I'm pretty upset that newer HC release has no built-in petti. I guess the upcoming Fanasic Dolly doesn't have it too. Ugh.

Agreed. Best case, they add a tiny but of extra poof, worst case they make your skirt oddly shaped when combined with an actual petti, and no matter how much I try to reshape the tulle after washing it generally dries into a wrinkly mess.

They're supposed to help the skirt "float" over your main petti so you don't get any weird dips or lumps in the material. You see similar tulle in a lot of prom dresses with full skirts.

>> No.10320060

I just got my Honey Cake in and I'm super disappointed. A few gulls were saying that it was high quality poly and better than a lot of their newer dresses but it honestly still feels like ass. It's got this slight sheen and it's annoyingly slippery. Sure, it's light, and the print is crisp, but honest to God, my friend's Nameless Poem overall feels better than this dress does. Even the "cracked" buttons from before that people thought were a defect have been replaced by plain, clear yellow buttons, which somehow look cheaper.
I'm keeping it because I love the print but fuck if I'm ever buying a dress from AP again.

Well, I'm a recent poly convert after a recent spree on ETC/Leur Getter dresses -- it rolls up easier, travels easier, is lighter and flatter to store, no ironing/steaming, brighter, lighter to wear. Will admit I have not seen the new Honeycake fabric though.

I doubt they will though. SC is going downhill in popularity isn't it? The prices are already below their original retail the last time I checked.

Usually the English page is updated slower than the Japanese page, so for stock the Japanese side is more accurate to go off.

Also the sales page goes down as unavailable in between the flash sales. Things are only available to order between the given times. They started the flash sales approach after having huge issues with getting massively swamped by too many orders at once.

I ordered via the English page a skirt in the sale that was still showing as available on the English side but had sold out in that size in the Japanese. I had said when ordering the other size is fine if this one sells out, but they’ve held off invoicing me checking the stock for the first.

Same advice I'd give anyone else. If you don't already know how to do hair and makeup, learn that first. Lurk a lot, learn all you can about lolita before putting together coords yourself. Coming into the fashion with a solid grasp on it will also help you not look like a sissy, because everyone will be able to tell you're serious about it. If you fit into brand, start with secondhand brand (lacemarket, closetchild, wunderwelt) and pad out your wardrobe with taobao. If you're not fat you should be able to fit into brand, but if you're tall you might want to pick up a few underskirts too. If you have broad shoulders go for JSKs rather than OPs, and brand blouses might not fit so taobao is fine there. You'll be taken way more seriously if you wear brand and wear it well, and most people won't care you're a tranny if you're well-dressed.

I'm a cis guy and a 'daily' punk, but I wear lolita a few times a month at least. I've been wearing the fashion for about 15 years now.

My advice is forget the "community" aspect for now. Avoid CoF and groups like that. Don't join a local comm. Build your wardrobe and practice styling your coords. Keep working on your hair and makeup. Get used to being a solo lolita.

When you feel like your wardrobe is solid and you're ready for harsher CC then you can start posting your stuff on someplace like Instagram. Or if you've got a thick skin and can handle the thought of getting reposted to ita threads, then go to CoF.

People are a lot less likely to think you're a fetishist or a creep if you take the extra time to show you're serious about the fashion. It's like building an online lolita portfolio that people will see when they click on your profile/username.

The other thing that helps is avoid ageplay or crossdressing adjacent looks. Skip the sugary sweet AP prints and shiny satin. For god's sake don't ever wear something like Dreamy Baby Room. Don't wear chokers, cat ears, any of that shit.

Protip: Ankle socks and OTKs both look more lewd if you're tall and like shorter skirts. I stick to tights or knee-highs usually.

tl;dr Become a real, serious lolita. Then worry about what people think of you.

The print is vibrant but that's all it has going for it. No offense, but have you ever felt one of AP's older pieces? I feel like you'd understand the complaints if you had.
Like you said, the fabric is thin, which also means that when you put it on it has no "structure" around the bodice, causing it to crease in an unflattering way. Although this is probably less apparent if you actually stretch the shirring out a fair amount.
The thin fabric also means that petticoats look a bit weird under it. I tried different pettis and it takes a lot of smoothing for it to not look like a lumpy mess.
And this is just a nitpick, but God the sound it made when I was smoothing it. It sounded like a fucking windbreaker.

That's why any time someone talks about rereleases I doubt if I want it to be the same. Cotton does feel nice. I'm still salty for poly British Bear because I see it as autumnal print and it takes wearing a sweater underneath to make it weather appropriate. But at another hand brand items are not easy to replace, so I'm afraid I only gonna pull them out of closet to appreciate and hang back.

Poly is longer-lasting for the reason that it simply doesn't degrade as quickly as cotton does. This also has the unfortunate consequence of making it an ecological nightmare when discarded. My style is punk so many of my pieces are old school. I love how cotton looks and feels compared to poly, but I hesitate in wearing some of my most beloved old pieces, especially if they're particularly rare. I wear them for a few hours at a time and then pack them back in their garment bags lest they fade any more or get dirty. And I've never gotten over the trauma of getting caught in a sudden downpour and seeing the red from my skirt literally bleed all over my hands.

With my poly pieces I can toss them straight in the laundry, smash them in a closet, fold them up and stuff them in a suitcase, etc. without ever worrying about it.

One thing I've always wondered about the cotton vs poly debate is, does the fabric even touch your skin? If you're wearing bloomers and a blouse and a petticoat, why does it matter what the material of the fabric is? I guess it makes sense it your blouses are all pure cotton then the torso might get a little uncomfortable, but do the people who complain about poly dresses always use cotton blouses 100% of the time? This is the only way this makes sense to me

>> No.10322637

Also, this whole “lasting longer” thing is specifically referring to the vibrancy of prints. Poly dresses are less durable in cotton in every other way. I’m okay with my dress being a bit more faded if it’s not snagged or damaged in other irreparable ways

My suggestion is that some AP fans have used to some particular experience of interaction with clothes, not just how practical they are to wear. Like the feel of texture, the weight, the way it moves when you walk and how well it lays on petti. Remember, how people praised all the tiny detals like custom lace or matching buttons. I guess the same thing works for the material.

I can't speak for everyone but I do prefer to wear my cotton blouses than polyester ones. I'd say I wear them about 80% of the time. They just feel more breathable and almost sturdier? More structured and flattering?

What bothers me about AP's poly dresses is that the fabric feels flimsy and looks shiny because the main focus is to have a vibrant print, rather than feeling sturdy, breathable or nice to touch. The fit doesn't look as nice too, partly this is a pattern and sizing issue (most new AP dresses aren't particularly complex or tailored) but it feels like the fabric of the bodice just kind of hangs there looking frumpy and wrinkly because the fabric is too thin. The skirt portion doesn't always look smooth over a petticoat too.

Poly OPs are just hell to me. The last I bought was horror candy shop and it just felt like wearing a plastic bag, weirdly gross and suffocating on my skin. Wore it a few times and sold it immediately. Never again.

>> No.10322687

The fit and drape makes a lot of sense, actually. But I love OPs so I'm very glad that I don't have these kinds of skin sensitivities. I've never had the feeling of wearing a plastic bag unless I really concentrate and know the fabric ahead of time, so I guess I'm fortunate that the trend towards poly doesn't impact my comfort level. I feel like this would strictly apply to the printfags then? I have polyester solids from AP since 2013, 2014 and on a lot of them it feels like the polyester fabric practically makes the dress -- the texture of dots on one, the jacquard on another, heck Dolly Cross jsk basically looks the way it does because the material is a stiffer organdy with smooth satin underneath it and I remember some anons went batshit for that particular dress.

This conversation is bringing back ironic memories, I think Daydream Carnival released with a chiffon blouse and it was rather highly sought after. Feels like there was a trend to wear chiffon blouses under cotton jsks for a while back then.

I feel a bit attacked here. I don't harass people for modifying their brand, but I'm not a fan of it either. I guess I wouldn't buy altered dress unless it's really cheap and easy to restore.
Also on what about planting the seed of doubt about selling dresses, that's what I do in Dream Dress thread. Some dresses are near to unreachable unless you have someone to sell theirs.
I guess there should be another video about objectifying people in lolita aka people only follow lolita socials to stare at their possessions without caring about people's stories and stuff like that.

posting in the dream dress thread that you are generally interested in buying something is different than telling people that if they die, they want their family to sell them your dress. if you do that, you are obnoxious.

also lolita is clothes as much as it is a collectors hobby. just like some people will take their toys out of the box to display them, some people will modify their brand to fit them. it’s not your business unless it’s listed

She's right. It's just rude to keep approaching people demanding they sell their dresses. As for altering, I've bought altered pieces in the past. As long as it will fit me it doesn't bother me to buy it as long as the fabric and design aren't ruined. We spend so much time, effort and money into our looks so why should we walk around in ill fitting clothing. Just because it fits on your body doesn't mean it couldn't be tailored to fit better. Big girls don't look good in stretched out stuff and small girls don't look good with their dress hanging off of them.

Lots of items are partial or fully shirred especially from certain brands. Nearly every Meta release is "plus size friendly" for example. Are you going to refuse to sell to someone just bc her purchase history shows she bought a Shirring Princess JSK, bc a 300lb landwhale could technically squeeze into it?

And that's not even touching on the fact that lots of "plus size" listings on LM are 100% not in any country, and the seller just slapped that label on bc the garment was vaguely stretchy.

Yeah the quality drop has been in about the last 3 years- since maybe 2017 or so (though the print items I've handled from that year are still nice).

In 2017-2018 they had very few to almost no releases, then last year they started releasing more regularly again but with a drastic drop in quality.

That tracks. I still love my dresses from 2010-2013 or so, but I haven't even bothered paying attention to them for a good 5 years, since they started releasing nothing but poly lacemonsters.

As good as ever, though I feel they have fewer details (pintucks, lace) than before. Might just be the designer's choice. I don't see how WW would affect VM's quality since VM is just selling through them.

They did say they were having a lot more difficulty with obtaining some of their prior supplies, including lace, so that might contribute to it rather than WW rescuing it.

Quick question regarding the IW sale. It’s been a while since I’ve ordered directly from them myself, but my shopping service was closed for new year. I put in an order for a sale item on the very first day, and didn’t hear back until the 14th, once IW opened again after a long weekend. The item went out of stock in the size I had put in the order for, but added in a comment saying I’d be happy with the other size as an alternative, which is still in stock. When I got the email from them last Tuesday, they said to please wait for an invoice while we check other stock on the ordered item, as it was out of stock in the online store stock, this might take a few days. Now it’s been nearly a week, and I’ve still heard nothing. Is this sort of waiting length typical these days? At this point would it be best to drop IW another email to check, or to just give up and go through my shopping service? I did email IW as a reply to the email I got last week to confirm I’m happy to accept the other size of the item as an alternative in case of the one I’d put the order in for was sold out.
