Recently witnessed some drama between a cosplayer I follow and an IG account that posted comparisons between photos of her irl versus the photos she posts.

Drastic difference and it got me thinking how much photoshop is too much?

IMO almost any photoshop that alters your features is too much. i'm fine with smoothing your skin a bit/getting rid of blemishes or stretch marks but completely rearranging your skeletal structure is just silly.

I find some extreme photoshopping, especially for cosplay pretty cool for accuracy and when the character itself is inhuman. I think the main problem with Photoshop is when people try to claim that it isn't when it is. I see nothing wrong with it overall as long as the person doesn't lie about it. That said, the comparison photos are still pretty funny and eye opening. There are a lot of men who truly believe that the Photoshop images of girls are actually what they look like.

I noticed that this is more prevalent for cosplayers that aren't from the US.

I think ideas such as being comfortable with who you are and try not being someone you're not is something we're taught at a young age that there is conflicts like this.

Growing up asian, looks was something to focus on. We always had to give the impression that we're wealthy when expecting guests, even though we weren't wealthy.

I don't really think this is it for this situation, but you're right about Asia having different ideals and standards. In Asia photoshop is the norm and expected: it's about bringing the character to life in pictures as much as possible. Everyone knows cosplayers photoshop and expects them to, and its not really a big deal unless they look literally unrecognizable. That's why Misa's photoshop wasn't really a huge deal until it hit the west, where it really exploded. Cosplayers guest at cons all the time there with huge posters of their shooped photos right next to them, and no one really gives a fuck. People /want/ to see nice shooped pictures. Even random event photographers will airbrush and photoshop pictures before posting them online.

I used to work with Japanese cosplayers and I thought a lot of them actually looked BETTER without photoshop or the weird shit they do where they contort their faces with tape and glue for cosplay. A lot of them were actually really cute and then they go out of their way to make themselves look like freaky aliens with unnaturally narrow faces. Some of the Japanese guys I worked with (mostly also cosplayers) said that most Japanese guys find it really unattractive too.

I always edit out my nasolabial folds and marionette lines from my photoshoot pics. I don't go overboard with the nose or jaw because I honestly don't have the skill level to make it not look unnatural. But I will say at least for asian girls, the nasolabial folds from smiling naturally (in most of the candid or unedited shots) and pronounced marionette lines or eyebag shadows (usual culprit is the convention lighting) make you look aged. Its a big improvement to get rid of them in edited photos.

For me, learning how much Photoshop and apps it goes into these things killed my self-image. I used to look up to all these pro cosplayers so much, only to learn just about anybody can look like that with a bit of money, effort and shoop.

You'd think it boost my confidence, but instead ever since I got to know the tools myself, my brain got so rewired I can literally detect lapses right away, can tell when people use fake certain sets of SNOW/Meitu makeup, and I have felt so obligated to use it so much on myself that I feel disgusting looking at myself in real life.
It has killed any confidence in my real image. It hurts to know I am nowhere near the edited picture and I will never be.
The other day I genuinely had to stop because looking at my own face I couldn't tell what was right or what was wrong anymore and it was literally hurting my brain.

I was floored at the variation in how I looked in the same cosplay same time window but from a cropped dslr with 50mm, a full frame door at 85mm, my phone pics with and without snow, rear camera pics taken with friends, etc. The distortion of the lens size at all is boggling even before the editing and of course there's the aperture settings etc.

Way too few people understand this shit. Even a lot of photographers don't, you always see those "you don't need that lens, just walk closer/further away" people and they don't get how much difference changing focal length can make for the same framing.

FL changes the hell out of how the background looks too, long lenses are pretty much always better for con photography (if you can get far enough back to frame with them) because they help filter out busy backgrounds.
