But more seriously, a lot of Japanese folks say that they went to high schools that didn't have uniforms (they do exist) and feel as though they missed out on some part of fundamental high school experience. Same goes for people in Europe or North America where school uniforms aren't as common.

For me personally, it's because my school uniform wasn't great so it's nice to wear some cute ones that I didn't get to as a teenager.

Us 'Muricans have school uniforms but they're ugly-ass khakis and polo shirts.

Half of it is weeb and half of it is legit fashion. The whole idea of nanchatte is getting to experience the carefree life of youth again. Either you didn't appreciate your high school years when you had them, or you were bullied/generally had a bad time, etc. It's like getting to do a do-over as an adult. Some people even organize 'class trips' for nanchatte and everyone goes somewhere as a group to make friends and hang out. I know Disney is popular with them.

Hell even a lot of high school girls admit that after school they change from their school uniform to another uniform that's more their style/cuter and just hang out like that with friends.

Nobody is larping anything lol. You're not pretending to be a character, you're yourself in a fashion that resembles a uniform (just like lolita isn't cosplay). I still do all the same shit I would have in jeans and a hoodie. Run errands, grocery shop, go out with friends, go on dates. I even wore nanchatte to my super laid back office where I worked, and before that I wore it to classes in uni.

And I emphasize "resembles a uniform" because nanchatte usually doesn't look exactly like actual uniform. The hemlines are shorter and more flattering in nanchatte (and by this I mean a little above the knee or mid thigh as opposed to right at the knee), you can incorporate bright or pastel colours, cute hair accessories, and make-up, which a lot of actual school in Japan forbid you to do.

Nanchatte lets me get my jfash fix without having to spend $100-300 on a garment bc it's much easier to get really nice looking components from Bodyline and taobao (which is a bit more challenging with lolita, my other jfash of choice).

I may be wrong, but I noticed sometimes we overthink stuff like this, I have given up trying to find a common reason for the appeal and if there is, I find it's hard to grasp and generalise and not really conscious in the first place. In Japan seifuku is regarded as a nice style overall and being able to wear that kind of fashion outside school is a way to take something that already looks agreeable and make it look even cuter than school code. Serafuku elements are always present even in garments from all kind of brands and not necessarily J-fashion, even more basic ones. Think about how common it is to see sailor collars around. I guess the more positive outlook on uniforms also comes from preferring more feminine fashion - skirts, bows and all sort of socks are definitely more common and appreciated in J-fashion.

Can confirm, my friend went to a private high school and loved borrowing my seifuku stuff because it was so much nicer than her uniform. (She often complained as her uniform was a polo+long beige skirt and she preferred the plaid patterns+bows) We dressed up and twinned a lot when we hung out just because we thought it was cute

haha I can understand enough to follow the threads on weibo. It's true that high schools limit their sales to actual students, but the students do occasionally sell their stuff on fril, mercari, and yahoo auctions (also check out seifuku-ichiba). You just have to use the right keywords and sometimes the right shopping service :)

Be warned though, the most popular uniforms go for thousands on the secondhand market. The one you posted above - Shinagawa joshi gakuen - probably goes for almost $2000USD+ a set these days (However you can pick up other cute, lesser known ones for pretty cheap)

Actual seifukus are well constructed to last years of daily wear, so the uniform pieces cost hundreds to begin with. Add to that the prestigiousness and recognizability of these private schools’ designs (only enrolled students can buy) and their value holds and increases even when secondhand. A set can easily cost thousands.

Most private schools with uniforms are quite expensive per piece to start with and they encourage students to sell the uniform either back to the school or to another student as they don't like randoms wearing the uniforms (because they could be mistaken as students and give the school a bad reputation). So I imagine there may be rules against selling it to the general public and only some people are willing to risk it for the potential profit

I don't really have a worst, since I haven't worn it out that much, but my best was probably when I was eating ice cream with a friend and an older lady came up complimenting my skirt, telling me she used to wear skirts just like that and that she might just go home and dig them up again. I wore a nanchatte inspired outfit to Disney and Universal (Universal was more Harry Potter themed) once and got a mix of reactions.

Best one was probably two cast members at Disney seeing my patterned tights and getting me to come over so they could show another cast member.

Worst was definitely the cast member at a restaurant I went to who asked me who I was dressed up as. I told them I just wanted to look nice and she turned around and yelled back across the serving area to a male cast member "She said she just wanted to look nice!" I was pretty mortified.

For me I've made it more of my "I'm going on holiday where no one knows me, who cares what strangers think so I'll go around in nanchatte and look cute!" outfit. Every time I go somewhere now since I travel alone I always pack nanchatte.

My first attempt at nanchatte was at Tokyo Disney! It wasn’t that good an outfit but I had so much fun and I didn’t feel strange wearing it. I saw lots of other people in nanchatte but I didn’t dare to talk to them, I think it would have been strange.
Staff at the harajuku conomi store are really friendly! I really want to go back there the next time I travel to japan. It was super hard to find tho? Took us quite a while lol

Honestly I don't think most people care about what others wear at Disney, but its a really good place to try something out!

I skipped out on bodyline since I was in Tokyo just after christmas and during new years, and it was incredibly crowded.
Harajuku is a great place to get nanchatte stuff tho, I found a whole outfit in a random store on takeshita street and paris kids has some (albeit cheap quality) neckbows for a good price. I also found some really good short, loose socks in wego!

Harajuku really is worth it! The spots you have marked out are really good as well, if you’re in to sweet stuff I really recommend cafe Ron Ron. It can be hard to get in tho.
Honestly I felt like I stuck out no matter if I wore western fashion or jfash. Being a tall European does that.

Male cast member here, Guest Relations & Main Street merchandise are the only ones to my knowledge that come close to the fashion, the rest is as the other anon said, mostly vintage/retro inspired given the themeing.

Anyways, I made a post a few month back mentioning how I didn't care for ties. I added a plain black one and I was actually pretty pleased with it and was thinking about more plain colors. I love the footwear. I think what we're really lacking is alternative shoes to wear with nanchatte. I think most of us just only know about the Korean trend of wearing sports shoes but I really hate the loafers, I always get blisters from them, so it'd be nice to have other options.

I honestly feel like loafers are super comfortable, but it might be the shape of mine? Mine are more western-shaped and feel more like slippers imo.
I don't love heels with nanchatte but thats just a personal opinion, as long as the colours don't stand out and grabs all the attention, I guess you can wear whatever you want. (But like crocs with kogal? Yes. Go hard. The trashier the better)

The tough leather might be the problem, yeah. Honestly I just think mine are some cheap plastic material, I got them for cheap on asos. Mainly as a start out loafer but I haven't gotten around to getting more "appropriate" nanchatte styled ones.
I really think those plastic gem charms you can put in crocs are really cute! I'd love to get the platform crocs to do kogal in, but they're super expensive (at least the last time I checked, yeah, even the knock-offs) and I feel like they must be so much easier to fall in than normal platforms.

You should mention something about how Japanese sweatervests (and I think sweaters/cardigans as well) tend to have deeper necklines than Western ones. The purpose of it is (afaik) to show off a tie pattern better: With a Western sweatervest you only really get to see the knot at the top, but with a Japanese one you can see more of the tie blade as well.

That's literally the whole thing though. Nanchatte is dressing up in school uniform, that's the entire concept. Nanchatte means "just kidding!" (literal) and the terminology in this case means to play pretend in being a school student.

If you want to be extremely picky, kogal isn't nanchatte only because most kogal were actual students. But if a kogal had graduated and still wore it, that's technically nanchatte.

Today is a happy day. I hope I can get back to Japan next year, and work on some nice coords.

I'm only familiar(-ish) with lolita. Are there any similar no-gos with nanchatte? I read this thread but that's about it. What about incorporating nanchatte elements into a more experimental style? I also got two oversized black sailor collar hoodie jackets I like wearing with the skirt and some chunky black boots, but obviously that's not looking like a school uniform at all anymore. What about 'casual' nanchatte, is that a thing? Open my eyes, seagulls, please

When I was living in Japan, a woman STOPPED me while I was on my bicycle, just to tell me that my sleeves and shorts are too short. It was summer, and I was melting in my skin. She felt like it was her duty to tell me that I shouldn't wear such short clothes, it's dangerous etc. A whole-ass lecture.
I tower over Japanese women and most men, short clothes will always look even shorter on my body. It was super hot. The town was in the middle of nowhere, inaka land, absolutely nothing dangerous.

To me the biggest thing is avoiding things that look cheap/cosplay-y/used for unsavory purposes. I follow a pretty rigid school uniform look, so I don't really have input on more casual nanchatte ^^" the most casual I go is a checked skirt + polo I think, but others might be more experimental.

as far as nanchatte goes, looking like a school uniform is kind of the whole point. If you deviate too much from that you might get a cute outfit but it won't read as nanchatte anymore. You could probably swap out some colours (for example, pastel skirts or cardis), OR add experimental pieces, but messing with either too much will just create a cute generic non-nanchatte outfit. That's just the way I interpret it tho - I don't think there is any sort of guide or generally agreed upon rules like there are in lolita.

As far as casual nanchatte goes, what do you mean by casual? Using fewer fussy pieces (so forgoing a nice blazer and just wearing a shirt, collar open, etc.) or specifically casual looking or sporty looking? Cause both are a thing. You can wear running shoes/trainers with simple ankle/crew/knee high socks and a hoodie or sweatshirt, and it totally works.

also I just turned 30 and I still like the fashion. I'm gonna enjoy it as much as I can as long as I can.

Depends on what you want really? I got my first pair on asos, just some norime type, but I recently ordered a pair from Haruta, their "ladies" shoes go up to 25 or 26 cm I think? Otherwise, you might have to make do with men's loafers if you really want that japanese school type.

I think you need some loafers and maybe try switching the sweaters so you have less repeated color. Though honestly they look fine like this also.

Oh and I cannot believe I am saying this cause I sound like my dad, but don't slouch.
Bringing the shoulders back a bit does wonders for the human figure and helps clothing look nicer on us.
Right now all your shirts look bunchy and untidy because of the way you are leaning forward.

I get that these are just try on photos, but I suggest standing up straighter for them. Also those shirts will need a cami or nude bra worn with them. Ditch the white OTK socks.

If I'm being honest, the button ups don't look like they're very good quality, and I'd consider binning all but the blue one. Loose socks look cute, pink hair is pretty cute, cardigans look good
