Another year, another Katsu. Who's going and what costumes are you bringing, if any? What would you recommend seeing/doing at Katsucon?

I’m in the process of finishing a couple of costumes. I’m hoping to get a good chunk of prop related stuff knocked out today actually. I was sewing almost all day yesterday, so taking a break from that will be nice. Unfortunately that requires cutting out about a million feathers but thank goodness for cricut machines.
Costumes:
>Hawks from bnha
>Timeskip Edelgard from Fire Emblem: Three Houses (at my husband’s suggestion)
>Rose the Hat from Doctor Sleep

This is my first katsucon; I just moved to the east coast from the west and honestly I’m nervous. All the videos I’ve seen have some extremely high quality cosplay- the aura is way tenser than ALA or similar west coast cons.

Katsucon is very much the Top Tier Cosplay convention. From the moment you walk in it's just dominated by amazing cosplayers and a fuckton of photographers and it makes it near impossible to navigate when trying to not walk into someone's photoshoot.

It's a little overwhelming but it's also really cool to see the quality.

>> No.10321712

>>10321704
Awww shit I’m totally freaked out. I’m not sure if my cosplay is good enough to wear to this sort of convention. I don’t have any crazy armor builds or intricate dresses. I’m afraid to stick out like a sore thumb.

Also yeah guys I’m gonna look up Maryland’s laws about weed since I’m hearing such conflicting things lol.

I guess; is there anything I should absolutely avoid doing cosplay wise at this con? I just don’t want to seem like a total idiot around top tier cosplayers

>> No.10321717

>>10321712

Don't compare yourself to anyone else. Get inspired instead. Trying to compare yourself to anyone else is a waste of your time. That over the top amazing cosplayer? Probably has been learning the craft for many many years non-stop. But they started out not knowing anything at some point. Just keep that in mind.

>> No.10321733

>>10321712
The only reason top tier cosplayers flood katsu is because the WCS prelims used to be there, and everyone fights over the gazebo. It’s a pretty location but it’s not as though katsucon itself is a con just for amazing cosplayers. You’ll see cosplays of all professional levels, but there are definitely way more people on the edge of being “famous” who try to bring out all the stops. And then occasionally you will see an actual “famous” cosplayer or two.

Part of it is that the location is so pretty that even hall pictures often turn out amazing

>> No.10321758

>>10321712
Sadly Katsucon has become the con to do one of the following: get professional photos or party

Dress how you want because there's still plenty of 'average' cosplayers who dress up just for fun, and there's plenty of teenaged weebs too. Just like >>10321733 said, it's become THE con for higher tier cosplayers who often just hang out with their own cliques and show up just to show off for photographers.

Hell me and my group are doing a half-assed shitpost cosplay theme just to chill so yeah, wear what you want.

>> No.10321966

>>10321712
Honestly don't be intimidated, there'll be plenty of shitters like myself doing whatever tier cosplays.
Literally just have fun with it.

>> No.10322117

Okay, thanks you guys!! I feel a lot better about cosplaying at katsu now. I’ll try to not compare myself to anyone and just have fun; it’s good to know there are a lot of normal cosplayers there too!

>> No.10322232

>>10321758

Even a lot of the 'famous' cosplayers put on tabao and meme costumes for nighttime parties and socializing. There's cosplay at all levels, it's fine

Best badge strategy is to wait and see which line is longer. They leave up their online sales page during the con so if at-con is shorter, buy there, if prereg is shorter, fill out prereg in line on your phone.

No one will even notice.
No matter how bad you think you look, there always be at least one person at a con that makes you look good in comparison.

i keep seeing people with lineups where they change cosplays every 3-4 hours. is there even any fun in that? I can understand maybe one or two cosplays a day but 10-12 for the con? it just really rustles my jimmies

>> No.10333922

>>10333918
Usually when people do that they're not wearing every cosplay for the same reason or amount of time. I technically have 4 cosplays Saturday but it's in the form of something comfy I can wear in the morning while being a photographer, a "real cosplay" for the afternoon, a casual cosplay group with friends in the early evening that we'll only just be shooting in, and a late night party outfit. People who wear four "high effort" they all want shot in a day exist and aren't having much fun most likely, but that's a very small minority, and they're probably more there for business than fun anyway.

>> No.10334101

>>10333918
I do not get it. It takes me close to an hour to get into cosplay with makeup and wig adjustments. Switching in and out of 4 costumes would mean I’m not spending any fucking time at the actual convention.

can someone well traveled tell me how Katsucon compares and feels from cons like Anime Weekend Atlanta and Dragoncon?

>> No.10334823

>>10334810
None of these cons are like each other at all. Katsucon has a much bigger cosplay slant and people seem to take it seriously than your average anime convention. People are partying at night, but during the day most cosplayers are there to show off, shoot, and dress up.

>> No.10334864

The people wearing 4 costumes a day aren't really serious and just calling their goth ensemble "Misa from Death Note"-tier cosplayers. Then they live in a bubble where people assure them their cosplays amazing and perfect and anything else is elitism/gatekeeping.

>> No.10334888

>>10334810
None of them are comparable and Dragoncon is in its own league for the amount of shit that goes on there. Personally, Katsu would be the perfect "location" con if it were held in the spring.

>> No.10335032

>>10334810
I agree with what’s been said so far. Dragoncon is a completely different tier of convention and can’t be compared to anything else.

Katsu is cold (except for the last couple of years when it wasn’t) so if you don’t do well in cold weather, you’ll want to be stuck in the Gaylord to prevent freezing. Also the harbor winds will snatch your wig if you’re not careful.

Katsu has nando’s, though, so if your inner fat kid likes peri peri chicken wings as much as mine does, that makes it “better” than AWA.
