Cons like that who have been drawing over 20k for years will have the convention centers and hotels working out deals to keep them running. Most are going to be small, D-list cons put together by pissed off vendors. The university-based conventions are probably the safest.

I actually question whether or not the big guys will be ok. They might fail, or downsize to a disappointing degree. The thing is, the bigger the con the higher the sunk costs, and depending on the timing of when they came along relative to the virus, and how financially savvy they were, they may have found themselves in MASSIVE debt. It also depends on how much they put away and invested in a decent insurance policy/how much the payouts will cover. Some leaner conventions might have much less in expenses. I worked with two mid-size cons (think 5-10k) that operates on an essentially debt free budgeting policy. Those cons will be fine no matter their size because they don’t have impending debts to sink them.

I do agree that some cons needed to die a long time ago. There’s a couple of conventions that have been known for some time to just be creep feats populated by an awful lot of non-fan frat boys looking for cheap/free booze and parties.

As the one semi-conventionally attractive male at 90% of the events I've gone to, there have been so many cases where if I ever did to a female attendee some of the things they do to me I'd be instantly booted. ACen 2021 probably isn't going to happen. Bike the Drive was supposed to be that same weekend in Chicago but recently had a date change. That's a 20,000+ person outdoor event that's now tentatively been pushed back to Fall 2021.
I don't see large cons happening until 2022. We might get some smaller under 1000 attendee cons toward the end of 2021.
Cons will eventually come back in some capacity but things will never be quite the same.
