Alright it's con season we got Ikkicon and Anime Dallas coming in hot. Texas Cosplay Discord: https://discord.gg/mUCEsGr
What are you going as?
Anything you're excited/not excited for?
Any other cons you'll be attending?
what happened last year that you gotta share?

We got more in the 2020 year such as:
Pax South
Anime North Texas
Fandom Legacy
Ushicon
Furry fiesta etc.

Cant wait for ikki just hope its not cold as ass

I almost got excited for this Fandom Legacy (they're using the old Hyatt that A-kon left?!) but the artist alley rules are turning me off. Calling themselves FANDOM and then not allowing any fanart at all? What??

Unless it's Disney it's too expensive to go after fan artists. Fan art is not going anywhere. Banning it from cons does nothing as people want that shit.

>> No.10295026

>>10295019

Artists can draw fanart for fun and all but if they're not the tiniest bit original enough to draw stuff people would lile like without using stolen intellectual property to give their sold work value then that is a little lame.

I find it especially annoying when people who have talent waste it taking from other talented people for profit. Draw fanart sure but don't break the law and disrespect the creator selling it to make money. Are you really a "fan" if you do that?

Especially in an industry like anime or manga for example where the pay is pitiful for many people and they do it because they love it even if it is tough work.

Because OC art doesn't sell at cons and artists have to get paid. I'm not going to cons expecting to buy OC I've never heard of. I'm going to a con to buy cheap fan art of stuff I like.

Do all artists in all artist alleys in every con in the world have all of their art online that I can purchase on readily available websites with correct tags to find it?

No. They don't.

I go to browse, discover and find new art. It's called shopping. Not everything is available on your phone with one click shopping. Only the Chinese people who rip off fan art to slap on products make that happen. They rip off the artists who risk putting their fan art online.

Sound logic right there.

>Lots of people buy the art or break the law selling it so it's fine!!!

That isn't how the legal system works.

>Your opinion is the minority

Is it though? A few other anons in this thread have lamented the fact that people make their whole careers out of fanart instead of using their talent elsewhere.

>> No.10295256

If cons don't want an artist alley in the future then sure, maybe. People generally don't want to buy OC art, they want to buy art of series they love. I for one only buy commissions from artists at artist alleys.

Meanwhile, comiket thrives still.

>>10295123
I shop in person and online, but sometimes you just want to see the merchandise in person, or commission someone.

>>10295026
Yes, you are a fan if you draw and sell fanart. Because other fans want more and more of that stuff, and I can tell you, I just want to pay someone to draw my favorite ships together. No, I can't find that through official sources, so your opinion on that means nothing to me. :)

Also I often prefer the fanartist's style to the official art.

AND I normally dislike most original content I see at cons. I'm not drawn to those stories, I'm there because I already saw a show I liked and wanted extra content for it.

>>10295059
I'll be there! Running the swap meet again. I don't expect much from this con but it's a fun excuse to dress up for the weekend and see friends. Looks like they got a better game room this year, too.

Yeah I agree the arcade was really great compared to last year! They said at closing ceremonies that the pre-reg over the past year helped them get the bigger arcade, and they'd like to keep prices low (pre-reg is now currently 20 for next year once they get it up), but pre-orders will help them afford a bigger gameroom for the next year.

They need to work on security, though. SegaMew lost $700 worth of merch in the dealers room because they did not enforce it well enough. My friends said they saw some bootleg merch, too. I don't personally care much about that, but I think that the con doesn't put as much effort into overhead management as they need to, because they never answer questions or get back to you still.

They had two food trucks and the hotel provided on-site food options for a decent price this year. Also the rave was run by Greg Ayres but I didn't bother to go because I'm old and I passed out, lol. Oh, also dealers room had two vendors selling snacks, which I don't think they had last year.

Cosplay contest was decent, I'm surprised at how small it was, but heard that it was capped at 20 entries. Anyone know if it was true?

Hey Texas gulls, anyone else notice ANT and My Hero Con are literately on the same weekend and are 25 minutes away from each other in two months?

Which do you think will suffer more because of it?

>> No.10300299

>>10300014
Yeah, I've been pointing that out to my friends. I feel sorry for any artists tabling at either. I think ANT will suffer more. They already moved dates, locations, and now will lose even more attendees to the MH con, because those people were gonna fall all over themselves to go to such a dedicated event anyway. It's super popular.

I like BNHA but not enough to drop money and go. I am still salty about ANT taking all year to admit that they 'free' badge was a glitch, then acting like 'oh but you can get a discount on our new date and location if this happened to you!'. Uh, no. No, because your communication and customer service has already shown me it sucks after I asked again and again with no answers.

Lines aren't really a thing aside from tonight's early badge pick up. Speaking of, you should do that if you can. You're more likely than not going to have to park in the retail garage. The hotel spots get filled immediately and don't open up. Don't think about parking at any other business because you'll get towed within an hour. Just stick to the garage or make a few sweeps around the hotel lot if you just really feel that lucky. Last year I parked at the bookstore and didn't get towed but I think it was because I had a student sticker on my car at the time and they probably assumed I worked there.

PAX is not a cosplay event unless you are a paid professional, sponor of a game, or shit like that. There is seriously no reason to go to PAX if you are trying to go in with cosplay because you are appeasing people who guess you are from DBZ, Sailor Moon, or maybe some adult swim show. You'd get better recognition at a nerd bar in cosplay on a friday night than you would pax for most of it.

PAX is mostly about esports, promoting indie games from minority/LGBTQ(seriously I know this sounds pol but it's so damn true) upcoming, and now shoehorned "social media feel good crap". You're wasting your time and money going to PAX unless you are one of those people who claps at hearing star wars and mario clones. Yeah there is some okay stuff, but for the cost, time investment, and bullshit you have to go through to deal with it not worth it by any stretch.

How bad was it? I really wanted to go even though I've had a history of planning to skip it until the last minute when they pull some guest out of their ass at the last minute that makes it worth it for me. Last year they had a bunch of Ace Combat stuff going on, so I had the time of my life since that's been my niche game love forever and got to compete (and win for once), but this year on the schedule there was...nothing. Did Capcom even show up? They and Namco have been the only really big names I've recognized showing up consistently.

I heard this was the last year for South too, but I don't know if that's true or not. Wouldn't be surprised if it was; not once has it even come close to being as good as the one year I went to East.

So basically, where our AA titles from Namco and Capcom usually are was the Mixer booth that no one really gave a fuck about, the arena which was pretty much just playing fortnite for most of the weekend and the Houston Outlaws (OMEGALUL AT OVERWATCH IN 2020)

There was also Secret Neighbor (the Hidden: Source clone with a reskin and shitty gimmick). A few super extra expensive indie stores for D&D. I found lots of mediocre 200 buck dice sets and that pissed me off bc I'd rather just buy from a smaller handmade dice stores like Yaniir or Dicey Dungeons. 7 clothing stores which resold things off of Aliexpress and scalped amibos or other statue collectibles. Lots of Anime merch (why?).

Other already released indie games, such as Night in the Woods, Brawlhalla or Pillars of Eternity, were there to demo, but everyone who is going to buy those games already has. PoE had a cool board game but only had one to play so you were unlikely to get to play it.

Reaper wasn't there due to revamping con inventory during their kickstarter, so not pax's fault on that, just inconvenient circumstance. Wyrmwood and Level-Up dice continue to overcharge for things you can find elsewhere in the convention.

They expanded the tabletop section and moved the PC section and Autograph sections to be in the expo hall, which took up more space for other things that could be there. MTG had about 12 tables for their events this year. I'm glad I played EDH on Sunday because I would have smelled that stank and got my ass handed to me by those 4 turn end decks, or more Shadowborn Apostle BS. I didn't interact with the other card games so idk what to tell you.

And last thing I did was the True Dungeon Demo. I didn't know it had shuffleboard combat and that sucks zzz

Major games, were out right impossible to get to or not worth the time playing
Indie games, are the main pull these days, but 90% of it is meh platformers or "let me tell you about my racial background/LGBTQ/I am X minority, so I made this game!" The games are usually fine but the amount of other shit slapped in your face gets annoying to an extent I just can't deal with even if it's 100% legit.

If you really want to see your favorite e-celeb from twitch going could be nice, if you have a wad of cash burning in your pocket this will solve it, if you want a "safe" con to go to with someone like your significant other who isn't into nerd shit at all this is what it's for these days.

Hot take but I actually like smaller cons to cosplay at vs large ones with lots of pros. Meeting people who do similar cosplay is way easier, and talking to them like humans is way better as generally less time crunch. People tend to not have their head so far up their assholes that you can chill a fair bit, panels often have non stock/normie Q&A sessions, the +18 panels at night are often way better.

Dance shit and vendor halls can be lacking, but i do find more reasonable prices at small cons for merch or vendors unaware what they are selling off or doing discount to make inventory for larger cons.

If you paid 60 dollars to go do this, may be worth it still, but if you did the pre-reg for it then 35 for a weekend con isn't bad. I wouldn't pay for the con hotel, but worth a day trip or shitty local motel.

I’m not going to begin with. I had enough of them fucking up every year. Especially to what a Staff did to another Staff by threatening her life after the chick saw that staff member actually drugging the Swallowtail guests and still gave them alcohol in top of that so she can sleep with them. AM staff clearly thinks they are saints and their treatment to the volunteers is not worth it. They will go down if the higher ups keeps treating their peers and their guests like that.

You're ten years behind the curve. Dozens of testimonials couldn't get John arrested or AM shut down. It will take literal video proof before anything will be done. People will defend them to the grave.

Anon, why did you reply to my post?

You know, I went through the wrong door at last year's AM, and this dude ran up to me and this dude, who I'm guessing was a supervisor, started telling me where to get a volunteer shirt and where I should go for my post and where the free food was. I was just looking for the bathroom, and I could have been a little shit and snuck onto the team without them even knowing. Their organization is awful

Probably because anon is talking of the many “success” of AM and how they did it.

I was sitting right behind the photog when they took that lol

I hope Anime Frontier is good since the scene is basically dead until then. Now to ignite some flames:

Afest > San Japan > Ikki > Anime Dallas > Ushi > A-Kon > Matsuri > ANT > Oni >

Afest and San Japan. You go to A-Kon and Ikkicon to party but the cons themselves are shit.

Oh okay just checking, at least we both agree they're the best in Texas (soon to be USA).

You are a massive retarded fucknugget. AM is considered one of the worst in the country. If all of their controversies were put to the side their massive incompetence are off the charts. They couldn't even organize a birthday party let alone run a con.

Anon, they aren’t the best. They are the craziest cult convention in the US. Even DM and Deneice has blackmail staff for giving out the controversies they have done.

Plus you okay for the guests to get drugged and raped by this cult? Especially by Deneice and John?

This
There was someone in one of these threads that straight up admitted to being behind most of the "Anime Matsuri is the best!" posts because they know that no matter what they'll always get a reply, and even then people kept replying to their obvious bait.
If anyone in this thread replies to this post @10330439 or any of it's string of replies, I'm sorry but you are stupid.

Didn't happen, or else there would be evidence or it would show up on the news, let's focus on the real problems please.
John is a bro and Deneice is hot, and basically you're fucking stupid!

I'll bite. I'm not terribly fond of their organizational skills, but I would have rather gone to Anime Dallas than Ikkicon (in its past incarnations) while it was at that awful hotel.

But Ikki is back on my future list again now that they're moving.

Anime Frontier announced its first Japanese guest. Does anyone think that they would pull better guests in the coming weeks?

You have such a massive hardon for AF thinking it'll bring out godly guests. Sorry they're not suddenly bringing all of those great guests from ANYC to your backyard.

>> No.10334808

>>10334637
Yeah, probably. I doubt they would bring anyone huge like JAM Project but I can see one or two more guests similar to ZAQ. They are filling up a 13k seat venue for Diva Night.

I actually really like zaq, so I'm kinda jelly I haven't seen them at other cons. Still holding out on some not so big groups like Eve or SymaG coming to Texas in the near future, too. My biggest want is fear and loathing in Las vegas, but they might be too high profile

People are sharing it on facebook an email that they sent out saying that they are moving their times. I'm not even sure if that email is real or not unless they announce it.
