I’m 22 and I’m just being able to get into it. I’ve been a fan of lolita fashion since I was about 12/13 and yeah it’s expensive and it wasn’t very accessible back in 2008/2009. My mom was the type of person who thought club penguin was going to steal our information just from me being in it :/ so I for sure wasn’t getting my pre teen hands on any lolita.

You're never "too old" with a HUGE asterisk. Meaning, the older you get the more you need to carefully separate out the core style elements of a fashion and cast aside the youth culture aspect of it. The reason why Lolita can look bad on older women is that a lot of women end up trying to look/act/seem much younger then they are and that makes it awkward and not cute.

What's cute, at any age, is understanding the core identifying style elements of the fashion you want to take on and adjust as needed for it to make more sense with your current age. A good example in Lolita would be ankle-socks; even at 25 I did not feel comfortable in ankle socks as they invoked a super-young vibe. I could still wear OTKs fine but something deep in my soul just screamed; "You're too old for the ankle socks". So I listened.

Now, this doesn't mean stuff like sweet Lolita is "out" for an older woman; but try to make sure it makes "sense" for you. Seriously look in the mirror and rule out some stuff; what hem length is really the most flattering for you now? What make-up actually compliments your face at this point? Don't follow a make-up tutorial by a 17-year old fashion model. Furthermore, if your hair is getting weird at this point, consider perhaps a very full pastel-color wig in a retro bob cut or 1950s-style fancy gloves instead of wrist cuffs.

30 was old 30 years ago when everyone was smoking, drinking and hanging out in the sun without sunscreen for hours on end causing them to age way more than needed. Not to mention in your 20s you were expected to be a full adult with you own house and kids.

Today we've started to realize 20 yr olds are still teens and act/treated as such. They're (mostly) still in school and living with their parents and as well all are aware, marriages and even sex in this generation is happening much later in life. With the help of skincare knowledge, smoking down, (though rising again because vaping) and people stayong indoors more often, 30 yr olds are passing for 20s easy. I live in Japan and I’d say the majority of active lolitas are late 20s to early 30s. You simply can’t afford it when you’re young unless your family is rich, you date a rich guy, or you’re a prostitute. The Japanese equivalent to /cgl/ is always outing girls for being hookers.
Obviously there are exceptions. You can bargain hunt for used clothes and wash the awful stains out of low grade Closet Child finds or you can buy a bunch of cheap Chinese shit and look awful. There are also super old people who have been into the fashion forever and give zero fucks. My point is that there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being older. You should wear whatever you want.

I think if you are not confident enough to just do it and you have to ask, especially here, then maybe it’s not for you. But as far as ‘are you too old’, no. Lots of factors will determine whether you look good in it though, dressing for your shape, how you do your hair and makeup etc. But the air of confidence needs to be there or you will look out of place in the fashion regardless of your age. That’s the biggest mistake I see, people trying to wear it but it’s obvious by the way they carry themselves that they feel like imposters in a costume. It shows.

I'm turning 40 this year. I've started wearing the fashion a few years ago and I still enjoy it and do not plan to quit anytime soon. Sometimes I wear glasses to give myself a "crazy granny" look. I discovered that it goes with sweet quite well.
