The cosplay is not bad at all but the photoshoot is really lame. I know cgl hates on the asian cosplayers but lol you are proving my point the asian cosplayers photos shit on these wack pedestrian walmart style photos taken by cosplayers in America.

For one thing the location choices are often wack. I never see Americans doing photos in the cool and interesting locations chosen by Chinese and Russian photographers from abandoned palaces in castles, to having studios that are equipped with back drops specifically for cosplay purposes to having full production teams for photo shoots.

I would choose a more interesting location . For the life me ppl I will understand how put all this efforts into the cosplay but choose the least interesting locations to actually do a shoot at lol. Also the photos are boring . It's like nobody puts effort into their photos in America. Japan and China do alot of story telling and cinematic cosplay and that seems to be completely absent from the American scene. Why do ppl rarely use professional studios with high quality props and back drops, why dont more cosplayers collaborate like they do in China and utilize the best of each other skills to create something great . Like oh one friend is a master with photography, the other is good with building props, the other is amazing make up artist its seems like ppl want to be a hack of all trades. When I did photoshoots in Russia and china I loved the team work the cosplayers had it was like watching a full movie production the way they would put together a photo shoot. America on the other hand seems to lack this collaborative element when it comes to cosplay.

If anything I would say cosplayers need to take a more active role in the photo shoot stop being so passive . Why is she sitting there like that ?? Why did she choose this particular location?? What is going with the composition??

In china, all of that would been laid out before the photographer even started shooting .

It looks like they just picked a location and was like hey let's shoot.

this contributes to it, but isn’t necessarily the entire reason. there’s tons of asian cosplayers in the west that manage to produce similar work with gorgeous locations despite the lack of studios. it’s a matter of the way cosplay and photos are viewed by the community. for most western cosplayers, the costume is the most important, so that’s where most of the effort goes. The photo shows off the costume, but not necessarily the person or character. for asian cosplayers, the overall result is the most important, hence the emphasis on photo manipulation and location, which contribute just as much as the costume does

i don't think this is necessarily true, for most asian photos, the ideas and concepts are collaborated on, much more so than with western photographers. a lot of asian cosplayers do their own editing in addition to the photographer's as well.

That's not true at all the first photo in this thread which I posted the cosplayer designed the outfit herself from scratch it's actually apart of her fashion line, she came up with the concept for the shoot and is very involved in the process.

Just scroll through her twitter page. She was also photographed by several photographers at comiket in Japan and looked just as good.

Well she isn't really a good example she is professional fashion designer and works in the fashion industry. It shows in alot of her work. I wouldn't compare her to the average cosplayer. Honestly that comment sounds like jealous I bedn to comiket in japan and a few events in china lots of ppl with amazing costumes but gasp they also have amazing photos .

All the jojo cosplays are designs made by her . She did the make up in most of her cosplays and styled her hair and designed the outfits .

I love her work because her cosplay photoshoots often remind of editorial fashion shoots which is something she brings from the industry she works in the fashion industry.

Most people on the farms always loved/respected Yaya Han because she was a good businesswoman and worked hard making the majority of her own cosplays, etc. even before her boob job. And most people acknowledged she got it to improve her profits/physically suit her cosplays better.

Conversely, most people on the farm hate Nigri for being supposedly shitty to her romantic partners/possibly cheating, butchering characters or doing a shoddy job on the few cosplays she did make herself (or claim to make herself, she also stole credit from people supposedly as well), and trying and failing to recreate the success of her original "sexy pikachu" cosplay with shitty eveeloutions that were honestly all awful and didn't even have the benefit of looking hot.

Idk about cgl but in real life I rarely find the stereotype of women shitting on each other to appeal to men to be true. Even on cgl most women don't give a fuck about men and many of us are not even straight or just generally find male opinions on aesthetics irrelevant. Women are interested in different things and find different things appealing than men sometimes. Guys see tits, ass, "slim" enough waist and no deformities and they call a girl hot. Women have higher standards than that and have an interest in their character generally speaking on top of that.

We're here because we like cosplay, not because we want to see paintings over top of photos of cosplays. The art is the costume, the effort put in by the cosplayer. Covering it with way too much shit removes the actual work that goes in. Photoshopping takes 1/100th of the time and work it takes to actually make a costume.

This is really untrue for any decent photoshopping. There’s been times I’ve had to photoshop in some detail I forgot and really kicked myself because it takes 1+ hr per photo to shoop it in, but would only take an hour max to make it or fix irl. Same thing with more complicated things, it takes forever to shoop things in well. Ofc if you just draw in the whole cosplay without giving a fuck about realism it would take less time, but to make a well photoshopped pic takes forever and even more so if you’re doing a whole set of photos.

If you pay attention to area around her head the editing is terrible and if that's the cosplayer I think it is the photographer original picture probably did not look like that she went back over it and edited it again .

Anyways, I'd like to end on the fact that it's been mentioned upthread that the whole reason a lot of these asian-styled photos are so much more dynamic than their western-styled counterparts is because they're less focused on just the person themselves, and more on the photo as a whole. Even the shots that are closer up have a lot of thought put into lighting that highlights the mood or vibe, even if it puts some of the outfit in less detail. A photo where every detail of your costume and work stands out is frankly probably going to be really flat and boring looking to anyone besides yourself and others who are specifically interested in looking at the finer details of your craft.

Not everyone who picks up a camera knows what their doing. Asian cosplayers network with professionals thats why they get the best pictures. Plus Cosplay is commercialized in Asian countries. Most of Europe still sees it as a taboo hobby. (Though its gotten more popular over the years. Instagram and facbook has definitely expanded the scene. )
