This is my first katsucon; I just moved to the east coast from the west and honestly I’m nervous. All the videos I’ve seen have some extremely high quality cosplay- the aura is way tenser than ALA or similar west coast cons.

What should I expect? How should I prepare? It it true that the East cost con scene is way cliquer than the west coast?

Katsucon is very much the Top Tier Cosplay convention. From the moment you walk in it's just dominated by amazing cosplayers and a fuckton of photographers and it makes it near impossible to navigate when trying to not walk into someone's photoshoot.

It's a little overwhelming but it's also really cool to see the quality.

The only reason top tier cosplayers flood katsu is because the WCS prelims used to be there, and everyone fights over the gazebo. It’s a pretty location but it’s not as though katsucon itself is a con just for amazing cosplayers. You’ll see cosplays of all professional levels, but there are definitely way more people on the edge of being “famous” who try to bring out all the stops. And then occasionally you will see an actual “famous” cosplayer or two.

Part of it is that the location is so pretty that even hall pictures often turn out amazing

Best badge strategy is to wait and see which line is longer. They leave up their online sales page during the con so if at-con is shorter, buy there, if prereg is shorter, fill out prereg in line on your phone.

Rosa Mexicana and the Thai place are my group’s personal go-tos.
Elevation burger if you want something cheap but also to wait in line for 164,637,947 hours.
There’s this cute little deli/shop which does breakfasts and has a ton of different wines/craft beers if you’re into that
McDonald’s is nearby and within walking distance but there’s no real sidewalks so go at your own risk if you’re THAT poor
MGM is a short Uber ride away (my partner has walked before) and has a ton of different restaurants of varying prices too.

This easily an hour when I am a foreign traveler exhausted from a day at con. I cook traditional stir-fry for the most part. Throwing everything into a pot thoughtlessly still requires someone to obtain the ingredients first, including basic seasoning.

I was just there for Magfest. It's fine if you get there on thursday or friday early and hell any point past that. Like... all garages in the national harbor full kind of hell. They were having people park at the MGM and then shuttle them to the con.

Usually when people do that they're not wearing every cosplay for the same reason or amount of time. I technically have 4 cosplays Saturday but it's in the form of something comfy I can wear in the morning while being a photographer, a "real cosplay" for the afternoon, a casual cosplay group with friends in the early evening that we'll only just be shooting in, and a late night party outfit. People who wear four "high effort" they all want shot in a day exist and aren't having much fun most likely, but that's a very small minority, and they're probably more there for business than fun anyway.

Katsu is cold (except for the last couple of years when it wasn’t) so if you don’t do well in cold weather, you’ll want to be stuck in the Gaylord to prevent freezing. Also the harbor winds will snatch your wig if you’re not careful.

Katsu has nando’s, though, so if your inner fat kid likes peri peri chicken wings as much as mine does, that makes it “better” than AWA.
