the center back seam for the invisible zipper so it was too tight to fit all the way down my hips causing the puckering. You’re probably gonna have to browse actual Taobao stores. Cosplay shops’ international sites only carry what their best selling items are, which lean disproportionately female. I've neved done any 3D pritned cosplays, but if you're going to use a PLA printer (which is the most common one) a quick google search on "PLA glue" should give you what you are looking for.

Contact cement is usually fine with most things but it can dissolve some plastics so better check before hand.

Buying a pair of overalls smaller than you are might restrict your movement. These do look very body contouring so you might want to look for some that are made out of a stretch fabric or at least have some stretch. You'll need to either luck out and find fabric that has the gradient or dye it yourself with steady hands.

It also depends on what fabric you plan on using, like basic cotton would be the easiest to gradient dye but it's probably not the best/most accurate fabric you'd want to use for the costume. When I look at Gawr Gura's hoodie, I think of it as extremely comfy fleece or minky, but I've found that most fleece/minky you can buy in stores has been chemically treated to resist all dyes no matter how hot or concentrated you make the soup.

So may I suggest if you have the budget for it, and want to go for comfy, buy custom printed fabric with the exact gradient.

Also please don't use fabric paint or spray paint. It'll make the fabric crunchy and looks horrid up-close unless you want a grungy look. Fabric paint really is only meant to look good for small areas of work.

How heavy do you want the cape? Cotton sateen will wrinkle easily and get heavy. Stretch vinyl will hang funny because of the stretch and it's even heavier than cotton. You're probably better off with some wrinkle-resistant fabric for the shell and lining it with like a (wet-look) thin suede.

How do I hide my ears for cosplays where the character does NOT show a pair of human ears? Do people tape ears down or do something to the wig to ensure that the ears are covered all the time? I know there's Photoshop but that's not possible in real life hall photos.

Usually the problem is the other way around, that I have to flatten out the wig around the ears to make sure they show naturally.

That being said, if it's that important to you:

You would probably only be able to wear this for pictures. Otherwise you'd have to cut some holes for eyes and that'd look strange and cheap.

Sounds fine, just know that it's going to be toasty as hell around your head. You're gonna sweat a lot unless you try to make it like a mascot / furry head with a fan and eye/ear holes covered with mesh. Also just a heads up, you should make the fabric like a pillow cover (with a zipper), don't just glue the fabric directly to the foam or it'll probably look bad.

KamuiCosplay just did a walk through of her workshop. She used some good storage solutions. CowbuttCrunchies also showed off her previous workshop with storage for her detailed wigs which can't be bagged. I'd say a combo of those and pinterest board solutions should give you some good inspiration.

The way I like to think of it is by thinking of your needs. You're going to be working in this room so imagine what your day to day routine is going to look like:

How do I sew together two elastics of quite different length and strength? If I pin them together with needles the strong one makes the weak one pucker like crazy and it all gets twirled on to itself the moment I let go of it.

Hm, it's kind of hard to help when I have no idea of what you're working on or trying to make but I do know that elastics need to stretch at the same length in order to work well. So if the weaker elastic is puckering, it means that they're not stretching at the same distance. You'll probably need to stretch the weak elastic while sewing so that it's roughly the same amount of stretch as the strong elastic similarly to how you would do it if you were sewing the elastic to a fabric. There's a pinning method where you put a pin in the middle, two at the quarters, and two at the ends of both garments. Then you'll know how much you need to pull the weak elastic so that the pins match.

I'm making stockings, and at the thigh the thin elastic fabric is hardly wider than a fist. My choice of elastic band can obviously be improved, as I just got the first thing that said "elastic", and it's way too strong. As measured on me, it's roughly twice as long as the circumference of the thin fabric. Pinning them is a big problem because the thing doesn't maintain a round shape and is therefore difficult to sew. Maybe I could use shorter pins so it's easier to unravel the mess as I sew. I regularly use the method of pinning at the middle, quarters, etc until I am satisfied and begin sewing, but with such a difference in strengh I can reduce the difference, or the length, or maybe paint the half/quarter/etc points with a white marker and try to sew stretching the weaker fiber.

Don't sew it around 360. Just sew at quarter points, enough to keep it in place, and it will stay up once you're wearing the item because it'll be fully stretched out then. This is what I've done for elastic bands on knee-high and thigh-high socks.

There is no too tall or short or general height in cosplay. It's just for fun. No one is going to point and laugh before you're x centimeters off from canon height.

Not saying that you are, but, newbies tend to have this perception that they HAVE to look 100% like a character naturally before they even attempt a cosplay. That's like the antithesis to cosplay. You're supposed to find a character you love and pour that love into transforming yourself into them. The transformation aspect is entirely the point of cosplay.

Now that being said, groups can definitely be catty. Same with people online (who more likely than not don't even cosplay themselves btw). And if someone is honestly going to look down on you for something out of your control like your height, then you don't want to be in their group or have them looking at your photos anyway.

I need more an opinion than practical help. When cons reopen, hopefully sometime before the next decade starts, my first cosplay I'm planning is going to be the Prowler from Into the Spider-verse. So in your first post, you were asking about elastics and their different strengths, but that's not the source of this issue you're having. The reason that the rolling and puckering is happening is because of the type of fabric you're using. That mesh/tights/pantyhose fabric is woven with elastic fibers that allow it to stretch. So naturally it's gonna wanna roll up on itself unless you do something to stop that. Take a look at store bought panty hose. You'll notice that they have a lace band and typically a silicone "sticky rubber" band. That's because the fabric needs to be encapsulated into a seam or inside the band in order to stop rolling. So to fix this problem, use >>10522298 anon's advice and find some lingerie elastic or stretch lace. Also serge/zig zag stitch the edge of your raw seam to encourage it to stay put before attaching it to the lace or elastic. Take a close look at the toe cap seam if you need a clear picture.

I would try heatsetting it. I've used Speedball paint before to do stencils, and it's mandatory to heat it up with an iron afterwards to "lock it in". Before you do that, the paint washes out. I bet it's the same with RIT dye.

Well your first problem is that you're trying to paint a lighter color on top of a darker color. You'll need a white primer layer underneath the yellow for it to show up on red fabric. Honestly, I would forgo the yellow paint and either do a strip of htv or sew a yellow strip or panel in the middle instead since getting yellow to show up on that would require several layers of primer and paint, which can result in the paint cracking or the fabric becoming really stiff.

The cotton is absorbing the paint and the red is darker than the yellow. You'd basically have to put in so much paint that it saturates the fabric to make the yellow start showing, at which point it's a chunk mess. Like others have said, to make the yellow show up, you'd have to lay down white primer that seals the fabric from absorbing the paint first before the yellow paint (which will also be thick and gross and crack), or sew/iron on a yellow panel instead.

Yes, they're called Shapewear. Spanx is a particularly popular brand is often used as the shorthand name for it ("I'm looking for Spanx") the same way we say Kleenex instead of tissue sometimes. Ok I tried this (used Rit Color Stay). I first did my blood splatter pattern, let it sit for an hour, then I liberally sprayed the fabric with the colorstay, and while it did maintain the color, all the blood drops bled out (no pun intended) and made everything that was supposed to remain white into a shade of pink.

Sounds like your base fabric has been chemically treated during manufacturing to make it stain- and dye-resistant. In this case, no amount of home dyeing is going to give you a solid result (I've had white basic fleece from JoAnn that would come out pure white as soon as I wash it after a red dye bath). The only way to force the color to stay by home methods is like what the other anon said, you iron the colored/dyed part and it "sets" it. It might come out a little crunchy and I wouldn't dare getting the part wet after that.

Not cosplay, but if someone wants to help: Is there very strong, flexible, fabric glue? I need to repair velcro (the loop part is worn out and it doesn't engage the hooks anymore), but I cannot just sew a new strip onto the old. This is a multi-layer garment where the stitches for the present strip are inaccessible. Sewing it on anyway, punching through everything, the stitches will show on the outer side and look bad.

If I go with glue, maybe shave the loops away prior to sticking a new strip on will make things less messy.

I do blood and dirt weathering on occasion, usually MUCH more dramatic for horror characters (pic related) but the same principle applies. Dry-brushing (getting nearly all the paint off a brush, lightly brushing/dabbing onto the fabric, using a damp paper towel to rub excess off) does good work. I also like using steel wool or high-grit sandpaper to encourage slight fraying.
If you want to be fancy you can use fuller's earth or model moss, but for light beginner work you can honestly get away with cheap acrylic paint. Browns and umbers for dirt, or just darker/desaturated shades of the fabric. Think about parts that would naturally get dirty or worn - raised segments, parts overlapping, dangling strands, etc and go there.

Another easy way to weather fabric is to throw it in the washer/dryer a few times. Just don't use settings that will shrink or discolor it!

was told to move here after i madew a thread about a question (sorry btw im new to this board) but i want to know if theres any resources / help on making Griffiths armor from berserk im making it out of EVA foam and i just need the stencils/ template for cutting the pieces out, so if someone can help with resources on making the template or an actual template it would be a lifesaver.

Finding specific pattern templates for your character can be tricky. You could definitely find the chest plate for free/cheap from pattern makers like PunishedProps, but the wings and decorative stuff might need to be self-drafted. Check out Etsy though, you might get lucky.

If it’s not too late, you can scrape the messed up paint off and use a tide pen or shout wipe to get rid of the rest of it.

Whatever you wear underneath will need to be seamless and not bulky. I'd suggest trying on the costume first to figure out what kind of coverage you need if any. I'm not sure whether you're making or buying your costume, but if so invest in high quality fabric and you won't need a linning. It'll likely be way too hot to have a lining anyway.

Black on white would require fewer layers of paint. White on black might have less risk of getting dirty. In your example the black stripes are thinner than the white stripes, so I would do black on white.
