Dolly kei is the hardest jfash to get into because you need a lot of intricate, high quality pieces that are rare to find in modern fashion besides occasional maximalist capsules from D&G or Marc Jacobs. Grimoire was so special, you can try to curate the look yourself but RIP

>> No.10444413

>>10444407
You definitely don't need high end fashion to wear Dolly Kei, the style isn't for you if you're looking to get it from modern designers.
Curating it is the fun of the style, digging through antique stores, art shows, vintage resale and rennaisance festivals, pulling apart clocks and dolls and sewing them back together for accessories, using upholstery as clothing, I could go on. Its a look that requires a lot of time and thought and that's what I love about it, every piece looks like it has a story. Some of my favorite pieces for Dolly Kei came from a $1 bulk bin outside of a middle of nowhere thrift store, I love to thrift for it every time I travel.

[Incoming blogpost 1/2]
A lot of the western blogs aren't great, but i dont know if theres any Japanese ones. They don't really say much besides the obvious, that Dolly Kei is a fashion inspired by Western folklore, fairy tales and Victorian clothing that focuses on lots of pattern and texture mixing with an overloaded look.
Its really a fashion you have to develop an eye for yourself, but there's some great pictures in this thread, I even got a few I didn't have. Look over lots of snaps and you'll notice similarities, a few things like
>warm neutrals and deep jewel tones
>heavy textiles, focus on gobelin, velvet, tweed, wool, beading and embroidery, etc.
>use light textiles like lace and chiffon only as over layers and accents
>mostly gold for metallics, sometimes pewter, but mixing is even better
>any shoes, but a natural texture is best(leather, wood)
>vintage hats, flowers, bonnets, ribbons and headbands make great headwear, combine them for a unique look
>light makeup, but red lips and blush look good
>natural hair colors, simpler hair styles(soft waves, braids)
>an overall creepy, mystical look, use religious and occult motifs, doll parts, clocks, flora and fauna

>> No.10444443

>>10444441
Color coordination and silhouette arent the goal here, focus on an overloaded look that overwhelms the eye. Pair smaller patterns with larger patterns, layer textiles from lightest to heaviest, and then overload even more with layered belts, necklaces and brooches.
Crafting really enhances a look, cover a tote bag in vintage lace and patches, make rosettes with the scraps, turn doll and watch parts into jewelry, put things on your head or on a necklace chain that aren't supposed to be.
When thrifting or antiquing, even using eBay, these pieces are common: Traditional garb like Nordic printed skirts or Mexican handpainted ones and dirndls, antique victorian hats, bonnets, and shawls(though I HIGHLY reccomend if you buy antique clothing, research how to properly care for and store it), Oddfellows and other masonic collars, pins, hats, etc., 70's/80's bohemian and Victorian revival like Gunne Sax and Laura Ashley dresses. These days, OTT classic lolita prints and the longer solid dresses work well too. Antique and upholstery stores are a great source of gobelin and those massive tassels to wear as necklaces and belts.

Hope that helps! When making a coordinate, my preferred method is starting with a basic dress or outfit combo, then throwing things at it until it looks sufficiently wild.
Dolly Kei is pretty dead and the Instagram tag is mostly full of garbage like OP, but you can still find a few people wearing it if you dig.

thanks for the advice! i have some big pretty DIY brooches i made from some antique picture frames that i think would look interesting with it. i think the fact that its so bulky was throwing me off, i look like a big fluffy chonk with it on and a lot of coords are more fitted around the torso with corsets and such. i'm pretty new to wearing dolly kei so i'm still learning but i've been having so much fun shopping and DIYing for it!
