I havent had the chance to catch any so far, but are they actually any good? Do they really offer anything close to the real thing?
Which ones have you tried?

Nope, it's usually 3 people sitting together make outdated jokes and making announcements for upcoming anime

how does an online con even work?

Fanime's unofficial one was good. It was really just several panelists running really solid panels over the weekend, CWF having online stuff, and BARCon doing their usual friday fanime show on twitch. So it was a solid selection and chill time.

UK Games Expo was pretty good. Huge online dealer's room, panels and live events were streamed, active Discord chat, games for participants and even a cosplay event. Not as good as the real thing of course, but it was a damn good replacement.

Otakuthon felt the closest to an actual con, but it's still not as good as an actual con. It had all the basic con stuff (exhibit hall, artist alley, panels, vidya). Otaquest Connect was happening at the same time and had the best interviews and great concerts.

Anime Central was the first virtual con this year. It had a minecraft server. Otaquest was lit.

AX Lite was fucking terrible, the hosts had no charisma and there was this one guy that just kept manically grinning into the camera. The content was entirely those awkward interview videos you sit through at a panel while looking through the schedule to see what else is going on.
Aniplex’s virtual con was better because they had a variety show format and guests/hosts that actually knew how to be entertaining. They hosted shit like a cooking show between voice actors;

I'm conflicted as to whether this video is cringe or nostalgic for the 2000s, I'm feeling both
