I need some help guys... Recently found out one of my dream dresses I owned was really a replica. And it was a close friend who sold it to me. I thought I was getting a really good deal, she was giving me a discount because it was really damaged. (I buy damaged often so this isn't unusual for me) I only found out it was a replica when I went to sell it since due to covid I needed the money more than I needed the dress. upon inspection and comparison I realised it was a replica. I paid several times more than the replica cost brand new. When I told her she had sold me a replica she said she didn't know andblamed anyone but herself, that she had received it as a gift when she was 14 so it's not her fault (she's rich and has a rich family). I told her I wanted a break from being friends since she's had a long history of using me, abusing me and stealing my things.

I'm so angry at myself for thinking I could trust her. I should have known before I bought it. She's one of my bestfriends how could she have done this to me. I've done so much for her and this is how she treats me. I want to throw the dress out.

To make up for it she's getting me something off mercari for the same value i paid for the dress.

She still hasn't properly apologized and im still upset about it. I don't want to be nice anymore I need to stop forgiving her. I'm terrified of her and often avoid confrontation at all costs. I don't go on here often but I really need some help right now. What should I do?

(Sorry if this isn't the right place to post this)

Can't she just refund you and you give the dress back? I mean she's offering to buy you something new for the same value so it's not like she's against giving you the money. There's a very real possibility she had no idea as well.

Im just as angry at myself for not realizing sooner her excuse for the replica quality dress was that it was a newer dress therefore lower quality than their old stuff. and replica wasn't on my mind when i bought it considering how against replicas and good at identifying them she seems to be.

a lot of off brand tries to go for the niche market since the bigger, more obvious stuff is done well by brand. lady sloth used to make pretty JetJ style painting prints but switched to oversaturated ~quirky~ prints when that sold better

there's also the fact that every brand looks like their brand. like baby doesn't look like ap and vice versa, but because they are both brands we see their style under the "brand" category.

Seconding >>10375304, but an additional element is that the brands do have "celebrity" designers whose style we do like and recognise, eg- Imai Kira, Yoh. They often have a trademark style and an existing fanbase, meanwhile indie brands seem to use whatever artist student they find lying around or straight up "copy" an existing style. The fluctuating differences in style isn't really helping their brand image either, you can't even get a consistent style out of the expensive Krad Lanrete except "it's almost as good as brand" because half their designs "look like" brand, ie- they're just copying someone else's style.

eg, for Angelic Pretty in particular Maki and Asuka aren't just the brand designers, they're also billed as illustrators. So AP designs and prints have always been really consistent because it's the same two people who were managing all the releases all this time. People who like their style will follow them straight to another brand, seriously. AP even releases artbooks of their prints once in a while.

That's why you'd find people support Sheglit because the designer is ex-BPN, people want to know where the designer for VM has gone after she quit, or Axes Femme or Soufflesong hypes up a release because the print was designed by aatp designer.

(This is in addition to all the wonky art indie brands seem to make)

I think Chinese brands put more emphasis on selling quickly at a cheaper price point than "burandos" so they focus more on being able to manufacture pieces with speed. They also use kitsch more to sell dresses, and tend to feature allover prints. I think they also put less time into the prints, so whatever is in the first draft is what gets printed. Japanese burando prints tend to be more dimensional and graphic, in that the designs stand out more strongly from the background, and they also tend to be less busy. Additionally, taobao brands often cut their dresses so they don't need to be fitted very well to a body. They use high waisted or sack designs, and if there is a natural waist it tends to not be super fitted. One of the things I love about AP is how flattering their natural waist dresses are, and there's no doubt a lot of work went into that. This isn't to say there aren't some really lovely taobao pieces, just that they tend to put more emphasis on trendiness and fast manufacturing.
However it's pretty obvious that japanese burandos saw the huge volume of dresses chinese brands can sell, and they decided they wanted a piece of that. Now so many of APs designs look very taobao, with allover prints, loose silhouettes, and cheaper materials. But that's just the way trends are right now.

Asuka has never been billed as an illustrator, only a designer (mostly accessories iirc). Maki is one of the illustrators, there are more now which has led to AP having a much more varied style than in some years ago.

The values are wack, I can hardly distinguish the ponies from the sugary macaron background. If the contrast was higher it would look much better. And that's not even touching on the bad cartoon horse anatomy. Even if it's very much stylized, it still has to follow some rules of anatomy in order to stay believable. AP knows what they're doing and and it's very apparent in their design and color choices. They know how to make a print pop even when the background is busy/detailed or the same color (Fruity Lemon comes to mind, the chicks still stand out from the lemons despite both being yellow). That to me is the main difference between between brand and indie when it comes to prints.

I don’t have any artistic background so it’s hard for me to articulate but there is something that always looks very flat about taobao illustrations and print designs to me. I agree taobao designers/illustrators aren’t bad, there is just some kind of depth missing when I look at them. Maybe this is dumb but brand prints often looks like an illustration from a book I would have owned as a child, which is what draws me to them. Taobao never really captures the same feeling for me.

I am a Sailor Moon Fan, so that certainly plays into it. I also bought the AP one and it is the worst bran item I have ever owned. I received them at the same time so my fondness for the AatP one might reflect that.

>> No.10375544

>>10375529

It's often screen printed with a specific kind of ink, assuming Asian companies use the same method, and brand designers seem to adjust their artwork to suit that printing method using "blobs" of color to shade and outline shapes rather than perfectly crisp lines the way taobao designs do, which are mostly sublimation printed because it's cheap but it requires the fabric to always be synthetic and usually has a slight sheen.

I don't know a ton about printing methods but brand cotton at the very least is printed with processes that result in a much nicer result even if the design was the same.

That post was just the most recent one in this thread, but even up the thread you can see an anon saying that ems is totally shut down. I was gonna buy it this morning and that's when I saw it was sold out. I regret not buying it sooner, yes it is directly my fault not to but it's not helpful for everyone stretching the truth/spreading misleading info and telling others not to bother, and they would be indirectly at fault so to say if their posts scare others from buying.

I usually don't fret too much whenever a dress I want from one of those brands sells out. But there are certain brands I'll buy immediately and directly from now because I'm not going to count on it showing up secondhand. Here's hoping your dress shows up eventually otherwise you've just learned a very valuable lesson.

Wow someone bought this for that price with no actual evidence it's truly an AP item?? (Pic related)

Stained $950 Honey Cake and a "Protoype" dress for $500 with literally not even an AP tag.

Not an APfag so I'm most likely wrong, but wasn't Dream Sky one of those heavily-replicated AP dresses back in the day? So wouldn't it be more likely that it's a fake than it is real? iirc some of the heavily replicated dresses had some hard-to-spot replicas.
Even just looking at the replica page on lolibrary, this seems to match the description, especially with the comment about the lace...

Further digging and poorly made mspaint collage to back up my last post. The lolibrary page even says that most of the factory replicas have hearts instead of star beads on the straps (source: https://lolibrary.org/items/taobao-dream-sky-factory-replica-jsk)) and this one has those hearts. And the seller didn't post an up close shot of the lace, but it kinda looks like the generic replica lace imo. Again, I don't go for AP or sweet, so I could be wrong and something like this was legit.

Holy shit that is honestly probably a replica. RIP the person who paid $500 for that shit.

Lmao that's definitely a replica. Someone should message this to the buyer.

I'm not surprised, that seller seemed kind of shady from the beginning. Who the hell keeps 5-7 yo dresses in nwt condition and then prices them like we're still in egl-comm-sales times?

>> No.10377722

>>10377709

Done. Hopefully they didn't permanently lose any money. The seller should be banned.

Now I'm almost certain those Holy Lanterns are all replicas lol. It is pretty popular for replicas. At least the high waist JSK was, Idk about the zipper one she's selling.

"Prototype" dresses have a huge SAMPLE tag inside btw.

Their listings are being posted to the dd thread, even though their other listings seem ok, other than the stained honey cake and higher prices, I'm worried some desperate anon is gonna get scammed out of a lot of money, and given the current times that's just low.

I feel like the buyer is parading their time in the fashion in the listing titles for insincere reasons too, like providing assurance to other lolitas (especially newbies) that their dresses are legit and justify those prices. Although I admit that sounds like a stretch, but with some of the shady descriptions (oh I tooootallyyyy didn't notice a gigantic stain on the front of hc) I can't help but feel that way about it.

I looked at her feedback history and it seems like she's familiar with the market in the current times, so why are they all priced so high?
She also sold that misty sky jsk before, 3 years ago, so it wouldn't even make sense if she's selling almolst everything nwt because she's a hoarder.

Samefag, but I wonder if that person is the same as the ebay scalper/reseller from the BST thread who sold AP with btssb tags.

Actually parading their time would be even more damning, because Dream Sky "factory rejects" had multiple posts and was a big deal on egl back in the day. Along with the girl that thought she was comparing 'fake' and 'real' Dream Sky but turned out to have been scammed into buying a "protoype" by the replicamaker.

Pretty much implicated herself now as a deliberate scammer with no room for "someone sold this to me I didnt know". Someone should report it to the LM mods and see if they remove the account for obvious scammery.

I looked her up and she seems genuine, but she is definitely pricing for the trump bucks. Her lacemarket screen name pulls up her twitch where you can see her wardrobe in the background. Her username also pulled up a bunch of old livejournal stuff. She's no stranger to replicas, but I think her HLs are real.
