Anons how do you guys deal with broad shoulders while still wearing cute things?

I end up feeling like a crossdresser when i wear anything with frills or cute prints, the contrast with my undelicate body is so ugly. I'm not even fat, just have big shoulders, no waist and a large ribcage (fridge shaped...). And yeah, i'm cis. My mom and aunt have this same shape.

It got so bad that i threw out all the clothes i liked and kept only jeans and tshirts a few months ago. I couldn't handle seeing my reflection or seeing myself in pictures anymore.

But i still drool over dresses and printed skirts, cardigans... i want to go back to wearing things that i like. Do you any of you have this issue?

Hey wow I'm in the exact same boat, I only recently got back into jfash after giving up and only wearing men's XXXL tshirts with tights. I'm petite in theory but my shoulders and upper arms make me look like I'm thick all over, when my waist, hips, and torso are actually quite narrow.

My best advice from trial and error is to get clothes that are cut with big or flowy sleeves and a lower neckline, to make it look like the clothes are creating that width and not you. I particularly like square necks and boatnecks because their wider shoulder seam actually sits on my shoulders. I also love sack/babydoll dresses because no one can tell what shape is under there but you still look cute.

Big hair and/or head accessory, big skirt, define waist as much as possible. Avoid very high collars, big Peter Pan collars, ruffles on the shoulders and puffy sleeves.

Brand JSKs without corset lacing are too big on me but I can’t even move my arms in brand OPs and most blouses. IW boleros are a godsend but I wish I could fit their OPs.

>> No.10434310

>>10434308
For me the trick to IW and other smaller OPs is getting ones with sleeves that have a button, if I unbutton them it makes the dress 200% more comfortable

*I meant short sleeves, obviously this doesn't work with long sleeved OPs

Ideally find something that makes your hips look like they're more in proportion with your shoulders. Trying out different skirts might help. You may also want to consider looks that are belted at the waist to create the illusion of having a thinner waist.

On top of that people have already mentioned puffy or drape-y sleeves.

I have an athletic build, naturally always been thick, muscular with broad shoulders and always been about a US size 6 or 8. Cute little blouses and little sleeves are heinous lol. I can fit in brand OPs, except for my shoulders/muscular arms, so I just wear JSKs. I've found that dresses with poofier sleeves or with a certain silhouette make me look more well proportioned, as well as wearing a twintail wig (which I already loved the look of, but when I realized it literally hides and changes how my shoulders look, I love them for lolita. I used to wear my natural hair more. Depends on the coord)

Pic is a rudimentary drawing of the shape sleeves I was talking about that make my arms/shoulders look better. It's weird because you'd think big poofy longer sleeves would make your arms look bigger, but nahhh

Big hair, big skirt, anything to balance it out. 3/4 and mid length puff sleeves are godlike. I find short sleeved puff tops can be flattering sometimes, but only if they have a very low neckline. Do not wear puff sleeves with cardigans unless they're very baggy because you will look like the hulk.

Try to avoid tight sleeves and tank tops. For normie clothes I look pretty disproportionate in shorts and only wear skirts.

I feel this so much, I’m shaped like an upside down triangle. Wide shoulders, 96cms at the bust but only 68cms and 93cms for waist and hips. I feel so awkward wearing anything high waisted and you’ll never catch me dead in anything that’s strapless.

I’m 89-71-102 and lolita barely fits me thanks to my linebacker shoulders and massive ribcage. All my dresses need to have full back shirring in order for me to pull it over my damn upper body. Don’t even get me started on zippers.

Not that anon but I wouldn't recommend puffy sleeves at all. I have broad shoulders too and all of my puffy sleeved dresses and tops (sleeves similar to your image) make me look like a linebacker.
Mid length puff sleeves like the other anon suggested are a different story though, provided they're made of drapey material. Since they're longer, they add volume lower on your arms which can take the emphasis away from your shoulders. Sort of like pic related.

Low necklines are ideal, but when a blouse or dress does have a higher neckline, a good trick can be to break up the shoulder area with a chunky or eye catching necklace in a different color. Long hair sidepieces pulled to the front can create a similar effect.
Here's an example that uses both of these, although this girl isn't broad shouldered you can see how the hair and the necklace offset the short sleeves.

You also want to watch the proportions in general and the material that the fabric around your shoulders is made of. De-emphasizing your shoulders means not too much layering on the top half of your outfit, and avoiding thicker fabrics like cotton or velveteen. Bigger poof and more voluminous details like ruffles on the skirt while keeping the bodice and blouse fairly simple and clean make a huge difference. Big hair and hair accessoiries help a lot too. If you can't get your hair to the volume you want, berets (and half bonnets) are hair accessoiries that will create this effect for you. If you can manage it, never ever pull all of your hair to the back.
Pic related would be an amalgamation of everything you shouldn't do as a broad shouldered lolita. Bulky fabric, huge puff sleeves, a very wide and high collar, low poof, no fitted bodice, very short and thin hair and a tiny hairbow. Old school lolita in general would possibly be the hardest style to wear with broader shoulders (but not impossible to pull off at all!), because garments like capes and bulky blouses made of thick fabric are so prevalent.

- Dark colors recede. The shirt or cardigan on your shoulders should always be darker or the same color as the body. No light colored tops with darker aprons over them, no light colored cardigans over darker dresses.

- Watch the collars. I hate adding bulk to my neck, YMMV but black mock neck or stand collars are the only types I like.

- Waistless and drop waist dresses. Nothing with a defined waist bc it will make your top half look like a box. Princess seam (pic related) is what it's called when the waistless dresses are tailored to your body with vertical lines, which is what you want if you have boobs or a butt. Otherwise you will look lumpy under waistless dresses.

- Cap sleeves (not puffy) for short sleeves. Cheongsam/Chinese inspired dresses are good for this.

- Someone already said it but long sleeves should be poofy or otherwise wider past the elbow. Lantern, bishop, bubble, bell etc.

I hope this helps.

I find the Catherine OP quite flattering for exactly the reasons you said. Despite the puffy shoulder cap, the fact that the sleeve is also wider towards the wrist completely hides my wide-ass shoulders, it just looks like it's the sleeve. Needless to say sausage sleeves are my new best friend.
